Chavez is a man who played a HUGE role in organizing migrant farm workers (mostly in California) in order to have a unified voice against the abusive practices of the farm owners, and served for many years as the President of the United Farm Workers (UFW). There is a bias against Chavez, an unnatural and unhealthy one, that pervades the political discourse in America. Even those who aren’t sympathetic to the man and his movement (if they allow themselves a moment of honesty) must admit that fact. Most of Chavez’ actions since becoming president have been overblown, with the press and legislators more inclined to demonize than to understand.
As for myself, I largely sympathize with his aims, if not always his methods. But the fact is, he too often makes it too easy for those who wish to paint him as a villain. Here is a short list of mis-steps, ones that, in my point of view, left him vulnerable to attacks from detractors without bringing sufficient political gain.

The BBC reports that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez’ proposed constitutional reforms were defeated by a narrow 51% to 49% vote. The leader was quoted saying “Now, Venezuelans, let’s put our trust in our institutions.” The opposition could “barely hide their delight,” correspondents reported.
This defeat could be a pivotal moment in the Chavez administration, and not only because this is the first real defeat Chavez and his socialist vision have suffered at the polls.
The way he handles the result will be indicative of the type of ruler he is — if he attempts to circumvent the vote with authoritarian decrees, the image his detractors paint of an autocrat bent on subverting democracy will be strengthened. If he handles the situation with nobility, and humility, he will have shown that this image was overblown and, to a large extent, undeserved.
Though it is still too early to determine, initial indications seem to point to the latter. As such,

Denunciaron la entrega de cargamento a un base militar venezolana en Trinidad. El caudillo caribeño había dicho que instalaría un “Vietnam de las ametralladoras” para defender a su amigo.
Un avión con el escudo de la Venezuela arribó a la ciudad de Trinidad con un cargamento sospechoso, según informaron funcionarios de Prefectura a la Radio boliviana Fides.
El material que llevaba la aeronave chavista fue cargado en 10 camiones. Al ser consultados sobre el cargamento, los militares bolivianos dijeron que se trataba de medicinas que serían trasladas al hospital militar. (more…)

The caption appeared to be a production mistake — confusing a Chavez news item with one on the death of a football star. The anchor said “take the image down” when he realized.
But Chavez called for a probe in an interview on state television, where he repeatedly reviewed a tape of the broadcast, questioning why the unconnected photograph and wording were left on screen for several seconds.
“I want the state prosecutor to look into bringing a suit against CNN for instigating murder in Venezuela,” he said. “… undoubtedly it is part of the psychological warfare.”

Los locutores que hicieron una broma de mal gusto a Christian Chávez durante la emisión de un programa radial la semana pasada han expresado que están dispuestos a ofrecer una disculpa pública al integrante de RBD, a quien corrieron de dicha emisora, luego de que éste le hiciera una señal obscena con el dedo.
“Si decide venir al programa y disculparse, yo no tengo ningún problema en pedirle perdón, abrazarlo y comenzar de nuevo con la entrevista”, dijo Enrique Santos, presentador de El show de Enrique y Joe (La Kalle), a la agencia de noticias Notimex.
