      Frozen Cherries are Amazing!
So, I'm sure you already knew that fruit was good for your diet! That is like dieting 101. But, did you know that freezing certain fruits makes them ten times better?I decided to feature cherries here, since I actually like frozen cherries better than fresh ones. Why? They come un-pitted! I find pits really take away from my eating experience. Just to be clear, though, I also love frozen mango (1

      Unpopping the Muslim Girls' Cherries
Over in France the government will foot the bill if a woman desires to get her cherry unpopped. Muslim women are flocking to Paris, to obtain hymenoplasties,a surgical procedure which at least creates the illusion of virginity. The whole Virgin-Slut thing is a very slippery slope. I know, having grown up under the strict tutelage of nuns. At my all girls high school there were frequent philosoph

Rainier Cherries and Chevre Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette
This is a sweet and tangy summer salad topped with a naturally fat free dressing that will have you licking the bowl. The dressing gets its thickness from the pectin in natural raspberry preserves and omits oil from the dressing all together. The fats you need to maximize nutrition from all those fruits and greens comes in the form of creamy and smooth soft chevre cheese. The sweetness of Rainier

Which Cherries Are the Best Remedies for Gout?
When it comes to remedies for gout, the first thing that comes to mind may not be cherries, but they are in fact one of the most popular “home remedies” for helping to treat and prevent gout. In fact, cherries have been considered an effective gout treatment for more than fifty years. It [...]

Can Tart Cherries Protect You From Heart Disease and Diabetes?
Rats that received whole tart cherry powder as part of an otherwise high-fat diet didn't gain as much weight or build up as much body fat as they normally would. In addition, their blood showed much lower levels of inflammation-related molecules that have been linked to heart disease and diabetes. They also had significantly lower blood levels of cholesterol and triglycerides than rats who did not receive the cherry powder. Obese rats that received cherry powder were less likely to build up fat in their bellies, which is another factor linked to cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes. It's still too early to know whether tart cherries will have the same effect in humans, but researchers are preparing to launch a pilot-phase clinical trial later this spring.

Your Daughter Doesn’t Want Cherries, Ma’am. You Do.
Children can be a whiny, needy bunch. But is it just me or are parents using that to their advantage? Every day, I notice that more and more parents are exploiting the fact that we servers will hop to it when a little kid wants a refill or an extra side. I absolutely love it when [...]

      Popping Our Cherries
Back in the dark ages when I was sixteen, shopkeepers blithely sold school kids cigarettes for ten p a pop. I had spent five years in a rather posh girls' school that smelt like old cabbage and like old cabbage was riddled with spinster teachers who were as hideous as grotesque caterpillars. At that school you could be expelled for dying your hair blue or smoking in the bogs. Consequently I made my escape sharpish to the local comprehensive where you could buy a selection of illegal substances at the school gates and where the teachers turned a blind eye if you smoked weed in the sixth form common room (I kid you not). We often smoked joints on Hampstead Heath (which was where the school was located), and soon after I started at the comprehensive, I realized I had entered an extremely soph

Taken with Olympus E500 digital camera on August 27th, 2007. Click picture for larger view. I planted a cherry tree this spring and now my first ever berries are ripe. I’m kind of amazed that they would become edible so far north and let me tell you that they taste great Not many berries to harvest this year because the tree is still so young. "Busting Cherries"
The post title is an inside joke. Today I had the pleasure of meeting John Bollwitt from the Crazy Canucks and Audihertz, his wife Rebecca Bollwitt from Miss 604, JJ from The Canucks Hockey Blog and his wife Tracy tonight in downtown Vancouver. It was great to actually meet these people in person, as I have been reading their blogs for about a year now. This was the first time I have met people in person after only knowing them online. Even though they were tired from parties or blogathons (Rebecca), their company was terrific. JJ contemplating an Orca eating a Leaf as a new Canucks logo got a great laugh. What a wiseguy.I was curious as to how a northern hick was going to get along with some city slickers...but no problemo. These Crazy Canucks are great people.Hopefully we'll (my wife and myself) will be chilling with Alanah tomorrow on the Island. That is, if there aren't anymore bomb threats on one of our BC Ferries.I also blew about 200 bucks at the Rock Shop on Granville Street i

      Cheers for Cherries!
This is a "scrum-diddly-umptious" recipe for carb types. You can have this as your main meal after having a nice glass of fresh vegetable juice, as it supplies protein and fat needs for one carb- type meal. Keep in mind that you can use any type of fruit that you like that's appropriate for your nutritional type. The cherries are slightly defrosted, nice and cold, making the smoothie creamy and refreshing. The color is gorgeous, the taste sublime. Best of all, it's easy ... once you know the secret: Kitchen supplies: Immersion blender Large glass measuring cup Tall glass for serving Ingredients: 4 ounces of raw milk 1 teaspoon raw, organic honey ½ cup dark, sweet, slightly-defrosted cherries (unsweetened) Preparation: Combine milk, cherries and honey in glass measuring cup. Whiz up with immersion blender, starting on low setting. Use apron if desired to protect clothing from cherry stains. Pour into glass and serve. So fantastic, it makes me wish I was a carb type!

      Mmmm… Cherries.
Though the flowers are gone, the Nanking cherries are on their way to becoming plump, round, tart (yet lovely) cherries that will be picked by the fraccy fingers and cooked up into some kick-ass cherry jam. I thought it necessary to brag share the beautiful blooms with you while I wait. At least these blooms, I can identify. As soon as I can drag my sorry bottom* over to the greenhouse nearby, I’ll have an answer about that other dang bush. * Sorry bottom refers to the fact that I haven’t dragged it there yet, not the actual state of the fraccy bottom. It might be a 43 year old bottom, but it’s not all that sorry. You’ll just have to take my word for it. Nanking Cherry Jam Recipe 1500 ml (6 cups) Nanking Cherries 250 ml (1 cup) water 1 package powdered pectin 1200 ml (4.5 cups) sugar Stem and wash Nanking Cherries and place in a saucepan with water. Bring water to a boil and simmer 15-20 minutes until fruit is soft. Mash fruit to press out juice and strain. Ret

      Cherries May Help Fight Jetlag
travel Next time you go to Europe make sure and include cherries in your carry on bag to snack on.  Nutritionists such as Dr. Russel Reiter, a nutrition researcher and one of the world’s authorities on melatonin, claim that cherries might help fight jet lag. “Tart cherries contain melatonin, which is then absorbed into the blood stream influencing your biological clock,” he said.He suggests eating them 30 minutes before trying  sleep when flying.  Once at your destination continue your cherry picking and eat them 30 minutes before going to bed.  To get the most effect the cherries must be dried becasue they contain more melatonin than fresh cherries. However, this claim has not yet been tested on humans.  Regardless, dried cherries are high in antioxidants which still makes them a healthy snack and not a bad tasting one either.  Choosecherries.com

And there is a glare from the light which shows at the top of the painting.)DetailYes, it took more than one day to paint this. In fact the cherries were really quite rotten by the time I was finished with it. So sad I couldn't eat them. There is a quote somewhere about painting pears...something about how patient they are, they just sit there and let you paint them without being ruined from the time involved. It's true. Not so with other fruits and flowers. Now you know the secret reason you see so many paintings of pears...and not so many cherries! :)
