Unlike the tropical island scenery many visitors associate with Thailand, Chiang Mai is ringed by misty mountains and jungle – it is also in close proximity to the apexes of China, Myanmar and Laos, otherwise referred to as the "Golden Triangle".Founded 700 years ago as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom (Lanna means "a million rice fields") Chiang Mai is home to more than 300 temples and a multitude of national parks, mountain trails, waterfalls and ancient ruins. In recent years the town has become increasingly metropolitan, though not quite to the extent of other Thai cities, including the nation's bustling capital, Bangkok. In Chiang Mai, visitors will see

The long neck women are known as Padaung, a sub-group of the Karen tribe. Long Neck WomanThe Karen tribe villages are near the Thai-Myanmar border, but there are also "villages" near Chiang Mai. I say "villages" as they are really just market stalls set up for the benefit of tours from Chiang Mai.Long Neck Market VillageOpinion is divided on these tours. These sort of day tours make for good value when you consider how much time you would save if you went to each activity individually. Most elephant rides go for half an hour to one hour. There is no need to go for over an hour, unless you really love elephants.Elephant MountElephant TrekkingAt the elephant park people were selling bundles of bananas and sugar cane to feed the elephants. Located on a plain at an elevation of 316 m, surrounded by mountains and lush countryside, it is much greener and quieter than the capital, and has a cosmopolitan air and a significant expat population, factors which have led many from Bangkok to settle permanently in this "Rose of the North".Founded in 1296 AD, the culturally rich city of Chiang Mai is the longest continuously inhabited settlement from the ancient days of Siam. Located amidst the rolling foot hills of the Himalayan Mountains 700 km north of Bangkok, it could only be reached by an arduous river journey or an elephant back trip until the 1920s, isolation which has helped keep Chia

