      Teens + cell phones = homemade porn?
      Several weeks ago, I was spot checking my 15 year-old son's cell phone picture gallery and stumbled upon a photo of a navel piercing sent by a freshman girl. When I asked him about it, he said, "Oh yeah, she sent that to a bunch of the guys after she had it done." Lovely. Just lovely. Even though I've written a book addressing the fast-growing trend of swapping inappropriate pictures and video clips, I was still caught off guard when I saw the picture. Of course, we shouldn't be surprised in the least. In fact, allow me to be so bold as to say that rare will be the boy who can graduate high school without receiving some form of homemade porn on his cell phone. Cubans Now Have Access to Cell Phones
      If seems Fidel Casto's little brother, President Raul Castro, who is now president of Cuba is loosening things up.  Ordinary Cubans lined up for blocks outside telephone stores to sign up for cellular phone service for the first time ever.  The service is costing the Cubans about US$120 to activate which is about half a year's wages on the average state salary. That doesn't even include the cell phone or credit to make and receive calls. However, the Cubans waited for more than an hour to get a handset. The new cell phone contracts will allow Cubans to make and receive overseas calls which is a key feature because the overwhelming majority of Cubans have relatives and friends in the United States.In most industrialized countries not having a cell phone is unthinkable;

      Calling Cards vs Cell Phones
      Recently, someone submitted a question about cell phones and calling cards to the Ask Me! page. I thought the question deserved a little bit more attention than just a short blurb and was a good topic to blog about.When I first traveled overseas, I used calling cards. I figured it was more convenient than scouting out a cell phone, especially since I was in each country for a only few weeks at a time. I only ever really needed to call my parents and wanted to remain unconnected from the greater world. Having a cellphone just didn't seem like I was getting off the grid. It was bad enough I was at an Internet cafe all the time! Wasn't the point of travel to get away from the trappings of modern life?So I used calling cards but, in the end, I ended up spending a lot to call home and, since th

      The City of Chicago is being sued via a class action lawsuit filed this week for arresting drivers talking on their cell phones.  The lawsuit claims that Chicago police are arresting and ticketing drivers by the thousands for violating the city's cell phone ban imposed about 2 years ago.  Drivers caught talking on their cell phones are typically charged $75 and up to $200 if they are involved in an accident.  Attorney Blake Horwitz filed the lawsuit against the city of Chicago, Mayor Richard Daley, and several police officers.  Horwitz claims that the law prohibiting Chicago residents from using cell phones while driving hasn't been properly enacted. His firm specializes in police misconduct and has sued the city of Chicago more than 100 times.The law, 625 ILCS 5/11207, requires the city of Chicago to post signs warning drivers not to talk on their cell phones while driving.  However, here are no signs posted in the city of Chicago, which makes the fine

      Great Example Why You Simply Can't Believe That Cell Phones Are Safe
      Linked below is an old advertisement for a “shoe-fitting fluoroscope” -- essentially, an X-ray machine used to look at the bones of your foot in order to judge your shoe size. As little as 60 years ago, these devices were pervasive and thought to be harmless. But by the early 1950s, a number of professional organizations had issued warnings about the continued use of shoe-fitting fluoroscopes -- some thirty years after they were invented and routinely used. Today we know how risky and carcinogenic X-rays can be. One shoe model received such a serious radiation burn from a shoe-fitting fluoroscope that her leg had to be amputated. I hope that it will take us less than thirty years to recognize the major danger resulting from exposure to the explosion of information carrying radio waves around us -- especially from cell phones, but also from WiFi, WiMax, BlueTooth, and other wireless devices. We are being bombarded with dangerous radiation, for these devices are far more common than

