As I've said before, I didn't grow up eating a lot of variety of foods or baked goods as a child. I was always so excited to go through the 'cookie and punch' line after concerts in my elementary school because there were so many news bars and cookies to try! Unlike other kids, I skipped the chocolate and chocolate chip 'things' and went straight for the pumpkin bars, carrot cake and other good

Yesterday I was out in the garden taking a look at what was left of the summer harvest. We had a very, very wet season this year and for that reason a lot of things were 'late' in coming up and we didn't have cucumbers until July, the watermelon finally gave 2 tiny melons that rotted soft before they could even ripen and a few things never came up at all.But I still have tomatoes ripening (as lon

I believe that Ethiopian cuisine makes a credible claim to be considered an equal among the world's many diverse and celebrated culinary traditions. Yet many people have never experienced the succulent rich blend of flavors that characterizes Ethiopian cuisine. Even better, Ethiopian cuisine, when prepared at home with methods that conserve on oil, offers a flavorful and interesting set of tastes
I first saw the Yes To Carrots range at Target a few months ago. The quirky names of the products intrigued me, and when Priceline started selling Yes To Carrots products at introductory prices with a 15% discount, I thought I'd give the eye cream and hair mask (which I will review very soon) a go.

Last week I wrote a post about a great opportunity that had been presented to Graham. A big, fat, juicy carrot was dangled in front of us and we just sat there, our mouths gaping open, ready to eat that sucker.

Two of my children are not big veggie fans but luckily both of them are perfectly happy to eat carrots. Ok, so the little lass generally insists on covering her entire meal in thick Bisto gravy (I personally don't like the stuff but she buys it herself) but even with the tastes practically drowned out, the goodness is still there.
Carrots are one of the UK’s most popular
At last the carrots are ready to pull up. They've been happily growing in their pot for a good few months now and we've been itching to taste them. They're very easy to lift from the soil and it's so satisfying to see how large they are as they come up inch by inch. We've grown two varieties - Nantes and Chanteney.
I can't quite believe the smell of them - they're nothing like anything you'd
I finally got to try the frozen yogurt at Forty Carrots Forty Carrots today! Thanks to everyone who recommended it, and reminding me (I need that); I enjoyed it. I asked the counter clerk, what flavors does the frozen yogurt come in? He says, plai

How many times has a mother told her child that if they eat their carrots they will be able to see in the dark? Well, this is not a mother’s tale but is actually true, although eyesight is not the only thing that carrots are good for. At YoNaturals, we know the benefits of snacking [...]
The cultivated carrot as we know it today is a far cry from the wild carrot found growing about 5,000 years ago in the area now known as Afghanistan. These wild varieties were purple or black, and had a tough, fibrous texture, and carrots only became orange in the 1500's when patriotic Dutch growers developed a carrot in an attempt to nationalize the country's favorite vegetable. In 1940 Britain's

After our excellent adventures in Carcassonne chez Patricia and Andre, we were advised to stop by the quaint medieval village of Mirepoix, in the heart of the Cathare region, on our way to Sarlat just a few weeks ago, so off we went. I’d wondered if Mirepoix was where the famous mirepoix culinary method [...]
I came across a great article today that I felt compelled to write about. The piece, Life and Taxes, was written by Yaron Brook for Forbes. First, I would like each reader to stop for a moment and consider all of the impacts taxes have on your day-to-day life and on your financial decisions. The most obvious effect of taxation is the large chunk of income tax withholding that drains cash from each paycheck. Almost certainly you will recall the property tax, sales tax, FICA tax, gas tax, and sin taxes too. What Dr. Brook made me realize is that taxes actually have a much larger impact that just draining away your money. Taxes are a means for the government to control the people. How is that possible you say? By rewarding the behaviors that the gover

Soup is on the menu again, this time inspired by a package of oxtails I found at the local Asian market. My mother made oxtail soup with carrots and cabbage, there was something magical about its taste. I haven't cooked with them in a long time and felt I was due a nice dose of comfort food.
Instead of cabbage I figured I would replace it with chunks of kohlrabi, a root vegetable from the same
This is a favourite of mine and my lady friends. We often have this with a Chinese meal as a side dish of vegetables. It takes about 15 - 20 minutes to cook, and comes from Ken Homs "Top 100 Stir Fry Recipes" book. Recently we started buying regular carrots instead of the organic baby variety that we have loved for many years. I must admit the idea wasn’t mine; it was something I became willing to experiment with after reading this wonderful article from Andrea Dickson over at Wise Bread. The article gives a really interesting history of the baby carrots and than shares her experiences. I won’t share too much, because the article is worth the read.
What I will do is relay our experiences with regular carrots. This is what we have noticed :
Savings. The price is about half the cost of baby carrots.
Taste. Regular carrots taste better.
Texture. I actually find the dry raw qualities of the regular carrot more enjoyable.
Last longer. Instead of getting slimy and gross after only a few days, regular carrots stay dry and crisp for a lot longer. The carrots seems to last even longer if you buy carrots with the leaves still on.

