      Carling Cup Final Review
On cup final day, the result is more important than the performance. Tottenham Hotspur provided both as they deservedly won their first trophy this century after outplaying CSKA Fulham at Wembley today. While the game wasn’t the most exciting as a spectacle (when are cup finals ever?), a heroic Spurs fightback saw them peg back the holders after going 1-0 down to a Didier Drogba free-kick in the first half. CSKA have not had their full compliment of players for some time. Today saw the return of ‘Fwank’ Lampard (Lumpo’lard?) and John Terry. Add that to the fact the club’s African contingent were all back gave Avram Grant with one of those selection headaches that managers up and down the country would love. The CSKA bench consisted of Joe Cole, Michael Ballack and Alex. The term

Carling Cup Preview: Tottenham – Arsenal ( online stream avail. )
live at yourglobaltv.comIn The Balance North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham go into battle on Wednesday with their semi-final finely poised after the 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Emirates.Tottenham took the lead against Arsene Wenger’s young guns two weeks ago with a Jermaine Jenas goal after 37 minutes, only for Theo Walcott to rescue a draw with a rather lucky equaliser 11 minutes from time with Tottenham looking to hold on for the win. Arsenal would have left the happier of the two sides with Spurs assistant Gus Poyet frustrated not to take a lead into the second leg. "We were the better team. We deserved to win but it's a 180-minute game and there are still 90 to go," he said. Juande Aiming For Cup Glory Although Juande Ramos wasn’t in charge for either this season’s le

Arsenal To Face Tottenham In Carling Cup Semifinals
Arsenal will face North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the semifinals of the Carling Cup for the second season running. The other semifinal will be a tough contest between Everton and Chelsea.Arsenal made it through to the semifinals after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Blackburn Rovers, while Tottenham barely had to fight to defeat Manchester City, despite playing 70 minutes with 10 men after the sending off of Didier Zokora. The Gunners defeated their bitter rivals 5-3 on aggregate last season, drawing the away leg 2-2 before defeating Spurs 3-1 at the Emirates after two extra time goals from Jeremie Aliadiere and Tomas Rosicky. They crashed out of the cup in the finals after losing to Jose Mourinho's Chelsea.Arsenal have already defeated Tottenham once this season, and face them again in only three days. The last Premier League fixture between the two sides was an emphatic Arsenal victory at White Heart Lane. The Gunners were trailing early after a Gareth Bale free kick, but pulled

Blackburn 2 Arsenal 3 (AET) (Carling Cup Q.Final) - Young Guns march on…
First and foremost - what a fantastic result.  Many teams will go to Ewood Park and struggle.  Many will be lucky to go there and get a victory.  Even our first team only got a draw there this season.  Ok, the victory came after extra time but considering our second string have knocked out another full strength Premier League side is magnificent.  Last year it was Tottenham, this year it was Newcastle and now Blackburn.  We rode our luck, but you must expect this with such an inexperienced side, but we also played some sublime football. Each goal was a moment of beauty in itself.  The first came after some neat build up play and Diaby put away Bendtner's inviting cross.  Eduardo then finished off moves ending with two perfect through balls.  I know Samba missed the ball through from Denilson, but the weight and direction was still perfectly into the striker's path.  We did look shaky at the back afte

Blackburn vs Arsenal (Carling Cup Q.final) - A Tricky Tie
So, Blackburn away - never a nice trip to make.  A 1-1 draw this season was far less than we deserved but also more than we have got there in recent visits.  Last season we went out in the FA Cup to a late Benni McCarthy strike after, in my view, Wenger underestimated Blackburn.  He went with an understrengthed side that seemed to lack a cutting edge and we were duly dumped out of the cup.  Tomorrow a similarly understrengthed team will walk out in the freezing cold at Ewood Park.  As we have seen in previous years Wenger has gone with a reserve side in the Carling Cup.  This team has had two brilliant results: a 2-0 victory against a strong Newcastle side and a comprehensive 3-0 win up North at Sheffield United.  These results give me confidence that this side can give Blackburn a real tough game, but will it be enough?  Mark Hughes will go with his first team and it will be a really hard game for the Young Guns to win.  The

      Carling reaches for the stars
This ad from Carling is an absolute gem. As a person who occasionally makes the trundle to a club for a night out with the boys this really appealed to me. I think we've all had the unfortunate experience of reaching your destination for the evening's upcoming festivities, only to discover that one of your mates has failed to meet the dress code requirements – be it collared shirt or smart shoes (I am yet to meet a female friend who has had this problem, but that's a story for another day). This ad highlights the situation in the most fantastic, comical way with a certain “Armageddon” flavour. It is absolutely hilarious while still making one really think about your friends and the relationship you share with them. After viewing it over and over again, I cannot wait to send this beaut off to all my mates. In terms of viral value, the fact that it is so relevant while being so entertaining makes me believe that it's a winner.  Do yourself a favour and tak

The media had claimed that Arsenal's defensive midfielder would not be playing following a bust-up with the Arsenal manager were denied by Wenger."I deny that categorically, and I find this assessment disrespectful to a great professional like Gilberto," said Wenger. "He is 100 per cent professional and is in the squad for tomorrow. He will play."I believe that as a manager and as a player you always have one thing in your mind and that is what is good for the club and the team. I cannot fault Gilberto on that since he arrived here."Recently he has played less, but his mentality has been superb. It is important to win every single competition and in this one I use younger players because traditionally it has always been like that. It has helped us a lot to develop the players."Arsenal's vice-captain, who has been linked with a move away from the Emirates, will be