      Recalls, cell phones, and teachers!
      I have been trying to kick this lingering cold to the curb for acouple of weeks now, very frustrating how it just seems towant to hang around. But that doesn't mean that I haven'tbeen keeping my eye on the odd, amusing, or troublingheadline! First off, a thread that has been way too commomon this site, another food recall, and again concerning groundbeef. American Foods Group recalled 96,000 pound of groundchuck and sirloin that had been distributed to several statesin the midwest and mid-Atlantic, including Virginia. Kind of sad that recalls are so common now that they aren't really news.The next story is one that really surprised me only because I'msurprised we don't read more of such instances. A man in California was killed by a train when he stepped out in front ofit while talking on his cell phone. Apparently the guy was waitingfor one train to pass, and when it did, stepped into the path ofanother one going the opposite direction. Bystanders reported that he was obviousl

      Cell Phones Can Literally Kill You
      A 33 year old Korean man was found dead on November 28, apparently killed by a cell phone battery explosion. The cell phone was made by LG Electronics. The man, identified only by his family name, Sur, was found dead by his co-workers at a quarry in North Chungcheong Province where he was employed as a shovel operator. According to the co-worker who found him, "He had a mobile phone with a melted battery in his left shirt pocket. His shirt had soot on it in the shape of the phone." Professor Kim Hoon at Chungbuk National University, who examined the body, attributed the death to a phone battery explosion.” He was injured in the left side of his chest. His ribs and spine were broken. The explosion punctured his heart and lungs, leading to his death," Kim said. As you likely know, a greater risk from cell phones is the electromagnetic radiation they produce. I warned of these dangers on my Today Show interview last month, but the media blacklisted it and only showed a short section

      Do you really want to be available for anyone and everyone on a 24/7 basis? What do I mean? A famous person once said that the more available you make yourself; the more available everyone will expect you to be. People will actually be annoyed if you are not instantly and constantly available rather than being pleased when you do call. People expecting you to be available all the time may be annoying. Cell phone calls follow you everywhere you are including your bathroom. Even during nighttime when you want to rest, cell phones continue to ring and annoy you. If it is important, no problem but if it is very menial, why you need to be bothered so late.Today in this modern society, we live in and the proliferation of cell phones we see people talking anywhere and everywhere. Children Should NOT Use Cell Phones, But My Today Show Interview Does Not Support That
      Swedish researchers found that people who use a cell phone for 10 or more years are twice as likely to develop a certain type of brain tumor, and children under 10 are most at risk.I was really excited when the Today Show contacted me on Monday, asking for an interview about this study, as I thought they were finally starting to accept the truth. Needless to say, I was seriously disappointed when they only aired four seconds of my twenty minute interview.  They completely removed all the science that I carefully explained to them, about why cell phones are dangerous. They edited this crucial information from the piece, and replaced it with innane comments from clueless mothers seeking to justify the use of cell phones.It took twenty years for the first one billion cell phones to be sold -- a milestone reached in 2004.  The next billion took 18 months. The third billion was nine months, and we will reach the fourth billion by the end of this year. We a

But it was just a matter a time that I realized that there was a dearth of legal retail outlets for handsets. Low Minute Users Save With Prepaid Cell Phones
      The Happy Rockette and I got our first cell phone a little under two years ago. We held out for a long time, because we didn’t want a monthly bill for something that wasn’t a necessity. Yes, I did say it wasn’t a necessity, and it still isn’t for most people. We all survived without cell phones ten years ago, but that is another story. We got only one phone and the cheapest plan, 300 minutes for $33 a month through Verizon. Recently our battery died on our phone and that got me looking over our usage and contract. I wanted to see  through we had made a wise choice, and in hindsight we hadn’t. We use on average about 80 minutes a month, which with our current plan works out to about 47 cents a minute. Ouch! Even the expensive pre paid plans are cheaper than that. With our usage being so low I researched prepaid plans, and was quite encouraged. Last time I briefly looked into getting a pre paid cell phone for myself it was ludicrously expensive. It was obvious tha

With BTIS (lunched last June), real-time traffic information is generated from the cell phone tower logs of Airtel's city-wide network, and made available to commuters to see live congestion hotspots, find directions and plan their travel routes. The entire information system is available through SMS to Airtel customers using a shortcode and to others by dialing a ten-digit number.
