A Caution About Laser Hair Removal And Pregnancy
Expectant mothers find one that shaving their legs is one of the most awkward tasks they face in the latter stages of their pregnancies. During this time the find it difficult to bend down, and to exacerbate things, the hormonal changes which accompany pregnancy often cause increased hair growth, not only on their legs, but on their abdomens and breasts. Caution: School Crossing Ahead
I have to rehash an old story because it's driving me crazy. And the control freak that lives inside me can't let it go.If you remember, I blogged back a few months ago about David attending Kindergarten. The truth is, we still don't know exactly where.Yes, he's still on the waiting list at local Catholic School. He's also registered at the expensive private school. And, yes, he's also registered for the crappy 2 1/2 hour per day public school.I still am waiting on the Catholic school. The Principal there must think I am completely stir-crazy, as she has received numerous letters from other parents trying to help me out in convincing her to open a spot for my son. This school is the best of both worlds.... full day, reasonably priced. Then there's the private school. After all the visits a

      Use caution at BBQs
It’s that time of year when we enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, steaks and chicken cooked on the family barbecue grill. During these events, many burns and fires will occur. These are mostly due to carelessness or unsafe practices. Here is a list of suggestions from the Nutley Fire Department to help keep your cookout safe and enjoyable.4 For gas fueled grills, follow manufacturer’s instructions for changing bottles, checking hoses and lighting gas jets.4 Always use approved lighter fluid to start charcoals or instead use pre-soaked type charcoal. Never squirt fluid on burning coals.4 Choose an open area away from patio over-hangs, shrubs and house. What I Really Think: #9 - A Caution (With a Geeky Coding Analogy)
A gent named Preston commented on my recent post about church community size, and he really got me thinking. (Thanks, Preston - seriously.) His concern, if I'm reading him correctly, is that he's seen the exact opposite of my claims regarding church community size and rank-and-file participation in ministry. In Preston's experience (again, if I'm hearing him), in smaller churches, the one pastor or clergyperson in charge typically does everything, and opportunities for other folks to get involved are limited. But once a church reaches sufficient size and critical mass to have (and need) a variety of programs, the pastor necessarily needs to delegate authority, and there are many more opportunities for folks to get involved in ministry. And Preston, you're absolutely right. But wait (I

Yes, I felt like a horrible asshole of a parent after the fact, but I could not help it. The monotony was killing me.So what is it that caused such a stir, you ask?Well, it's the bedtime routine. For some reason or another -- I don't know exactly why -- I was assigned the dubious responsibility of getting Zane to sleep each night. In the beginning I really didn't mind. Danger: Recession Ahead, Proceed with Caution
The Dow hit a low for the year on the day before Thanksgiving, down 9% from its 2007 high. The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ are fairing a little better, down 8% from their 2007 highs. (Significantly, all three averages are up for the year, albeit slightly.) The definition of a market correction is a 10% decline. A 20% decline is to be expected if there is a moderate recession or the expectation of one. Are we headed for a recession? Let’s review the economic facts.   Housing, and related, jobs account for 10% of our total employment.  Single family housing starts fell 7.3% in October and permits dropped 6.6%, to the lowest levels in 15 years. (You can see the ripple effect on the earnings of Home Depot and Lowes.) New housing starts have fallen for almost two years. Every time in post-war history housing has declined for two years, it has been accompanied by a recession. On top of this, the value of existing homes is dec

Abuse Reportage. A Case for Caution, Not Inaction
From the point of view of those who would defend their guru figure, far better to react and attack than that their idol - on whom they are so powerfully fixated - be exposed to an unfavourable public estimate. Self-fortifying of Psyches That May Crumble Better it is to attack than for the psyche of the attacker - in which is held the profoundly attached image of the guru -  to be subject to crumbling. Determined attackers tend to lack the quality of empathy. They do of course see their opponents as lacking in this, but even strong opponents can respect each other. In some cases, the one greater acceptance that those obsessively attached to a guru or other idol have had in life is with the cult of which they are a part. It is by no chance that many cult members describe themselves a “the family”. (Many Sai Baba devotees refer to each other as “the Sai family). Apparently there isn’t enough hype over the upcoming Batman flick. Heath Ledgers Joker look isn’t really scaring anyone and the movie has lost hype. Well this is the general consensus of late but a tasty Plot tidbit has leaked, giving this project some necessary gusto. According to Kellvin Chavez at LatinoReview.com his anonymous source has leaked a fundamental plot point for the introduction of The Joker and Batman. “The Dark Knight begins with the Joker robbing a huge bank (we’ve seen photos of this everywhere). The bank is where the mob and all the gangs in Gotham keep all of their money. The Joker takes this money and holds it “ransom”. The Joker then says to the mob and the gangs of Gotham, “If you help me take down Batman, you’ll get your money back. NASCAR Flap Raises Caution Flag for Dems

