We spent last weekend at Lake Tahoe with good friends who brought a magnum of the 1995 Chateau Gazin, Pomerol, Bordeaux Blend (among others). Today I am doing a quick review of a wine we had a couple of nights ago with good friends. We bought this bottle at the winery as a library wine, I would guess about 5 years ago. This was our only bottle, and this is the first time we have tasted this wine (they did not pour it at the winery when we purchased it). 400 cases was made.Chateau St Jean 1996 Sonoma County Reserve Merlot has a dark ruby red/brick color in the glass. The nose displays surprisingly concentrated fruit with dark cherry, plum, slight notes of raisin, and soft vanilla. On the palate, plum, cherry, and dark raspberry with an earthy note. The tannins are moderate and silky, but still with an edge, in this medium to fullbodied wine.My impression of this wine is close to what I had expected. The region of Languedoc Roussillon is one of the most fascinating areas in France. It borders the Mediterranean sea to the east and the Pyrenees mountains to the south. Large majestic beach or oak trees often frame these beautiful old houses. Once, when they were new, I suppose they stood out stark and solid, fenced by skinny saplings. Now after many years they seem to belong in the landscape, settling into the arms of the trees, shadow and dappled sunlight playing on crumbling walls, comfortable in their skin, faded beauty still stunning.

This month’s Licorice of the Month Club selections included a couple of somewhat unique confections and a tasty old standby. I started with the Chateau D’Lanz Swiss Licorice. It comes in a pretty gold foil bag and is described as “The Ultimate Hard Licorice Drop.” I wasn’t sure what to expect, but from the picture on the Licorice International website, I thought they would perhaps be similar to a softer drop but in a firm texture. However, I was mistaken. For one thing, the drops I received were completely squished down and stuck together. This may have been from melting, but I’m not entirely sure. I paid careful attention to the advice on the back of the package to “Suck, don’t chew!” and popped one in my mouth. Due to the strange shape, it wasn’t very comfortable, but I persevered. The Da Vinci Code books and films has placed a number of sights in the Pyrenees firmly on the tourist circuit. Of these, by far the easiest to get to is the village of Rennes le Chateau which is about 15 minutes drive from Quillan on the Carcassonne road. Not so long ago, there was one relatively small car park which would have held at most 20 cars yet when we went recently we found a stream of car park signs starting about a mile before the village. However, the main rush of tourists following the release of the film has now died down so even on a public holiday there weren’t the crowds that these car parks anticipate. We were lucky enough to stay at the Chateau Frontenac during our stay in Quebec City. While we were there, we toured the hotel with Gaston, a tour guide who played the part of a porter from the late 19th century. He had several interesting stories about the hotel and its guests. Some of what we learned:The Chateau was built for the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 1800's. Several luxury hotels were being built at the time, including Banff Springs Hotel and Windsor Station in Montreal. The railway wanted to encourage the wealthy to travel on its trains to visit those destinations, and the hotels were the lure.The brick used for the hotel came from Scotland. It was used for ballast in ships coming to North America to get timber. When the ships arrived, they dumped the brick to make room for the timber. I picked up this little beauty at my local grocery store for only $9.99.Chateau de Segries is owned and operated by the Hendri de Lanzac family since 1994. The Chateau is located in Lirac, just across the Rhone river from Chateauneuf du Pape, and the average age of the vines are over 30 years.The 2005 Cote-du-Rhone Rouge is made from 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Carignan.Dark red in the glass with black berry, dark fruit, and a hint of toast and vanilla on the nose.Once in your mouth, full and round fruit with dark plum and slightly tart fruit. Nice acidity and smooth, well integrated, tannins, the palate ending in a medium length finish.I thought this was a really nice wine for the price ($9.99). This is an Algerian red wine. We are not used of drinking wine from this part of the world but believe me, it is worth the try. It is a medea appellation. Very good quality/price ratio. I had a 1998 vintage meaning that this wine can easily be kept in your cellar between 8 to 10 years. You will feel all the Algerian sun through the taste of wild fruits.
