Nationwide and Cheltenham & Gloucester have become the latest lenders to trim their mortgage rates, reflecting a slight easing in wholesale borrowing costs.Nationwide, the country's second-biggest mortgage lender, said it would cut its popular two-year fixed-rate loans on Friday by 0.3 of a percentage point, with three-year and five-year mortgages dropping by 0.12 and 0.17 of a percent age poi
The reason I didn't post on the blog yesterday was because I'm currently at Cheltenham, winning money on the horses. The Cheltenham Festival Guide 2008 has a section entitled 'What the Experts Think?'. Never mind the exclamation mark, I was taken by this quote from Hughie Morrison, trainer of Starzaan:Starzaan is a class horse who has all sorts of problems with legs, wind etcDoesn't sounds very class to me. I have a mental picture of Starzaan (pictured below) limping and farting his way across the finishing line...

It’s not often I go to festivals like this - in fact I don’t think I have ever been to one. For the UK film industry it did seem to attract some big names well worth listening to. There were people such as screenwriters Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and The Order of The Phoenix); William [...]

Three days down and one to go. And today is the pinnacle; Gold Cup Day. Favourite Kauto Star will be attempting to win £1million for his owners by capturing the blue ribband showpiece event. Much talk has centred around his ability lately, and whether or not he can get away with the jumping mistakes he has made in the King George and other races. Today will tell if Ruby can get him around safely.Below is a quick guide to tips for today.1400 JCB Triumph Hurdle - Degas Art1435 Brit Insurances Novices Hurdle - Ornais (each way)1515 Totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup - Exotic Dancer1600 Christie's Foxhunter Chase - Sonevafushi (each way)1640 Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase - Demi Beau1720 Vincent O'Brien County Handicap Hurdle - Made In Japan (each way)Find another comprehensive review of each day of the festival over at Punting for Profitstags: cheltenham
A some what disastrous days tipping, only saving graces been High Cotton and Adamant Approach placing in the last two races of the day. Having put a hefty bet on Black Jack Ketchum earlier i was thoroughly disappointed with his fall at the first. A basic early error saw him depart a fence one. With one day to go, I'm very tempted to go against my gut feeling and try and recoup my losses with a big bet on Kauto Star in the Gold Cup. Hopefully I'll have a visions of him crossing the line in front of the field in my dreams tonight, a sure fire sign he'll win!!1400 Jewson Novices Chase – Kings Advocate - 6th1435 Ryanair Chase - Racing Demon - 5th1515 Ladbrokes World Hurdle - Black Jack Ketchum -fell1600 Racing Post Plate - Nycetos (each way) - 20th1640 National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup - High Cotton (each way) - 4th1720 Pertemps Final - Adamant Approach (each way) - 3rdtags:cheltenham
Two days down and two to go. Thursday is easily the weakest day for championship races in the festival, having been built in to accommodate an extra day for the new modern Cheltenham. Thursday's two big ones are the Ryanair Chase and the Ladbrokes World Hurdle. In the latter, much has been made of the current form of Black Jack Ketchum, but I feel tomorrow with the ground continuing to dry out that this horse will be back to his best after his dire run in testing ground last time out, and I fancy him to win in the same fashion as Denman did yesterday. If punters are looking for a bit of value, I’d recommended an each-way bet on Lough Derg in the same race. Also Hi Cloy offers a bit of value in the Ryanair Chase.Below is a quick guide to my tips for today.1400 Jewson Novices Chase – Kings Advocate.1435 Ryanair Chase - Racing Demon.1515 Ladbrokes World Hurdle - Black Jack Ketchum.1600 Racing Post Plate - Nycetos (each way).1640 National Hunt Chase Challenge Cup - High Cotton (each w

After some of my fellow bloggers enlightened me of the fact that In Fact, Ah could actually be considered as a strong contender for this year's Pulitzer Prize and that my plagiarism gaffe yesterday had seriously endangered this lofty dream, I have realised that my recent foray into the world of journalism is still a little rough around the edges. And so, in relation to the whole "CopyPasteGate" scandal that has engulfed In Fact, Ah , I can only offer my sincere and humble apologies to my fellow bloggers and In Fact, Ah readers - my only feeble defence being "imitation is the greatest form of flattery". Now that I think of it, that also explains why you don't see too many Cahony-esq hairstyles round these days.Okay. Enough of the small talk; lets get down to the real business. Day 1 at Cheltenham was one for our bookmaking friends. With winners coming in at 40 and 50/1, it wasn't a good day for most punters, especially me. Not one of my tips came in yesterday, something I hope wonâ

