It’s happened again. New laboratory tests have detected the pain killer acetaminophen in yet another brand of pet food, ConsumerAffairs.com has learned.
These results add to the growing number of cases in which toxicologists at ExperTox Analytical Laboratories in Texas have detected the over-the-counter pain medicine in dog or cat food.
The latest findings (pdf file) came in a composite of three flavors of Menu Foods’ Special Kitty food — Special Kitty with beef and gravy, Special Kitty mixed grill in gravy, and Special Kitty with turkey & giblets in gravy.
The tests performed by ExperTox earlier this month also detected another toxin in the foods: melamine. That’s the chemical that triggered Menu Foods’ massive recall in March of more than 60 million containers of pet food.

Pakuranga resident Rose Fraser was shocked to find her beloved Tabtab vomiting up bits of blue plastic after she had fed her Jimbo’s cat food.
Last Thursday Mrs Fraser, 70, fed her five cats from a 1kg container of Jimbo’s veal cat food, which she had gone to three supermarkets to find because it had sold out. About half an hour later she heard Tabtab dry-retching outside. She went to see what was wrong with her and she started vomiting up bits of blue plastic.
“I thought, ‘Silly cat, what have you been eating plastic for?’ I had to reach into her mouth and pull a long piece out. I got a shock - it was about an inch long.”
But the next day when Mrs Fraser went to dish up more Jimbo’s to the cats, she noticed bits of plastic strewn throughout it.
“I hadn’t seen them before. I was in a hurry and all the cats were hanging around me.”

I’ve always been against feeding my pets food that looks fancier than what I eat, which I think this free Sheba cat food falls into. I’m lucky if I can find a TV dinner in the back of the freezer that won’t explode in my microwave. Shopping has become a minefield since the local store rearranged their stock. Now breakfast cereals are next to cat food. It’s madness. The packaging is too similar, you can’t tell where cereals end and cat food begins. I live in a panic that I will pour milk over my breakfast one day and discover I’m eating Whiskas.
