Gardening A Pastime Continued For Centuries
Plants were here long before people or animals were. While earliest man supplemented his staple diet of animal meat with gathered nuts and berries, people of later ages learned to cultivate crops to feed more people more reliably, leading to the more diverse diet we enjoy today. Because man’s new knowledge of plant propagation freed a great deal of time he had previously used for survival, he be

The Martial Arts Master Who Has Lived in Three Centuries
He is a legendary man whose life has crossed three centuries. Born in the 19th year of Emperor Guangxu's Reign of the Qing Dynasty (1893), he is 114 years old. His name is Lu Zijian and he lives in Chongqing City, Sichuan Province, China. Despite his age, he is healthy and lithe. Once considered one of the top three gong fu masters, Lu is adept at martial arts and can still move a young man of around 150 pounds 15 feet away with just one push. When asked what his secret to longevity is, Mr. Lu said, "The key to a long and healthy life is a combination of movement and stillness—cultivating life by guiding the qi, the vital energy in the body, and moving the hands and feet through practicing Chinese boxing." According to Xinmin Evening News, Lu Zijian started learning martial arts with hi

      Dive Index - For Centuries
Can a mind float? Mine seems to be floating above and beyond time. The percussion is the key – both timeless and borderless, but it doesn’t end there. The bass playing is subtle, the synths and guitars holding my visions on unseen strings high above the atmosphere. As the singer reminds me, we are “bound by the skins with eyes that look out and barely ever can see in” – but the arrangement of the voices and the instruments allow me to overreach the boundaries and see both inwards and outwards at the same time. Extremely cool – almost dreamlike. The actual poem, for me, speaks out against current world leaders (“senseless crusades”), but goes deeper and explores the truth that we are all an integral part of whatever the leaders have done (“the pulse that beats behind rib c

      Rugs, A Tradition Of Centuries
Rugs are present in many cultures and they are always an excellent decorative item. They also condense the most powerful symbols of those cultures.A good rug can change completely the style of a place, and also enhance or improve it. Their colors and textures can change the perception of everything around it.There are some on-line stores that sell area rugs. Among the bests of them is www.superiorrugs.com.In Superior Rugs there are traditional hand made rugs (of wool, silk and other fibers) as well as machine made rugs (of natural and synthetic fibers). They have rugs of many styles: Oriental, Persian, Berber, Native American, contemporary... And also using different manufacturing techniques, like woven, tufted, bordered, textured, and more.A rug can be a very important element of a room. Y

Mark Story: Living In Three Centuries
I recently ran across an amazing set of portraits by photographer Mark Story, taken as part of his project entitled "Living In Three Centuries: The Face Of Age". His project started as an effort to photograph people who, because of living extraordinarily hard lives, appeared worn and aged beyond their years. It ultimately morphed into photographing those who have lived during three centuries, the centenarians and 'super-centenarians', whose life has encompassed the end of the 1800's, the 1900's, and, now, the new millennium. I find it interesting that the original idea of photographing those that appear worn beyond their years ultimately turned into making portraits of those who have lived longer than most of us can hope to.The portraits are haunting and extremely expressive. They are a

Telling Time Through The Centuries With Grandfather Clocks
By: Andrei MyersThe swing of the pendulum brought back the grandfather clocks. The new breed of clocks retains the old charisma but have new interesting features. These are surely must-haves for the incurable romantics.Step back into timeMans compulsive need to know the time dates back to ancient eras. This was dictated by the seasons and his need to hunt, plant, and harvest. Before the grandfather clocks took its important place in the history of horology, people told the time by the shadow of the sun on the meridian line or by the rate that water dripped from a vessel with a tiny hole.Until the 1500s, people had to rely on inaccurate time telling devices. Galileo Galilei opened the way to the improvement of mechanical time devices. He hit upon the idea of using the pendulum to provide a better way to keep time. This idea and was later improvised by Christian Huygens, a Dutchman, but his clock erred by one minute less a day. Being able to detect this was already a huge advancement in

The Explosion of the McPub: Desecrating Centuries of Irish Pubbery
How can World Hum get this so wrong? Recent years have seen the rise of what Guinness calls the Irish Pub Concept. Diaego, the parent company of the famed Irish beermaker, as well as the Irish Pub Company and others, see the Irish pub as a way of spreading “Irishness” across the globe, often by exporting the materials necessary for an “authentic” Irish pub—the music, the staff, the beer, etc.—to Dubai, Kazakhstan and other seemingly unlikely places. The rise has led to cries that such bars are becoming the McDonald’s of the pub trade, which could have some merit. But more significant, it seems, the Irish pub represents an effort to connect people through something the parts of the world that drink alcohol can appreciate—a night out in a welcoming place, accompanied by a full, creamy pint. Faux Irish pubs represent a Disney-fication of the sacred, time-honored traditions of everything genuine Irish pubs in Ireland stand for. They’re increasingly prevalent here in

Henna - Make-up Across the Centuries
How did we as humans arrive at the point where we spend billions every year on cosmetics and it became the social norm for women to wear cosmetics everyday It is certain a lady way back in history did not just wake up one morning and decide to apply eyelashes, lipstick, eyeliner, foundation, and rouge all at the same time. As you probably guessed, it was a combination of thousands of years and a lot of mistakes. The Egyptians were the first to use cosmetics. That was over four millenia ago. Cleanliness and looks were very serious to the people of Egypt. The Egyptians believed the appearance was in direct connection with the health of the soul. They tried to always look and smell agreeable. And with a civilization who values their looks, societies are assuredly going to have people who are going to try and stand out. The Egyptians, being the cutting edge civilization they were, used cosmetics for reasons that were even more intelligent than just attempting to look great. Mesdemet was th

      The New Centuries
Our coverage of Bay area bands keeps getting better and better, thanks to a thriving San Francisco music scene. The New Centuries are the newest band I’ve been listening to and it’s not my usual flavor of music. They have a sound that is a throwback to the keyboard heavy, alternative movement of the 80’s. Among their list of influences, you’ll find the Talking Heads, Wolf Parade, and Sonic Youth. I’d also throw in The Church and Echo and the Bunnymen. Regardless of the comparisons you’ll draw when listening to The New Centuries on their self-titled EP, you’ll also hear an up and coming band putting out solid tracks while they continue to polish their sound. Global Warming Started, Man Made & "Unstoppable" for Centuries!!
That pretty much sums up the result from the 20 page report created by the world’s top climate scientists.  They say that Global Warming has already begun, was “very likely” (which they report is 90% accurate) caused by humans and is going to be unstoppable for centuries to come. These scientists, who make up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, also mention global warming is the cause of recent strong hurricanes. They also said ”the observed widespread warming of the atmosphere and ocean, together with ice-mass loss, support the conclusion that it is extremely unlikely that global climate change of the past 50 years can be explained without external forcing, and very likely that is not due to known natural causes aloe.” This report includes the most authoritative science on global warming and is based off of science that is rock-solid.  The scientists also mention that the report is conservative, because scientists are also skeptics, but t

A Brief History Of Frame Throughout The Centuries
The use of the world frame transferred to common language to indicate the relationship between an object and its environmental context gives some idea of the importance of what is commonly referred to as the container with regard to the contained Just as in the case of a building one notes the harmony with the surrounding landscape or urban framework, so with a painting should one observe how the frame is in tone both with the subject matter of the picture itself and with the surrounding wall, since the frame has the double function of completing the work of art and at the same time harmonizing with the space around it