CHIANG RAI (GOLDEN TRIANGLE) - Thailand
In a region where even the tuk-tuk drivers may address you as "Monsieur", it's tempting to link the French Connection to the mythical poppies in the hidden valleys and the supposed narcotics warlords in the dining rooms of the five-star hotels mushrooming across the notorious Golden Triangle. It seems more likely, however, that north Thailand's multilingual roots lie in the former French colonial presence across the Mekong River in Laos, rather than in the illicit trade routes fanning out across the globe to the world's great metropolises.Chiang Rai's dusty modernity belies its ancient history as an important trading center. It was founded as a walled city by King Mengrai in 1262, over thirty years before his 'New City' of Chiang Mai. Now linked to the outside world by air via Chiang Mai and bangkok, the little town sprawls along the neighbor, although Wat Kok River. Wat Phra Singh is easy to visit as it is right in the center of Chiang Mai city, located on the corner of Singharat and Ratchadamnoen Rd road. Wat Phra Singh was built inside the old city walls at a time when Chiang Mai was the capital of the northern Thai Lanna or Lan Na kingdom. The wat was originally built in 1345. It may have simply been a stupa erected by a king (and descendant of the great Mangrai) to honour his father. The stupa still stands, but most of the buildings you see on the site today are of much more recent vintage. There are three main buildings, namely the Stupa, Viharn Lai Kam, and Haw Trai.Wat Chiang Man - built by the city's founder, King Mengrai. Ban Chiang Bronze Age Discovery in Udon Thani
In the northeastern part of Thailand, at the confluence of three small tributary streams in Udon Thani province, lies the Bronze Age village and cemetery site of Ban Chiang. As may things in life, the revelation of Ban Chiang started as a accident. In 1966 Steven Young was wandering around a small village in Northeastern Thailand when he tripped on a tree root and fell. On the ground he saw rings, which turned out to be pottery shards. Further investigation revealed more fragments which had been revealed by gradual erosion. Legend has it that Ban Chiang was discovered by a clumsy American college student, who fell in the road of the present town of Ban Chiang, and found ceramics eroding out of the road bed. The first excavations at the site were conducted in 1967 by archaeologist Vidya Intakosai, and this and subsequent excavations by the Fine Arts Department in Bangkok and the University of Pennsylvania under the direction of Dr. Chester F. Chiang Mai Attractions
There is much to see and do in Chiang Mai, and one of the simplest and cheapest tourist activities is to wander the windy, narrow lanes of the old town and seek out the pretty moat with its ancient bastions. The city dates back 700 years and many historic structures have been well preserved. Perhaps the most distinctive is the 42m high ruined Chedi Luang which stands in the town centre. The Tribal Museum, which offers a glimpse into the culture of the major hill tribes of Thailand. Here, you’ll find a massive collection of handicrafts, costumes, jewellery, ornaments, utensils, tools, musical instruments and ceremonial paraphernalia. Wiang Kum Kam was the earliest historical settlement in the Chiang Mai area and the excavated ruins are worth seeing. Established around the 11th century, the city was flooded and abandoned in the early 18th century. A four-sided chedi and the layered brick pediments of Wat Kan Thom remain. The Lanna Palace Hotel in Chiang Mai
Where to stay in Chiang Mai? The Hobos had the pleasure of visiting Chiang Mai a few weeks ago. We stayed at the Lanna Palace Hotel. I must be honest with all of you; this place was not really worth the cost. Sorry, but this place ended up being about $37 a night and it was not really worth it. Maybe for business travelers this would be a better choice but for backpackers it was not really a value. The room was big but who cares if the bed is super uncomfortable and dirty? There was breakfast included but it was a buffet of stomachaches. Both of us felt super ill after every breakfast. The staff was not very friendly, which is odd for Thailand because everywhere else the people are wonderful, even in budget guesthouses. The “pool” or I like to refer to it as an in-ground ice bucket. This thing was as small as a hot tub and freezing because it is always completely shaded by the building. Chiang Mai Tour Dilemma
Here is my latest dilemma, why did the chained up monkeys bother me so much when the elephants that were in irons did not? On our third day in Chiang Mai we accompanied the family we are traveling with in Northern Thailand to a series of local attractions. The first place we visited was an elephant sanctuary, which both Alie and I were extremely excited to visit as both of us had fallen in love with the elephants of the Serengeti. This place was slightly different than a wildlife sanctuary because the animals are taught to work and perform tricks. Some of the tricks that we witnessed were playing soccer and painting pictures, which are then sold at very high prices. As we sat watching the elephants play soccer and stack huge tree logs I did not feel sorry for the elephants at all. It did not occur to either of the hobos that what we were watching was cruel and we enjoyed the show immensely. Wiang Kum Kam ::UNSEEN CHIANG MAI
In 1984, just outside the modern Chiang Mai metropolitan area, archaeologists uncovered the remains of an ancient city. Research concluded that this was the city of Wiang Kum Kam, one of many fortified cities built by King Mengrai as he consolidated his hold on the north. In fact, it appears that Mengrai may have lived at Wiang Kum Kam for a few years before Chiang Mai was constructed.     Nearly 20 temple sites have been uncovered in the area, which lies between the Ping river and the Lamphun highway. The buildings were buried underground by years of flooding, which apparently is the reason Mengrai eventually moved his capital to Chiang Mai. In fact, the Ping river originally flowed along the north side of the town, but at some point during the Burmese occupation from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries, the river changed course and now flows along the west side of the site. The change of course was apparently the final straw which caused the city to

You can take a dive in the hotwater swimming pool, but attention, the water is somewhat more then 40 C., so go slowly inside to pool. Once in the hot water; just relax under the hot waterfall. Entrance fee is not expensive, every Thai family will buy at the entrance some eggs and borrow a basket to boil some eggs for lunch. When you are travelling with 5-6 persons, you can rent also a privat big bathroom and have a closed hot water bath and relax. (200 bath/hr.) By Tedsocoa

Village of BO SANG One of the interesting things to do around Chiang Mai, is to visit the famous village of BO SANG 9 km east from C.M. It is the center of Thailand of umbrella and parasol making. Arriving in the village of Bo Sang, you can visit a production center of parasols, handmade from bamboo and saa paper, inpregnated paper. The are all handpainted in colorful images of flowers and birds. When going around a bit outside the village, you can see many small houses, where all the family is preparing these parasols in the gardens to be sold in one of the many shops on the mainroad.

