Prypiat (Ukrainian: При́п'ять, Pryp”jat’; Russian: При́пять, Pripjat’; or Pripyat) is an abandoned city in the Zone of alienation in northern Ukraine, Kiev Oblast, near the border with Belarus. It was home to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant workers. The city was abandoned in 1986 following the Chernobyl disaster. Its population had been around 50,000 prior to the accident.T

MINSK, Belarus — Kasya Markouskaya has just been told that when she graduates this spring with a journalism degree she'll be sent to work for two years in a town that was badly contaminated when the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded in 1986. Several thousand Belarusian university graduates are being sent against their will to areas hit by radiation 22 years ago. Some, including Markouskaya, are protesting the work assignments Saturday as part of an opposition march held annually on the anniversary of the explosion. They are taking a risk in challenging President Alexander Lukashenko, dubbed Europe's last dictator for his refusal to tolerate any dissent in the former Soviet republic. His government has declared these regions no longer hazardous. Radiation levels have decl
(Watch this great Greenpeace video on Chernobyl)Twenty-two years ago today, on 28 April 1986, the Soviet Union acknowledged there had been an accident at the Chernobyl V.I. Lenin Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, two days after reactor number four exploded and released thirty to forty times the radioactivity of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. We all know the consequences of what followed. Chernobyl should never be wiped from human memory!
Ukraine paid homage Saturday to victims of the Chernobyl nuclear catastrophe, a "planetary" drama as Kiev called it, 22 years after the world's worst nuclear incident.Overnight, some hundred Ukrainians including President Viktor Yushchenko and other top state officials laid wreaths at the monument to the victims of Chernobyl in Kiev and lighted candles during a religious service held for the tragedy, the presidential press service said.In Slavutich, a small town 50 kilometers (30 miles) away from the wrecked nuclear power station, where most of its personnel live, an overnight vigil was due to be held."The Chernobyl catastrophe became planetary and even now continues to take its toll on people's health and the environment," the health ministry said in a statement. On April 26, 1986, reactor
The Russian consumer products agency, Rospotrebnadzor, has authorized the sale of food produced in regions affected by the Chernobyl disaster, the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper reported on Friday.Agricultural produce from the zones affected by fallout from the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster had been previously considered unfit for consumption, owing to above-average radiation levels. But a spokesperson from the agency assures consumers that “in twelve of the fourteen regions of the Russian Federation exposed to radiation from the explosion, all production now corresponds to normal hygienic standards”.The Bryansk and Kaluga regions remain areas of radioactive hazard. However, the agency’s spokesperson said “In all of the fourteen affected regions, food for schools and kindergart

What Created This Monster? by NYT - snip:LIKE Noah building his ark as thunderheads gathered, Bill Gross has spent the last two years anticipating the flood that swamped Bear Stearns about 10 days ago. As manager of the world’s biggest bond fund and custodian of nearly a trillion dollars in assets, Mr. Gross amassed a cash hoard of $50 billion in case trading partners suddenly demanded payment from his firm, Pimco. And every day for the last three weeks he has convened meetings in a war room in Pimco’s headquarters in Newport Beach, Calif., “to make sure the ark doesn’t have any leaks,” Mr. Gross said. “We come in every day at 3:30 a.m. and leave at 6 p.m. I’m not used to setting my alarm for 2:45 a.m., but these are extraordinary times.” Even though Mr. Gross, 63, is a ma

I’ve been wanting to write about the toxic and polluted Rhone River that scientists are calling, “The French Chernobyl” but I’ve been way too busy. LUCKILY, The Guardian wrote about it:

Twenty years ago, the worst accident in the history of the nuclear industry occurred at the Chernobyl power plant in Ukraine. The full health impact of that accident is still difficult to assess directly1.In June 2005, Dr Peter Boyle, Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), established an international Working Group to study the cancer consequences following the Chernobyl accident: its task was to evaluate the human cancer burden from radioactive fallout from the accident in Europe as a whole. The Working Group publishes its conclusions this week in the International Journal of Cancer in an article entitled: "Estimates of the Cancer Burden in Europe from Radioactive Fallout from the Chernobyl Accident."Dr Boyle said that: "Because the cancer burden from Chernoby
levels of radiation in relatively safe areas is many times what the background level is in most localities. Due to natural and human processes, activity gets concentrated in some locations. There are areas of extreme activity (hot spots) within the zone. Certain elements like radioactive strontium get concentrated in bone so for example animal remains can show very high activity within the zone. The liquidators who helped clean up the zone buried highly radiocactive waste in different locations - some of them not well-recorded.The nuclear power plant that went critical in April 1986 is just to the north-west of the big lake near the centre of the picture.
What an absurd thing to suggest that the Chernobyl disaster was not a big deal as some people like to suggest. The city of Pripyat built for the workers and families of Chernobyl and connected industries was abandoned in 1986. It had a population of 45 000 at the time. As I have stated, estimates of eventual deaths due to this disaster are around 10 000. A view of the sarcophagus from Pripyat If a disaster takes place and someone says "You know what - 100 000 people will die" and then it turns out that only 10 000 die, is that a cause for celebration? But that is the kind of thing we hear about Chernobyl.
The following was a reply to a comment on a post I deleted.Radiation is never "Good for you". After Chernobyl, there was a dramatic rise in the number of reported thyroid cancers in children. The reason is that much radioactive iodine was released to the environment and children were particularly susceptible to absorbing this. "The incidence of thyroid cancers in children and adolescents up to 14 years was for the whole of Belarus 1986: 2 1987: 4 1988: 5 1989: 7 1990: 29 1991: 59 1992: 66 1993: 79 1994: 82 1995: 91 1996: 84 1997: 66. The game is thoroughlly scary and I’m only in the beginning stages! I don’t know if I’ll have the guts to pass the whole thing, some have called it the scariest PC game :o.
The game has various endings depending on how you choose to progress - meaning it isn’t just a linear plot. I’m proud to be able to say that the game was made by a Ukrainian company. It’s so strange to be playing the English version and hear people speaking Russian in the background - it adds new depth to the game and makes me feel more involved. I think those who just understand the English parts are missing out greatly.

