Nokia E71 and E66 Phones Stuffed with Two Cameras, Wi-Fi, GPS and More [Cellphones]The E66 and E71, two Nokia E-Series cellphones in last week's rumor mill, are now official. Up top is the E71, a slick QWERTY phone that's a lot less chunky than its predecessor, the E61. It comes equipped with a 3.2MP camera in the back, a front cam for video calls, Wi-Fi and GPS, just like the E66 down below. The
By Lisa KatayamaJune 6, WiredTOKYO -- Steve Jobs' new iPhone, expected to be unveiled Monday, is headed to Japan by the end of the year. But the device's famed ease of use may actually be a put off in Japan, where consumers want features, not simplicity.Indeed, Japanese handsets have become prime examples of feature creep gone mad. In many cases, phones in Japan are far too complex for users to ma

Of the many things I'm trying to help my 80 year old FIL with, I've managed to tackle a couple of them and I'm working on a couple more. Tonight I've been working on the cell phone issue. Did you know that retired consumer electronics appliances could bring you a fortune? Even before recycling, if you decided to mine them for precious metals. The new trend is as scientific as possible, and even got a name: "Urban mining". The idea behind it is the fact that scrap parts hold significant amounts of gold, silver, copper, or precious gems such as iridium. This urban mining can bring significant profits, as precious metals are getting more and more expensive. Even the common rough materials, such as copper, are well priced, not to mention the re-usable plastics. Gold is used on a large scale in manufacturing computer hardware and mobile phones, as it has higher conductive properties than copper or silver.According to Sekigawa a Japanese inventor, a ton of ore extracted from a con

Here are the Cellphones that are to be launched this year by Motorola. According to Gizmodo these Cellphones are pretty much retreads of old devices, and there aren't any great new form factors—not even an iPhone clone—to speak of. The ZN5 model has some cool features like 5-megapixel camera, Xenon flash, 2.4-inch display, 500MHz Freescale processor and Montavista Linux. Trust us, this isn't the first time LocaModa's dabbled in the cellphone-controlled gadgetry game, but it's never been more friendly than it's being with the Social Jukebox. The aforesaid company has teamed up with TouchTunes in order to give patrons the ability to interact with flat-panels on TouchTunes jukeboxes. On-screen applications will include information about the song currently playing, elusive "user generated content" and even "patron photos" from their social networking profiles (scary?). For those completely absorbed in this stuff, you can even keep tabs on the interactions via data feeds from your favorite network. The last time we caught Sony Ericsson's Paris on the tubes it looked a little chunkier, but now the aesthetics have been immensley improved. For the proof check out the image above. USEB has run a complete run down of the expected specifications, so jump in for the best of what they found.
Along with what we have already heard, the cellphone will now carry an alleged QWERTY keypad with multifunction keys, a metal construction, sliding lens cover for the 5MP camera, Bluetooth 2.0, 3G capability, UIQ 3.3 touchscreen WQVGA display, Google Maps and Wayfinder 7.0 support, as well as the excellent Mobile Opera 9.5 web browser. If all that holds to be true, this looks to be shping up very nicely indeed.
On a side note, the source, USEB, tends to be so accurate with their Sony Ericcson related
The chaps at Phone Arena have managed to gain some leaked press shots of AT&T's LG Vu, and it is looking tastier than before. The Vu will come in two primary versions; the CU915 will lack a mobile TV antenna, whilst the CU920 will be supplied with mobile TV antenna, which will support AT&T's new, streaming TV service. Checkout the gallery for some more great shots, then jump for the specs.
The features the handsets will share include a 3-inch WQVGA 262K color touchscreen, 2MP camera with autofocus, HTML web browser, HSDPA connectivity, 120MB internal memory, USB mass storage mode, and up to 4GB microSD card support. Standing in at 4.25"H x 2.16"W x 0.51"D, the LG Vu is slightly on the larger side, but we can look past its inherent big bones to the 1000mAh battery, which will su

We like to think that NTT, Japan's dominant telephone company, is a serious corporation. So when NTT DoCoMo issues a press release claiming to have successfully demonstrated the world's first "molecular delivery system for molecular communication," we figure this must be significant. The technology and biochemistry at the foundation sure seems to be. In an experiment, NTT DoCoMo confirmed the use of synthesized DNA to transport specific molecules through the body. The process converts chemical energy into mechanical work so there's no need for an external power supply or control mechanism. The hope then is to one day plant a "biochip" in a cellphone which can read "excitement, emotion, stress or disease" from the simmering juices (blood, sweat and tears) pooled insi
Korean mobile phone manufacturer Pantech recently organized a contest in which students from Korean Universities were asked to create design concepts for cellphones that can be made available by 2010. And in its conclusion, five dazzling mobile phone concept designs were released. Pictured here is the Cell Dot cellphone design, featuring a very minimalist overall look and feel, plus it’s seriously slim. Other designs include the Tower Lily, Wavy Stream, Waterfall Fish, and Simplice Section. With the way things are working right now, it’s a little hard to believe that phones just like this one will be available in just two short years. Well, although I’m certainly up for something like this, at this point in time I just don’t see where a device like this would be coming from. But the
The otherwise run-of-the-mill LG SH240 GSM HSDPA phone comes with a silicon (or maybe silicone?) coating on its front, including keypad and d-pad, in order to give the user the feeling of touching skin, rather than cold, unfeeling rubber. And then, to drive the point home, LG hired hot models and told them to touch each other. Nice going, LG. There's a second even more "explanatory" pic of the Korea-only phone (and models) below.