The reaction on both sides illustrates just how valuable candidates for elected office consider the votes of NASCAR fans who pack grandstands by the thousands every weekend and the donations of business leaders who spend millions to sponsor the sport. It started last month, when an official with the House Committee on Homeland Security suggested that staff aides get immunizations before visiting health facilities at Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway and North Carolina’s Lowe’s Motor Speedway, where the Bank of America 500 was run Saturday. Use With Caution - Cough and Cold Meds Not For Young Ones
There is a growing consensus among the medical community that cough and cold medicine should not be given to young children. According to the Federal Drug Administration (F.D.A.) this sentiment is not new. As far back as 1997, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued warning that cough medicines should not be used for lack of proof of their effectiveness. Since becoming a dad, I notice the FDA and CDC publish annual warnings regarding the use of over-the-counter cough and cold medicines every fall and winter. But looking further into the issue a few other key facts pop off the page as well, like the fact that the cough and cold medicines are a $2 billion industry (which to me translates to the potential of a heavy lobbying influence and impressive advertising efforts) and polls have revealed that over the past four decades there have been 54 reported deaths due to accidental overdosing in children under two years of age. Each year, about three children die from unintentional overdose

It was recently reported in local news that a baby arched his back enough to dislodge him from the Bumbo Baby Sitter he was in while atop a kitchen table and the child toppled backward off the table sustaining a near fatal head injury. The Bumbo has become a very popular first-time seat for babies but if warning labels are disregarded, it can prove to be very dangerous for your child. One of Bumbo biggest advantages is it allows a soft pre-formed back support for babies as young as three months depending on when they can support their head. The suggested age of use is between six weeks and fourteen months. One of the unique aspects of the Bumbo design is the fact that it has no safety straps. The baby is secured but the soft concave cup design of the seat that offers critical back support and keeps the baby snug in the seat. It nearly happened to me again in my last trip to the same city. I don’t think it was intentional. Let me explain in detail… Upon arrival, my colleague went straight to the office with her luggage. On her way back from office to hotel, she shared taxi with 2 other colleagues. Naturally, with or without other passengers, she put her luggage and computer bag in the taxi’s trunk. When they arrived at the hotel, after they paid and got down the cab, before my colleague realized it, the taxi drove away with the bags in the trunk. She chased after him, but failed to capture his attention before he disappeared. The hotel concierge tried to radio him, without avail. She had to make a police report. It was just a formal process, and it rendered no help because she was unable to provide taxi’s registration &m

This difference is pretty small indeed and no one will notice unless you cross check each item and amount carefully. In other words, the displayed price doesn’t get mentioned in the cash bill and you will be paying more than what you thought you will pay for an item. When you buy 10-20 items totaling say a thousand rupee, you may never notice that an item or two were billed 10-20 rupees extra than its listed price. Because there’ll be a big queue of p

Review Suggests Caution on Drugs to Raise 'Good' CholesterolBut a new review of 31 randomized controlled trials published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that so far only modest evidence supports the use of most medications to raise levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) ? good cholesterol. Some are even harmful. The authors concluded that while efforts to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad cholesterol") ?have consistently reduced cardiovascular disease risk HDL-based approaches are much more complex and sometimes disappointing." Vets caution residents after rabies scare
By Elisabeth Kilpatrick Medill Reports - Chicago Avoid contact with wild animals and keep pets current on their rabies vaccinations. That's the advice from state officials in response to the increasing numbers of confirmed rabid bats in Illinois this year. "Because we have infringed upon the wild populations considerably, [pet] exposure is always a possibility," said Cheryl Johnson, supervising veterinarian for Morgan Park Animal Hospital. I choose to see this as a high honor indeed. “The Power of Schmooze” award was created by Mike at Ordinary Folk and Danielle at Pink Reviews to help “recognize those people that were [are] exceptionally adept at creating relationships with other bloggers by making an effort to be part of a conversation, as opposed to monologue.”The rules: If, and only if, you get The Power of Schmooze Award, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think, or have schmoozed you into submission. Warning: PlayStation 3 Distributor Caution
By Joaquin ReveronSupposed distributors of the PlayStation 3 are popping up across the internet. But many of them are very dubious in their origins. Who can you trust, and who should you avoid? One of the golden rules of shopping applies here: if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Treat any distributor claiming to offer advance order of wholesale-priced Playstation 3 with the contempt they deserve, and keep your money well away from them. The PS3 market is a particular minefield. In principle, it sounds as though it makes sense: everybody knows the PlayStation 3 is going to be sold out almost as soon as it arrives, so why not pay in advance to get to the queue?Well, that is how it would work if all the distributors were honest. But some have been offering orders that are not worth the investment they are written on. They have been selling advance promises of delivery that are not been guaranteed by Sony. Lust, Caution Poster
(click for a large version) Focus Features has just released this new poster for Ang Lee’s Lust, Caution, and I think it’s a thing of beauty. Very creative positioning of the actors and use of shadows. And I love how the title was rendered as if it was just another shadow being projected on the wall. The whole poster also conveys well the idea behind the title. There is obviously some attraction between the two main characters. But there is also danger in their interaction, and things keeping them apart. Perhaps dangerous things, which force them to hide their true feelings in the shadows? The title itself stands between the two characters, acting as a visual barrier, probably representing more concrete barriers that are to be found in the story. Certainly much more interesting than a typical poster for a character driven drama. And a very clever visualization of the movie’s premise and title. I love it. Lust, Caution is currently scheduled to open September 28, in