At this point we know the devestation that the radiation caused, many places in the US are taking down the nuclear power plants, many are already shit down or are scheduled to be.. I must think that the insane accident at Chernobyl has something to do with that.
As safe as we are led to believe those power plants are two things can never change - There is still no safe method to dispose of waste and human error can not be set aside.

What was the sequence of events?
The accident in reactor no. 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power station took place in the night of 25 to 26 April 1986, during a test. The operating crew planned to test whether the turbines could produce sufficient energy to keep the coolant pumps running in the event of a loss of power until the emergency diesel generator was activated.
In order to prevent the test run of the reactor being interrupted, the safety systems were deliberately switched off. For the test, the reactor had to be po
First we had China, host of the 2008 Olympic Games, going to great measures to get their host town ready by shutting down 1,000 illegal coal mines as well as trying to fix the massive air pollution problems they have. Now comes word that the 2012 Olympics site of London has its own issues to deal with.Low levels of radioactive waste were found during the cleanup of the main site for the 2012 London Olympics. So now we have coal mines, air pollution and radioactive waste at future Olympic sites. Maybe Chicago can have competitors drink the water from the Chicago River if they end up with the 2016 games to make everyone feel at home."It is important that this find is kept in perspective," said ODA chief executive David Higgins.Yes, keep it in perspective. Radioactive waste is very common in places where athletic events take place."This area is a 100-year-old waste dump and several factories and workshops nearby were known to be using radium paint between the 1930s and 1960s," the ODA.So i

Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AEC) have found evidence that certain fungi possess another talent beyond their ability to decompose matter: the capacity to use radioactivity as an energy source for making food and spurring their growth. Detailing the research in Public Library of Science ONE, AEC’s Arturo Casadevall said his interest was piqued five years ago when he read about how a robot sent into the still-highly-radioactive Chernobyl reactor had returned with samples of black, melanin-rich fungi that were growing on the ruined reactor’s walls. “I found that very interesting and began discussing with colleagues whether these fungi might be using the radiation emissions as an energy source,” explained Casadevall.
Casadevall and his co-researchers then set about performing a variety of tests using several different fungi. Two types - one that was induced to make melanin (Crytococcus neoformans) and another that naturally contains it

Stalker Review
So we were 5 years in the waiting. Was it worth the wait…..in my opinion certainly not. That said S.T.A.L.K.E.R is still a very goof FPS.
Firstly the reason we were waiting 5 years for what is a game that could have been delivered 2 years ago technology wise, is the fact that the small development team in Ukraine had to constantly update the game engine to keep up with the times and also build in some unique game features in the meantime!
As an FPS Stalker is excellent. The game features some excellent ballistic physics that move the game away from Quake + Doom in terms of holding the fire button and strafing! The weapons have varying accuracy and rates of fire, leading to a more realistic approach as you simply cannot spray approaching enemies on full auto as you will hit nothing. You mainly fire single shot or burst mode and go for upper body/head shots.
The RPG elements of Stalker are not so good. The inventory system is clunky and there is no character develop
Overview... On the afternoon of April 12 in 2006, a massive explosion shattered the Chernobyl area. The Zone, as the area got to be known, was characterized by anomalous energy disturbances, rendering even the most advanced form of protective suits worthless to would be rescue teams. Months passed and nothing could be done. The military quarantined the area to prevent unauthorized entry and perhaps even reassure the local populace that the area was under control and confinement. Almost 4 years after the initial event, expeditions can now safely traverse several kilometers deep into the Zone. Among these are the Stalkers, poachers that enter the zone searching for artifacts and anomalous formations that are highly sought after by certain organizations and groups. The player controls a Stalker, venturing into the Zone in order to acquire information, technology and artifacts to sell and possibly put a mysterious puzzle together.
