Cebu Pacific has ordered four more turbo-prop ATR 72-500 aircraft that will be used for smaller airports, such as Caticlan (Boracay), bringing to ten its total firm orders worth more than USD178 million. Lance Gokongwei, Cebu Pacific President, said the additional aircraft will allow the airline to serve more cities whose runways are too short for its Airbus fleet. "This is a huge confidence vote for the Philippines, for our tourism sector, and our business model as a provider of quality service at affordable fares. It is also a signal to the flying public that our service and the business opportunities we help generate are now at their doorsteps," he said. (more…)

From my inbox: A380 updates, Philippine passport renewal and Cebu Pacific’s latest promo
G’day! I’ve been a bit busy settling this past few days in Melbourne. I know, I know, I’ve been here before so I should know how things work. But I actually haven’t really gone out yet, except for that trip to the market and to the Collingwood Children’s Farm (Wooly sheep! Cows with spots!). My accountant brother-in-law has until October 26 to file their family’s GST and both my sister and I are helping him organize 3 years worth of files. Anywhoo, until my next post (the Gorillapod review), I’ll share with you a couple of messages I got in my inbox today. JustWandering reader BBBB shares that the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) in Clark will be having a viewing of the A380 when it lands on October 12: Good news! DMIA will be holding a public viewing of the aircraft on Friday, October 12 from 12PM to 4PM. So if you’re itching to see this superjumbo in action, head on to Clark, since I don’t think there will be a publ

      What’s next for Cebu Pacific?
There’s no official statement yet, but it seems it came right out of the older Gokonwei’s mouth. A confident John Gokongwei Jr. thinks Cebu Pacific is ready to go long-haul like fellow low-cost carrier Air Asia of Malaysia, with the taipan aiming to cross the Pacific and launch non-stop flights to the United States West Coast, and possibly onwards to Houston and Chicago, by mid-2009. But the taipan is quick to admit that he has yet to fully convince his son and Cebu Pacific president, Lance, about the long-haul dream especially how the attendant cost-escalations would impact on the financial model of a single-class, short-haul, quick turn-around budget airline. Source: Manila Standard Today Hmmmm, I certainly hope they’d get a bigger plane if they’re going to do long-haul flights. Or at least give more legroom. Or have video on demand (even with pay). *cringe* I can’t imagine being comfortable in their current fleet for flights longer than 5 hours. The ar

      Flying with Cebu Pacific
With all the promos Cebu Pacific had last 2006, it’s pretty hard to avoid not booking through them at least once. Their acquisition of brand new Airbus A319’s, enabled them to offer flights to more regional destinations, which in turn gave more Filipinos options for cheap travel both domestically and overseas. I flew with them twice last year: to Cebu and to Bacolod, both originating in Manila. Back then Cebu Pacific was still giving out free bottles of C2 Iced tea. I hear that they’ve stopped giving them out this year (to the dismay of Pinoy travelers who are used to freebies). I wonder if they still have their fun games. (more…