With less than a week to go to this year's festival, things are gradually beginning to shape up. With rain continuing to fall at the Cotswold venue, the going is likely to be soft. This has seen frantic movement in the betting market, with horses been backed in and also drifting out. The last week has seen many high profile horses having to withdraw; the big two being current Gold Cup champion War of Attrition and In Compliance. I'd already tipped these horses in an earlier post and still feel if either had ran, one would have won.Come race week, log on to In Fact,Ah to get your daily tips. Until then, here's two more ante-post tips. Cane Break in the Gold Cup - this horse has been backed in from 33-1 to 16's in past few days. I also fancy Kings Advocote, 12/1, in Jewson Novices H'cap Chase on Thursday. Both horses will enjoy the soft ground.tags:cheltenham
Cheltenham Festival 13 – 16 MarchThe Cheltenham festival is nearly upon us and, although I ordinarily focus on Football and to some degree Tennis, one cannot ignore this great festival of horseracing.I don’t believe you can make sustained returns betting on horses so I will not be tipping any horses to win. Instead I thought I’d take a look at tic-tac, the sign language used by on course bookmakers to indicate movements in the price of a horse. (Admittedly a dying art but interesting nonetheless!) Aside from the strange sign-language you’ll be able to tell a tic-tac chap from his white gloves and wooden crate!Note: All of the examples below are based on a handicap with more than 16 runners. Each-way payouts can vary depending on the size of field and type of race.………………………………………………………EvensYou won’t get any major Cheltenham races with an Even Money favourite which is a shame because in tic-tac terms it looks like your dad disco dancing

A few years ago losing points to Cheltenham would have been a disgrace. Tonight, just a couple of days into 2007, Crewe Alexandra must be grateful for a point. Spending almost a decade in the Championship (level two of the English pyramid) is but a faint memory. Desperate fans can now smell the bottom division. The worst thing about the whole fiasco is that the club seems to be powerless (or unwilling) to tackle the issues head on. I've backed manager Dario Gradi for years. He's gives 100% and has worked hard to build a solid foundation at the club. However, things have gone horribly wrong at Gresty Road since Dean Ashton moved on. Secrecy behind the scenes is one thing, but stories about the gaffer losing the dressing room have done little for supporter confidence. Moreover, after 23 years you have to ask if the great man has taken us as far as he can? Perhaps it is time to move aside. Let's get one thing straight - I DO NOT want to see Dario sacked. He does not deserve that. The t
Image from Flickr user Jimmy Six Bellies under CC Attribution, Noncommerical and No Derivative Works licenseFrancie is quite the expert when it comes to the nags and he's getting excited about Cheltenham already! He learned the gambling game when he came out of the Priory last year. Well, he had to occupy his mind somehow while off the grog. Don't even ask about his addiction to Sherbert Lemons - it's worse than all of his other vices put together! With the glorious racing festival that is Cheltenham only 11 weeks away, a lot of would-be contenders for the major prizes showed their credentials over the Christmas racing schedule. Here at In Fact, Ah we bring you a few ante-post tips on each of the main races for the festival.First off, the showpiece, the Gold Cup.In the King George at Kempton on Stephen's Day, Kauto Star showed why he is currently as low as 6/4 with some bookies to win this showpiece event .With Ruby Walsh onboard, he clattered both the fourth last and final fence a
The second installment from In Fact, Ah's expert on the contests of speed among horses that either are ridden by jockeys or pull sulkies and their drivers - Francie. Just so you know, the Cheltenham World Hurdle is taking place on Gold Cup day which also happens to be Ireland's National Drink Day, sometimes even called St.Patrick's Day. It's impossible to oppose the favourite Black Jack Ketchum here. If I was going to pick a banker for the festival it would have to be this horse, or should I say "machine"? Black Jack Ketchum has it all: speed, stamina and jumping ability. Currently trading at 4/5, he'll be extremely hard to beat unless conditions are very testing. Even then, I can't envisage this horse losing. Put the house, kids, wife and pension trust on him. Two horses I can see challenging Black Jack Ketchum to the line is firstly, Asian Maze, and that's if he runs. He's also entered for the Champion Hurdle, and currently trading at 10/1 he gives a bit of each-way valu
The First big race of festival week is the Champion Hurdle ran on day one. Run just over 2miles, its ran a quite a gallop, but winners must be able to clear each hurdle and then tackle the famous uphill finish at an electrfying speed to come home first. The Irish have done very well in the race in recent years, with the great Aiden O'Brein trained Istabraq winning it 3 times, denied a certain history making 4 in a row by the foot and mouth outbreak, which led to the cancellation of the festival. More recently Hardy Eustace has won it twice and last years winner Brave Inca has added to Irelands recent success.Brave Inca is back to defend his crown, but he will face stern competition from a number of contenders, most notebly, the english trained Detroit City. Previous winner Hardy Eustace, ran a great race in beating both Brave Inca & Macs Joy to capture the AIG Champion Hurdle at Leopardstown on 28th January '07 and can't be ignored, on his recent Festival form alone. English
My pores are starting to seep sweat what with this year's Cheltenham festival just three weeks away. Along with many other punters I'm starting to get giddy at the prospect of a great racing festival. The second race of this year's festival week will be the the Arkle Chase. Named after the great steeplechaser Arkle, who won the Gold Cup three years in a row, this race has seen a strong Irish representation in recent years but success has been most notable with Martin Pipe-trained winners, like Contraband and Well Chief in recent years. Run over exactly two miles, the Arkle requires both speed and good jumping technique to compete well and the recent form is often a good guide. Analysis of recent Arkle winners points towards entrants coming to Cheltenham on the back of an impressive season. Shocks in the Arkle are few and far between and the market favourites usually perform well. The race has a clear favourite in Fair Along - the best price available has been at 11/4. This horse will