Maesa Camp Elephant Show There are two elephant shows in Chiang Mai and we did both: 1. Chiang Dao elephant show, then bamboo rafting, then lunch, then elephant ride, then ox-car ride. All this in the same camp, then we went to an orchird farm and we were returned by 5 pm more or less. 2. Maesa Camp elephant show. It’s a half day tour and they also take you to an orchid farm. The first tour is much better because you have many activities in only one place, the show is very entertaining and cute, the paintings were beautiful. The bamboo rafting is very pleasant, calm and relaxing. The lunch was fine and the farm wonderful. Ah!!! and the ride was very exciting took almost 1 hour. But the elephant show in Maesa is better, the camp is closer to the city, more organized and clean and have more elephants. The elephants are much better take care and have better painting skills, the painting were much beautiful and of course more expensive. In Chiang Dao cost between 600 and 900 bath and

Visit an Ethnic Hilltribe Village While in Chiang Mai or elsewhere in Northern Thailand, I highly recommend making a daytrip excursion to a traditional village of one of the local hilltribe ethnic groups. Over 100 years ago, the Hilltribe peoples migrated south from China into what are now Myanmar (Burma), Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand. The six major tribes are the Karen (Kariang, Yang), the Hmong (Meo), the Yao (Mien), the Akha (Ekaw), the Lisu (Lisaw), and the Lahu (Mussur). The main profession of all these tribes is farming, and all of them tend to migrate whenever they feel that the soil at their present location is becoming depleted. Each tribe is distinct, with its own culture, religion, language, art, and dress. With Thailand undergoing rapid modern development, it is difficult yet to say whether these tribes will continue in their traditional ways of life, or whether they will eventually be assimilated into mainstream Thai society. When visiting a hilltribe village, remember show

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep: Temple in the Mountains Rising 1676 meters above the city the Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, is one of the most important religious destination in Chiang Mai. Originally built in the year 1386 by King Keuna the Great, the story behind its construction of tells of a white elephant (which only a king can own) ascending the mountains with one-half of a sacred buddha relic. This temple was built where the white elephant made its final resting place and was named after hermit Suthep Reusi, who had lived there 1,300 years ago. It is widely said that if you did not visit Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, then you had not visited Chiang Mai. According to my guide, if you had not been blessed by the holy monk in the temple, then you had not been to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Visiting the temple is easy, as there are various public transport options available to take you to the base of the temple. A songthew (red taxi) will be able to take you up 1 way to the temple from

Dr. Thirteen by Brian Azzarello and Cliff Chiang
I'd heard about "Architecture and Mortality" because some online reviewer was surprised at how Azzarello portrayed the "architects" of the DC Universe (Geoff Johns, Grant Morrison, Greg Rucka and Mark Waid). He portrays them as... for lack of a better word... douchebags. For someone who hates writing superhero books (didn't Azzarello once say that, around the time he wrote that terrible Superman run?), he's crafted a very nice story about how self-important... douchebags (for lack of a better word) shit all over things people care about. Nostalgic fan-boy love is entirely misguided. I try not to participate in it at a local level (though Dan Jolley can attest I used to, but the whole Firestorm relaunch led me to shed it after I saw my peers' mentality). But if the four 52 writers, at least a couple of them, wouldn't have jobs if it weren't for fan-boy mentality (and I'm not talking about Waid). So it's shitting on the people who make you popular, who are responsible for your pa