Since Christmas celebrations are in full swing in the Algarve, it’s time to start thinking about what will be on the Christmas table. Things have been a bit busy so I’m getting a late start, but good things are in store. Portuguese enjoy some pretty big feasts at Christmas so, I’ll be sharing some simple dishes and, also trying my hand at some traditional Portuguese Christmas recipes, I’ve loved for years but didn’t have the courage try. Mostly, because I have family members who are masters, so why mess with perfection - but to carry on the tradition, I’ll be putting on an apron and apprenticing…stay tuned, this could get messy!
Portugal is very regionalized and this carries over to the food; with each region having its own traditions and variations of recipes - then there’s the staples that grace every table from north to south. One of these is Conserve de Cenoura, with or without olives.

By ALVIN TAYBetter compensation planning can help achieve marketing goalsSALES compensation in network marketing would seem to be a relatively straightforward proposition: Dangle a few carrots, give the best sales distributors a trip to Bali, stand back and reap the rewards. But according to author of Why You're Dumb, Sick & Broke...And How to Get Smart, Healthy & Rich! (John Wiley & Sons) Randy Gage, it’s much more complicated than that.An appropriately constructed sales compensation programme, says Gage, a marketing guru and distributor with Agel, can help eliminate that most divisive issue for distributors: Why am I receiving what I’m receiving? Moreover, he says, better strategic compensation planning can help achieve strategic marketing goals as well. But it’s seldom used that way, Gage says.“While most companies think they’re paying adequately, 67% of all sales distributors think their current commission system does nothing to drive behaviour,” he says. And

Carrot is a biennial crop. The leaves are feather like with long petioles and they are severally divided into sections. The sheath of the petiole opens at the base. The flowers are white, small and borne in compound terminal umbels. Carrot is propagated by seeds. The thickened fleshy root is the edible portion. The shape, color and size of the root vary according to varieties.

How to Start a Fire Using CarrotsLearn how to start a fire with carrots, strawberries, and other combustible fruits.Steps1. Cut a 2 inch section from a carrot. 2. Slice the carrot into 4-6 lengths. 3. Form a tee-pee shape on a microwaveable dish. 4. Take a 1/8th of a cotton ball and and stretch it over the top of the tee-pee. 5. Put the plate in the microwave on high for 10-15 seconds. 6. The carrots will arc and cause the cotton to catch fire. Tips* If the after 15 seconds the carrots do not catch fire, stop and retry. Make sure the carrots are cold and fresh. If the initial arc (spark) does not ignite the cotton, retry with new carrots and cotton. More time in the microwave will not improve the result. * If unable to form a tee-pee, chopping up the carrots into little pieces works a whole lot better. Warnings* You are playing with fire (albeit a small one). Make sure that you have some baking soda nearby to put the fire out, or even better, a fire extinguisher. Don't burn up mom's
Another year, another round of school recognition money. More than 1,600 Florida schools will get $129.3 million in bonuses based on their school grades, Education Commissioner Jeanine Blomberg announced this afternoon. "It is a pleasure to honor these schools for the superior academic performance and improvement shown by their students last year," she said in a press release. "Through their accomplishments, we can clearly see that hard work, inspirational teaching and a commitment to student achievement are true catalysts for success."
Former Gov. Jeb Bush started the program in 1999, as part of his plan to attach carrots and sticks to school performance. To date, it has doled out $982 million. Schools get an additional $100 per student if they earn A grades or improve a grade. Advisory councils at each school decide how to divvy up the money. Vitamin supplements are the hot topics that are discussed everywhere now. Magazines are filled with news articles about vitamin supplements and their benefits. Newspapers carry information regarding the vitamins and even in the Internet has endless discussions and articles about vitamins. The simple reason is that the vitamins are well, vital. However, there is one important vitamin that we will discuss here that is available in abundance through carrots, beta-carotene and vitamin A.
Vitamin A
This is one of the essential vitamins. Vitamin A and Beta-carotene are typically very easily confused. However, it's easier to remember that beta-carotene is the precursor of vitamin A. Vitamin A plays very important role in the immune system and overall health of a person. It also has antioxidant properties that can help to neutralize the free radicals that cause harm to an otherwise healthy person. These free radicals can lead to heart disease, cataracts, Alzheimer's disease, ma

Growing up in the Mid West as a child I had a regular diet of 'scalloped' vegetables. In the heartland we scallop almost everything; zucchini, corn, potatoes, oysters... even carrots. As much as I poke fun, I have to admit that on a chilly fall evening it sure does hit the spot as a great side dish. Don't scoff... just give it a try!