Samsung's latest introduction, the SCH-W420/W4200 in the video below, is a slender, iPhone-like handset with a 3.2" touchscreen, a lively user interface, and the kind of force feedback that the LG Prada phone could only dream of.
With just three actual buttons at the bottom, it relies mainly on a touch interface that you can customize (if you know Korean), with drag-and-drop desktop building. In the force feedback dept., it uses a vocabulary of 22 different vibrations to simulate actual feels and actions. When you see a volume knob for the radio and reach to turn it, you hear and feel the clicks of an old-timey dial.
The phone, which includes a terrestrial broadcast TV receiver, is going to sell for $700 to $800 and is Korea only—but for how long? Bring it, Sammy! We're waiting.
Samsung engineers managed to squeeze a fully functional CMOS module providing 8 megapixels of image resolution or cellphone cameras in an area measuring just 28 x 15.3 x 8.5mm. Samsung said cellphones using this chip may surface by the end of the year, but we are not holding our breath, especially not for U.S. availability.CMOS modules for cellphones have not been able to match the image quality that is delivered by much larger CMOS versions or CCDs in digital cameras. The simple fact that this chip can output more pixels does not really change the circumstance that sensors on the chip are exposed to significantly less light. So don’t expect much more than snapshot capability from such a chip, even with that monster resolution. However, aside from that, there are some interesting features

Two of Indonesia’s leading Islamic organisations are squabbling over whether mobile phone ringtones that reproduce the Islamic call to prayer or verses from the Koran are a good thing or a sin.In Indonesia, the country with the world’s largest Muslim population, such ringtones are becoming more and more popular among the population.Maruf Amin, the head of the Indonesia Ulema Council, the highest government-sanctioned religious institution, argued that it is a positive development that could help people to often think about God.“Any incoming call will make the owner of the mobile phones remember the Creator. I do not see this as an abuse towards Islam,” he told the Indonesia news service ‘detik.’"It's even good. When we're waiting for something, we could use the time and listen to the call to prayer, for example,” he added. On the other side of the fence, Amlir Syaifa Yasin, a member of the fatwa council of the Islamic Propagation Council of Indonesia has said that he is
What is Blueeee!?Blueeee! is a FREE bluetooth instant messenger for mobile phones. Fun, fast, and easy to use, Blueeee! utilizes Bluetooth technology to search for friends online and chat with them exactly the same way as you would do with MSN/Windows Live Messenger, ICQ, Yahoo AIM, or other instant messenging programs on your computer. Is messaging with Blueeee! completely free?
Yes, most instant messaging programs on mobile phones use either the SMS or the Internet service provided by a cellular network to connect to the respective messaging services, and this costs money, because data and messages are routed through the service provider (eg. AT&T, Cingular). Blueeee! uses Bluetooth technology to communicate directly with another mobile phone running Blueeee!, and therefore bypasses the cellular network. This results in a completely free and unlimited communication channel between your cellular phones, and that of your friends and the people around you.

Let’s face it: for guys, cell phones go in pockets (women have purses). Having them clipped to your belt looks and feels awkward. But most cell phones, while they look cool, aren’t designed for pockets.
IdeaSpark*: Design a cell phone specifically for the front pant pocket. This means:
The phone body is slightly curved to hug the thigh and limit protruding edges and corners.
Have curves all around the edges (like the pictured phone, called the Au Infobar, via Core77), also to limit pant bulge.
Make the shell silicone or rubber, for softness, and for more friction to prevent sliding around in the pocket.
The shape of the cellphone would be designed to fit in the pocket the same orientation everytime (i.e. with the top facing down, so when pulling it out of the pocket, it is ready to use).
A small cord or tab on the bottom of the phone, which will be easy to grab when you reach into your pocket.
Yes, I am suggesting substance over style, here. RAZRs may look cool; I wa

Cellphones: Panasonic's Pixi Phone Dock Automatically Sends Your Pictures to Mixi: "When we're sending naked pictures of ourselves to people we've never met, we want the process to go as quick as possible. Industrial Facility and luckybite -- two UK Design firms -- know that, and have teamed up with Madori Kuroda, Panasonic Japan's Chief mobile device designer, to create a prototype phone dock called the Panasonic Pixi. The Pixi, designed for the Mixi -- Japan's MySpace equivalent -- has six buttons that will use your phone's LCD screen, existing photos and internet connection to send your pictures directly to a diary, community, or pedophile on Mixi. There's no pricing or information about the gadget's release just yet -- in fact, the only thing we can be sure about is that it's going to look like a toy you'd find in a cereal box in the 80's.(Via Gizmodo.)

