My long time readers know that my father passed away from brain cancer when he was 34. I was only 15 and hadn't seen my father much since my parents divorced when I was 5 years old. He and I reunited a few weeks before he passed away. It was very difficult to be near him when he was in so much pain and suffering.
One night during my visit I was sound asleep in the room next to his when I was

Anxiety can enter anyone's life in a most mysterious manner. Even though it is thought to take hold of those who are normally nervous or high-strung, this is not necessarily true. Anybody can find him or herself inflicted with an anxiety disorder. It may seem logical to think the A-type, or on-edge person will be the most likely candidate for becoming anxiously ill, but in the long run this philos

A Major Cause of Tantrums - Childhood tantrums most commonly result from negative interaction initiated by the parent toward the child. I don't think anyone would disagree with that statement. The difficulty that so many parents have in dealing with this behavior stems from a lack of understanding as to how and why this seemingly mysterious behavior occurs. In some places such as in Minnesota, gas sold must contain 20% ethanol.Ethanol cars have been touted as a more environmentally friendly alternative to cars running on fossil fuels and, indeed, Brazilian cars have been running on ethanol or a mixture of ethanol and other fuel for the past 30 years, using sugar cane waste products as their source of ethanol. Here in the United States, the push for ethanol as an alternative fuel has not just been based on the environment, but also on reducing our dependence on foreign oil. {summary}Shortly after my grandmother died I felt I should do something to raise awareness about heart disease in my family and circle of friends. When my grandmother had her first heart attack back in 2002 I was devastated because up until that point I had never seen her sick - not even a runny nose. Being solid Southern stock, my family just isn’t the sort to pay a hell of a lot of attention to long-term health: as long as a person is healthy in the here and now, that’s all that counted (that’s what made all that fried chicken and fish so easy to swallow).
She was 80 at the time of that first heart attack but I hadn’t up until that point seriously considered her as elderly. She was pretty spry and although she had a “touch of the gout” she was on-th
REMEMBER WHEN POWER LINES CAUSED CANCER? EMF stopped causing cancer in 1997, but no one bothered to tell Jim Motavalli, who wrote an Automobile column in the Sunday New York Times about the risks of EMF in hybrids. According to Motavalli the National Cancer Institute studied the cancer risks associated with electromagnetic fields. And so it did - but it couldn't find any. You might think Motavalli would at least check the Archives of the New York Times. On July 3, 1997, the day the massive four-year NCI study of power lines and cancer appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, Gina Kolata reported in the Times that the study was unambiguous and found no health effects associated with electromagnetic fields. An editorial in the same

Okay, so here I am ready to rant about the latest MSNBC article suggesting that lipglosses can invite skin cancer. My good friend emailed me the link to this article which hit the net about two days ago regarding the link between lip glosses and skin cancer. Apparently some unamed dermatologists suggest that "the slick, shiny nature of the gloss could be making the sun’s UV rays hit harder" (Okay, notice how they said 'could be'!!!). “These lip glosses can make more of the light rays penetrate directly through the skin instead of getting reflected off of the skin’s surface,” says Dr. Christine B

As Karen mentioned in a post earlier this week, we're amping-up our involvement with charity, community, and "for cause" initiatives. This will involve various company efforts, and for many we'll want Posties to get involved as well. To kick-off our "for cause" program, we'll be having a new feature every month called "Blogger with a Cause." Basically, we'll be highlighting a blog/blogger that uses their blog as a platform for raising awareness of a specific cause or need, be it local or global, big or small. This can be a charity, an environmental cause, a disease.... You get the idea. Since today is the first day of May, we decided this would be a great jumping off point. Biofuels give us an idea what we can expect from "reactive environmental campaigns". All in the name of "the global warming crisis", ... According to many environmentalists this has accomplished the following: Helped drive up food prices, contributing to a global crisis; Led to "increased environmental damage," including dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico so polluted by fertilizer runoff that nothing can live; Created "incentives for global deforestation, including in the Amazon basin"; Reduced U.S. oil consumption by 1% while eating up 25% of our corn production. If carbon-induced global warming is "Eco-Reactivist's" primary concern then, more food based biofuels will continue to make it worse by clearing agricultural lan

Vitals.com, a doctor evaluation website listing more than 720,000 active doctors, is looking beyond the season's usual allergy triggers and bringing awareness to a new allergy phenomenon brought on by the prevalent use of modern technology. The increased use of cell phones and other wireless technologies have brought on hotly contested debates with claims that exposure to radiation and microwaves generated by excessive use have negatively impacted those with electromagnetic sensitivity, causing skin rashes, fatigue and headaches. For those already suffering from common allergies, studies also suggest that cell phone use is a trigger, increasing sensitivity to allergens and potentially making typical allergic reactions such as watery eyes or a runny nose worse. What Is The Cause of Allergies?

What is the cause of allergies? Contrary to what you have been told: you are not allergic to pollen, pet dander, or whatever it is that makes your body revolt! Rather, your body just can not handle that one thing, whatever it is anymore, due to the massive barrage of toxic chemicals you and everyone else are ingesting every single day.

The Iraq war is being debated on many different levels. One is the idea that it could be the cause of the U.S. economic recession. Politicians and economists are divided on the subject. Most Democrats, including presidential candidate Barack Obama, claim that the Iraq war has had a substantial effect on the U.S. economy and should be examined as one of the primary reasons for the U.S. recession. Most Republicans quickly dismiss the claim as being without merit, but a growing number of Republican s, including Republican Presidential candidate Ron Paul, strongly oppose the war based on its economic fallout. But is the Iraq war to blame for our economy’s problems? Let’s look at arguments from both sides of the debate:The Iraq War caused the U.S. economic recessionIn a Washington Post arti

Big surprise: "Our Findings Contradict the IPCC" Europe is heating up much faster than climate researchers expected, and now they think they know why: air made dramatically cleaner by anti-pollution programs. With less particle pollution clouding the air, more sunlight is coming through and the continent is getting warmer. The 1970s were a hazy time: Cars ran on sulfur-rich gasoline, power plants and heavy industry burned sulfur-rich coal. Europe lay under a blanket of fumes filled with sulphate particles. Acid rain brought the particles back to earth, ravaging the continent's forests. That was then. The situation today is considerably different. Auto emissions are low in sulfur, power plants only run with smoke filters and acid rain is no longer an issue. But the suc

More and more, it's becoming obvious that the state of the environment and our lifestyles play a major role in health. As people have shifted out of an agricultural lifestyle and moved into office jobs and other indoor work, a lot of new illnesses have appeared. News articles have been written on the effects of mold, "sick buildings", toxins in the materials used in construction that make it more toxic to be indoors than outdoors and also on how lack of sun exposure effects health. This issue is a personal one to me. I'm still in my twenties, but I've had a lot of health problems. At one point I determined I probably wasn't getting enough Vitamin D (i.e. sun exposure), so I made a conscious effort to get at least 15 minutes a day, which is really the bare minimum for pale skin.
