The regional DENR has also seen the need to stop the illegal collection of wildlife in the caves, particularly bats on Boracay Island. Fuentes said the need to move was urgent, calling on nongovernment organizations and local governments to help. There are about 1,500 caves in the country, 38 percent of which are in Luzon,

      Photographing the Caves of India
The caves of Ajanta and Ellora were both carved, by hand, out of rock near the city of Aurangabad in Maharashtra, India. They're carved in the shape of a horse-shoe and the Waghur stream flows through them. They're believed to have been created sometime between 200 B.C. and 600 A.D. They were rediscovered in 1819 by a British Officer's hunting expedition. Photographing these wondrous landmarks is truly an experience. The 30 Ajanta Caves consist of murals and carvings that depict the life of Buddha and folktales from the Jatakas. Since the Ajanta caves face the East, the best time to visit is in the morning, otherwise the shadows on the faces of the caves make them much too dark to get quality images. The sculptures are impressively well preserved for their age. Pack your camera case with y

Conceived as the secluded enclaves for the Jain and Buddhist ascetics, it contains the megalithic chronicles of the great king Kharavela in Pali, who reigned from 168 till 153 BC. These adjacent caves rise up to 40 meters from the lateritic ground level. There is an 18th century temple dedicated to Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara at the top of Khandagiri. These caves are found in the Tiraque province, some 30 Kms from Villa Tunari. Their climate is warm and extremely humid with and average temperature of 12 to 17° C. They're small and not deep(50 to 150 meters and a height of 30 to 40 metros) which make up a "Sanctuary of wild life” recognized as a protected ecological area.In this caves we can find a certain species of bird (steatornis caripensis) which receives the name of "guácharo" or "lucero". These birds have the singularity of being nocturnal, and because of this their eyes have a flourescent shine, reason for which they're also known as “blind birds”. They eat seeds rich in oils and build their nests in the cave walls, guiding themselves at night using sound echos. It is estimated that in both caverns exists a total population of approximately 2000 birds. It is a specie in danger of extintion.

      Buddhist caves found in Java
27 August 2007 (Jakarta Post) - A story about a remote cave in Java containing a rich set of bas-reliefs depicting Buddha’s journey. This unique cave, believed to be the only one in the world, is dated approximately 800 years old. In this period, much of Java (still part of the Srivijayan empire) was Buddhist. Sadly, there have also been some reports of statues in the caves gone missing. Indonesian caves ring with rare rock music
Deep within an Indonesian mountain, the Stone Age lives on, aurally. For two days a week, the Tabuhan cave in the town of Pacitan, in East Java province, rings with music created using stalagmites and stalactites for instruments in an age-old, and now endangered, tradition. Tabuhan musicians do not follow musical pieces -- the rock music they create comes straight from the heart. "Our music is different from other Javanese music that is made from iron and bronze, because this is stone music and it does not have musical notes," explained Swunarto, who learned cave music from his father and is now one of a few Indonesians who still practise the art. "We play it with feeling," the 50-year-old explained.

      Giant crystals in mexicos caves
Today, I read a cool article in my favorite science magazine "P.M." which is available in Germany, only. It was about the largest known crystals on earth, which can be found in a cave in mexico. The crystals are made of gypsum and the place is not very friendly for lifeforms. At 150 degrees Fahrenheit with 100% humidity a human can't stay more than 2 minutes. People who tried to get into the cave and steal some crystals where found dead and half-baked afterwards. Though of it's high dangers, the crystal caves are considered to be a natural wonder. Pictures of the cave More Pictures and information P.M. Article online