Use With Caution | Antibacterial Products
According to a recent report, the plethora of antibacterial soaps, cleaners and detergents may be doing us harm in the long-run. These products are designed, of course, to eliminate bacteria that would otherwise inhibit diseases/conditions like tuberculosis, food poisoning, cholera, pneumonia, strep throat and meningitis - to name a few. The old school approach is to use products with soap, bleach, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide in them. Alcohol and hydrogen peroxide eliminate all bacteria in its path while leaving no residue because it simply evaporates. Soaps on the other hand lift, trap and carry away the dirt and bacteria. The newer antibacterial products do a more selective cleaning of a given area while leaving a slight reside behind which is meant have a prophylactic effect on a given surface. But what lab tests are revealing is, there is a potential for the residual bacteria (that is exposed to the antibacterial residue) to mutate to a resistant strain. Think of it in terms of a

      Caution: Tater Tot crossing
Tater tot crossing sign, Roatán, HondurasReaders Jamila and Suzy sent this photo taken on the island of Roatán, Honduras. Can someone tell me if that boy's body is riddled with bullet holes or is that just rust? I don't remember seeing a school zone sign here in La Ceiba or anywhere else in Honduras so I don't know if this is a standard Honduran sign or if it is a special sign used only outside schools for American students. After looking at the larger of the two tater tots*, I'm also not sure if the sign is to keep the chubby American kids safe or is similar to the cattle crossing signs and is posted as a warning to prevent auto damage. ;-) Sorry, sorry, sorry! I couldn't resist. I'm sure that many people spent years and years fighting the bureaucracy to get this school crossing sign posted and I sincerely hope that it is helping to keep the children safe. *Tater tots: For the native Spanish-speakers, tater tots are grated potatoes shaped into little 1 inch balls and fried ,

Caution: Your Neighbor's Drugs Could be up in Your Water
Flushing old medications down the toilet, a step long advised by consumer safety groups as a means of keeping dangerous drugs away from children and pets, is no longer recommended by government agencies and private groups. There is a growing concern that drugs in waterways could pose hazards to fish, plants and possibly humans. While there is no proven cause-and-effect relationship between drug residues and health or environmental harm, common sense and troubling indications, such as the appearance of hermaphroditic fish in some rivers, make keeping water drug-free a sensible precaution.Recent guidelines issued in February by the EPA and other government agencies encourage the following steps:Throw most drugs in the trash after crushing them or dissolving them in water, mixing them with kitty litter, coffee grounds or other unappealing materials, and placing the mixture in a sealed plastic bag.Remove and destroy any prescription labels before throwing away the containers. In some states,

      Caution: Xtreme Playground
Yesterday Crabtot and I went to a local playground training arena for future athletes.Witness the slide – is it a slide or, as another mom put it, a luge? The ostensible slide is at an almost 90-degree angle, mimicking the mountain in the background – apparently the steepest ski slope in the nation, a slope so high that snowmobilers trek here to test their skills annually on this icy ramp…indeed, they come from far and wide to see who can snowmobile up to the top without backflipping. (Remember this word "backflipping." I shall return to it later.)So, the slide: it is also very very narrow, perchance to train the mini-winter Olympians of Crabtown to tuck arms in when luging down the pipe? And did I mention high? It is absurdly high. No wonder Crabtot does not wish to slide down it. I won’t either. It is as steep as the Crabtown health insurance deductible. Too dangerous for any adult. Yet it has been designed expressly for kids. Whaa? But this is Crabtown, a locale busting with

A Note Of Caution: I Know Where You Live
Sadly, the £10 note in my wallet is a forgery. I know it’s a forgery because the sociopathic lesbian in Oddbins said so – and she’s never wrong, ever, particularly when it comes to deconstructing my preferred brand of oaky Chilean red. Furthermore, I understand that English currency typically features a portrait of the Queen, and not Leo Sayer. Nevertheless, I’m confident my cab driver doesn’t possess a forensic eye for detail. Sure enough, he drops me at my front door and accepts the note without question. ‘What an idiot,’ I chuckle, stepping inside. About three minutes later, the doorbell rings. http://thecenturiondiaries.wordpress.com/2007/03/13/a-note-of-caution-i-know-where-you-live/   Related EntriesEnglish Breakfast with London cabbies... Today there was a new report that people at average risk for colon cancer should not take aspirin or ibuprofen and similar painkillers to try to prevent the disease because of the risk of developing bleeding and other problems.