Free SMS: Using air to charge cellphones? IIT-Delhi does it!INDIA: All you need to charge your mobile is -- air!Students at the Department of Industrial Design at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi have attached a turbine with a mobile phone that helps charge it even when the user is travelling, Head of the Department Professor Lalit Kumar Das told PTI."The electricity generated by the turbine when moved by wind energy could charge a cellphone in an emergency. It generates electricity to the tune of 3 to 4 watts which is sufficient to charge a mobile phone," he said. The specially designed turbine, which costs about Rs 200 to be developed inside a laboratory, is so small that it could be easily kept in a pocket, he said. The primary objective of the device is to extend mobile 'connectivity' where there is no electricity. The device also saves energy, though not to a significant extent, he said. The electricity could also be used for other purposes such as illumination and playi
Here's a design concept by Daewoo Kim for a cellphone that might actually be practical in desperate situations, because when one phoneruns out of power, the other one can charge it up. And look at them, aren't they cute, spooning on that charger together? Cellphone purveyors will probably like this design, because it may entice people to buy two products instead of one. There's another unique idea built into this cellphone, too.Check out the picture above, where the phones are seen combining their screen real estate into one bigger screen, maybe a good idea for a couple to watch a movie on an airplane. With the phones' internal electronics combining themselves, both husband and wife could don Bluetooth headsets and enjoy the movie together while proving to their fellow passengers that they are indeed joined at the hip. If you don't mind all that togetherness implied by such a design, this might not be a bad idea, but that curved cellphone form factor may not be too comfortable in

Earlier today I was standing outside the hotel I’m staying in. My boss and the Bishop pull up and the Bishop says to me that his cellphone had a little glitch in it - but he accidentally dropped it and after that the glitch went away. Well, this afternoon I was sitting in a room at the civic center by myself. My phone was on the table in front of me, so I pushed it off the side to drop it thinking, well it worked for the Bishop. I picked it up and turned it on. Low and behold my cellphone is working again! Eat that Verizon!

Cellphones. Good? Bad? Evil, maybe? Sometimes I think they are all 3.
Since 2005 I’ve had 4 cellphones. The first broke in Nashville, TN at the Hard Rock Cafe downtown after I strummed a guitar that belonged to Johnny Cash. So I got another which was more like a toy in a cereal box and decided to switch carriers after about 6 months. So I got a Razr. I had that for 1 year exactly and it died after getting wet. Two weeks ago I got a replac
Now, Mozilla is exploring to provide you online space called Joey page, where you can store any information, related to any website (or a portion of website), which you can later access from your cellphone. This information may be static or dynamically changing also. For instance, suppose a website provides you dynamically changing online scores of some sport activity. You can store that portion on your Joey Page, and retrieve the current score through your cellphone. This way you get the latest updates on your cellphone and also do not encounter the ads and other unrelated stuff available on the original page.It is possible through a Mozilla Firefox add-on. For more information, visit infoworld or mozilla.org.
Wow, 426,000 cellphones are going to waste everyday! I know I am guilty of this as I’ve switched my phone about 3 times in the last year or so. But to keep up with all the technology and fast internet access, that’s probably what you gotta do. Maybe I can sell off all of my old phones.
Maybe the cellphone companies have to find a better way to disposing the cellphones or even better, let you trade your old cellphone for credit on the new phones. (But they won’t, they are too greedy)
The above picture is just a picture of how many 426,000 phones are when put into perspective.
Artist Chris Jordan thought that this number was just too big to imagine, so he decided to put it into perspective for you. To get an idea of the magnitude of this image, the full size shot measures in at 5′ x 8′4″. He also tries to portray less gadgety things like the amount of gun-related murders or SUV sales.

GoldVish Le Million
$1.3 million
Guinness World Records certifies this GoldVish phone as the most expensive in the world–1 million euros, or about $1.3 million. The odd-shaped device is made out of 18-carat white gold and features 1,800 diamonds totaling 120 carats. A Russian businessman bought Le Million for his wife last September at a luxury goods fair in Cannes, France. Don’t have a spare million for this made-by-request gadget? Geneva-based GoldVish has plenty of expensive phones in its lineup, including models with gold plating and diamond-studded cases.
