      Catholics split on abortion, voting
Catholic voters supported the pro-choice candidate in the U.S. presidential election despite their church's opposition to abortion, election returns indicate. Exits polls indicate that Catholics backed the Democrat, Barack Obama, by a 9 percent to 11 percent margin over the Republican, John McCain, The Denver Post reported Sunday. By comparison, the general electorate gave Obama a six-point advant

Without reading too much into these new numbers, what is increasingly apparent and more urgent is for the Ummah to reach out to other religions to begin a serious campaign of dialogue to foster tolerance and peace. Given that Muslims now make up 19.2 percent of the world's population comes the responsibility to be more active in finding solutions to deal with the many religious conflicts around the globe. By the same token, Christians and Jews need to recognize their moral responsibility to do a better job of creating goodwill with Muslims. That means that Saudi King Abdullah's proposal for a series of interfaith conferences to include all religions needs to be taken seriously. I guess it is hard for a kid to appreciate the transcendental shift in the universe that occurred when the country selected the son of an Irish Bootlegger, as the Leader of the Free World. There has not been a Catholic president since then, and I wonder if it makes a difference these days. I have never personally experienced any discrimination on account of my religion. While there may be a bit of prejudice in some circles, I don't really think there is any overt discrimination against Catholic laypersons, except maybe in the most Klanish corners of the Old South. Of course, the priesthood has their own problem, and it is as much with Catholics, as it is with every other person who is not a NAMBA supporter. Mr. Woodward writes: "For the rest of the list, Vehige and I part ways. He is a trained student of theology and understandably thinks that every Catholic should read some theology. I'm not so sure." He makes it sound that I expect every Catholic to be rigorously trained as a theologian, and that somehow his own list is more accessible to the general reader. Let's examine this insinuation.First, let's take a look at Woodward's list.1. This Tremendous Lover**2. The Lord**3. The Confessions**4. The Way of Perfection5. Abandonment to Divine Providence6. Journal of a Soul7. The Waters of Siloe8. Theology and Sanity9. Kristen Lavransdatter10. Love and ResponsibilityOf these ten books, the first three -- the one with the double asterisks -- I also recommended. So, excluding those three, here's my list of the last seven books. A reader of this blog (our only one?) asked if Woodward and I would list the 10 or so books/authors we think Catholics should read. I haven't told Woodward about this; he'd then post before I would, and that would make my job all the more difficult.Anyway, in no particular order, here are the 10 authors I think all Catholics should read. (Sorry there aren't any links; don't have that much time.)1. G. K. Chesterton. Given that one of his greatest works, Orthodoxy, will be 100 years old next year, one could ask, "Why Chesterton?" Chesterton has a common sense that's to be admired, a a common sense that took on the modernistic ideas that are still in vogue, a common sense that is desperately needed today. Especially recommended: Orthodoxy, Saint Thomas Aquinas, and The Everlasting Man.2. Eugene Boylan. A chemist, priest, and Cistercian monk, Boylan penned what I think is the greatest spiritual book for the layperson: This Tremendous Lover. It's sane, it's practical, and it s

I'm not sure how to put a price on the sort of suffering caused by these sex offenders who preyed on those entrusted to them, but I am glad to see that victims will receive compensation. Woodward: "Catholics Need Not Apply"
That was the sign that applicants often found on employers' doors during the Irish, Italian, and eastern European immigration booms of the 1800s. Unfortunately, it is the sign that some modernist theologians would like to hang on the doors of the Catholic Church today.“If Protestants became Catholics in the late 1960s or in the '70s and early '80s, it was mainly for family reasons, or because they intended to marry a Catholic.” So intones Fr. Richard McBrien, Crowley-O'Brien Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame, in a recent column, remembering what he apparently thinks of as the good old days.Well, I was a Protestant who became a Catholic in 1972. It was not for family reasons; my conversion broke my Presbyterian parents' hearts. And it was not because I was marrying a Catholic; I had no intention (make that prospects) of getting married to a Catholic or anybody else at the time. It was because I came to regard the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church as the
