We've talked about other gateways to Crewe before, like West Street, Hungerford Road, Macon Way etc. Here's another one, the old Chester Bridge that feeds cars, buses and pedestrians directly into Market Square. To the right of the snap most of the shops and offices are now taken but the land either side of the bridge has been derelict for a while. Noticed the other day that a fresh agent's sign has gone up suggesting that there's a push to offload the plot again. I'm told that it was part of the leisure complex land but, for various reasons, has never been developed. One reason was financial elements that restricted the sell-on and subsequents profits, but that's another story. I’m excited to be a part of the PA intercollegiate band festival this year as I have been for the past decade.  This year the festival is being held at the newly finished Swope Auditorium at West Chester University.  This is the 61st Annual Pennsylvania Intercollegiate Band festival and is the longest running state band festival of its kind.   This year Dr. Peter Loel Boonshaft from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York is the conductor of the festival band.  The concert is being hosted by Dr. John Villella and Dr. Andrew Yozviak of West Chester University. Van Nortwick-- like so many artists from the Golden Age of Illustration-- seems almost as intangible as the fairy book characters he painted.His work imitated the popular style of Maxfield Parrish in the same way calendar artists like R. Only a couple had a pop at the Photo quiz the other day, but both were correct. It's the Old Bank Chambers building on the corner of Chester Street and Market Street, opposite Cash Converters. The lower level is now a bookmaker's while the top two floors (pictured) have been the offices of Taylor Hollinshead solicitors for a few years.

Ok, so none of the cottages are on Chester Street. I'm talking the three quaint side streets that once upon at time backed onto the General Offices of Crewe Works (that were burnt down in 1983). Tollitt, Dorfold and Betley Streets are, I believe all grade II listed, but the general look and feel of these one-time railway workers' homes is very different. From the well maintained, planted and regularly painted, some are a tad tumbledown. Why is this? Take the wall at the entrance to Betley Street; why has it almost disappeared? Same for the wall that borders properties on Tollitt Street, separating them from the walkway down to the Phoenix Leisure Park. Does being listed prevent general maintenance, is the council at fault, or have too many of these once gorgeous properties fallen into the hands of buy-to-letters who just want their dollar at the end of each month? I must have done something horribly wrong in a former life. Friday, my day of leisure, and yet I asked Mrs Crewe blog if she fancied a day together around Chester. A chance to get away from the usual stuff, see a few different sights, enjoy some lunch and a few drinks together. Numa vasilha pequena coloque a geléia de damasco e o molho inglês e misture bem. Pincele o chester, cubra com papel alumínio e acrescente um pouco de água à assadeira. Leve ao forno moderado preaquecido por 1 hora. Retire o papel alumínio e asse por mais 1 hora aproximadamente, até que esteja bem macio e dourado, regando sempre com o líquido que se forma na assadeira.

Today was all about the kids. Half-term can be a stressful time for some but I really enjoy taking my two monsters out and about. There's plenty to see and do around Crewe, but it's good to get out of the town occasionally. In fact, that Crewe remains one of the key interchanges at the heart of the rail network is a massive bonus for those that live in or around Crewe.