Sean Penn, one of the most aggressively foolish people in Hollywood went to visit Luke Skywalker of the rebel alliance (to our empire) today in Venezuela (not that he's unpatriotic or anything).
The dumbness of praising Chavez, who is putting the finishing touches on controlling every media outlet in his country, while claiming to be a "reporter" is so profound that one questions whether Penn doesn't live in some kind of Bizarro reality.
For one:
Chavez met privately with the 46-year-old actor for two hours Thursday, praising him as being "brave" for urging Americans to impeach President Bush.
"In the name of the peoples of the world, President Bush, withdraw the troops from Iraq. Enough already with so much genocide," Chavez said before an auditorium packed with his red-clad supporters.
Forget the truth inversion that we're the one's committing genocide in Iraq. What about calling Penn brave? Why is Penn brave for criticizing Bush? Because Bush is going to jail or kill h

One of the best things you can learn to do for yourself is the art of not taking things personally. So often we mistake the intentions, thoughts or words of others to mean the worst and most often they don't mean you any ill thoughts. It's difficult at best to let go and not take things personally. It takes practice, and then more practice and then even more practice. I know people that totally mess up every relationship they have because they take everything personally. He left the bathroom light on because he doesn't care about my feelings. She chose carrots for a vegetable even though I've told her before how much I hate carrots. So she must not care about my feelings. Sound ridiculous? Well it is and yet many many people think this way and most of us do to some extent. For those that have been reading since the beginning you will remember me talking about driving and how we often take the actions of other drivers too personally. That was just one example of how we take things pe

I have a basic litmus test to determine whether a Thai/Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant serves good food. Before sitting down or ordering, I look around for a picture or serving of fried rice. If the fried rice includes peas and carrots, then I leave.
I have no idea whether peas and carrots are an authentic part of East Asian food, and I don’t care. I hate peas and carrots (as a cooked pair, thrown into the mix). To me they stand out like flies in soup - they ruin the dish.
For lunch today I went to Noodle House (the local Thai diner) and ordered Phad Thai like I do 90% of the time I eat there. When the dish was delivered I saw them immediately - brightly colored peas and carrots poking out of an otherwise beautiful mound of noodles and chicken. I dug through the mix and quickly realized that saving this meal with fork flicking was too much labor.
I took the dish back to counter and asked for a new dish, without peas and carrots: explaining that I have ordered this dish dozens

Lately, we’ve been a little behind eating our vegetables. Sometimes it can be a little overwhelming having vegetables delivered to your house every Wednesday, whether you need them or not.
Here’s a little something I dug out of The Greens Cookbook that uses many of the vegetables that we’ve been stockpiling these days.
My main goal was to find a recipe that would use up the large bunch of chard I had sitting in the refrigerator from last week. I grabbed this veggie-centric cookbook and hoped for the best. Apparently some eater already got to this book and marked several recipes with post-it notes, this recipe being one of them. I think the note read something like, “Yummy! I want to eat this!” or something like that.
I quickly read the recipe and found that I had just about everything on hand except for the buckwheat linguine that the recipe suggested. I made the decision to make homemade egg pasta with white flour as a substitute; in the end it all worke
Flaming Carrot The carrot (Daucus carota) is a root vegetable, usually orange or white in color with a woody texture. The edible part of a carrot is a taproot. It is a biennial plant which grows a rosette of leaves in the spring and summer while building up the stout taproot, which stores large amounts of sugars for the plant to flower in the second year. The flowering stem grows to about 1 m tall, with umbels of white flowers.Carrots can be eaten raw, whole, chopped or grated into salads for color, and are also often chopped and cooked in soups and stews. A well known dish is Carrots Julienne. One can also make carrot cake and carrot pudding. The greens are edible as a leaf vegetable, but are rarely eaten. Together with onion and celery, carrots are one of the primary vegetables used in a mirepoix to make various broths.----Yeah right, Wikipedia againCarrots are also believed to be an aphrodisiac.