Carling Cup Fixture Preview-Lassana Diarra, The Player To Watch.
Lassana Diarra was born on March 10, 1985 in Paris, France. He is a French footballer of Malian descent. His predominant position is that of a defensive midfielder and can also play at right back. On August 31, 2007 with minutes left before the transfer window closed Arsenal announced they had reached an agreement with Chelsea for the player. It is rumoured that the fee was £2million. He cited Gunners manager Arsene Wenger as one of the main reasons for joining the club, and the style of football his Arsenal team play. Those who have seen this 22 yr old midfielder/Utility defender who wears the number 8 Shirt will agree that if true, this fee represents a real bargain. Diarra made his Arsenal debut in September, coming on for the closing stages of the Champions League tie with Sevilla. He made his first full start one week later against Newcastle in the Carling Cup and put in a performance that underlined his outstanding qualities. Despite his unwise recent comments in

      - ?He must own nothing but checked shirts!? ponders one fan outside Oxford's Carling Academy, equally decked out in checks herself, before grabbing her friend's hand and disappearing into the squeaky clean new venue. Two things spring to mind when thinking of Mr. Jack Fabian Pe?ate (of Spanish descent if you were wondering) and those are his love and devotion to those shirts and secondly his reputation for unfathomable stage energy. NME has dubbed his dancing as ?unbelievably crazy-ass? and his footwork receives as much attention as the songs he sings. Opening with crowd winner and breakthrough first single ?Spit At Stars?, he bursts into his infamous dance using every part of the stage and the audience love him for it. He is apparently inexhaustible and his set is punctuated with random shakes of the head accompanied by ?AH FUCK!? The ability to hold a tune, a guitar, dance emphatically and connect with the audience is impressive and sets him apart from some of the more image co

Man Utd vs Coventry City 1.920 0:1 1/2 2.000It will be interesting to see how Ferguson will pick his team for this game. Rooney continued his nagging and pleading with Fergie to let him play in this one. He might just oblige and hand Rooney the captain's armband as well. It may only be a Carling Cup 3rd round which traditionally is 4th on Ferguson's priority list but with the kind of players i reckon will be on his 1st team tonight might make this matchup to be a very one-sided affair. The BIG FOUR i picked should all have a good chance to get themselves on the scoresheet tonight. Ian Dowie is going to make a few changes to the backline which is by far shaky in the month of September conceding a total of 9 goals in 4 matches. If Man Utd manage to grab a early goal the floodgates might just open up for them.Take Man Utd at -1 1/2Bet: SGD18.76

Carling Reading and Leeds Festival 2007
Once again another Reading and Leeds festival passes by without my attendance. Ever since I knew what good music was i've wanted to go, but each year it just never seems to happen. But after viewing some of the outstanding performances this year, i'm even more determined to attend. However for now you'll have to do with my review of the festival through watching highlights courtesy of BBC Radio 1. There were SO many great bands at the festival this year, which meant there were many good sets, however the following bands in my opinion gave really inspired performances, who really took things to the next level, and completely owned the stage.LOSTPROPHETS : Since releasing third album "Liberation Transmission", LP have developed a stage presence and sound that has truly taken them above their piers. The standout track was "Burn Burn" which really got the crowd moving. View their set highlights HERE THE HORRORS : I thought The Horrors were excellent. The keyboardist was crazy, his eyes w

Fall Out Boy Had A Drama-Free Set At Carling Weekend, Reading
Fall Out Boy ripped through a drama-free set this evening at Carling Weekend: Reading. They took to the stage at around 5.35pm and opened with their own song Thriller but then later in the set performed a cover of Michael Jackson’s Beat It. They said that people were asking us if we was in anyway nervous about playing at Reading and they answer no because all the people here have always been nice to us. They said that they do not want to be hit with a bottle because that sucks so they brought their friend out on stage and said that he is going to break a real bottle of beer over his head. The band’s pal then appeared on stage and smashed a beer bottle into his forehead, resulting in a bloody nose which dripped as he danced up a storm for the remainder of the set. The band went on to cover Huey Lewis and the Newa’s ‘The Power of Love’ before wrapping up their set with Saturday. What do you think of Fall Out Boy? Do you think that they have good songs? Written

On Sunday, the Carling cup final was played at Cardiff’s Millenium stadium. Contested between Arsenal and Chelsea, to say it was a hard forught and exciting match is somewhat of an understatement. The game started genially enough with both sides playing their normal attractive foortball. In the 16th minute, 17 year old Theo Walcott gave Arsenal the lead by ghosting around Ricardo Carvalho and deftly slotting the ball home. Arsenal’s advantage only lasted 6 minutes though before Chelsea’s on form Didier Drogba snatched a goal after being given the benefit of the doubt and judged onside. To me it did look like offside, with only a defender Manuel Almunia’s leg possibly saving the goal from being disallowed. Jose To WIn Carling Cup Again At 8/15
Chelsea have already won the Carling Cup under Jose Mourinho and they are 8/15 with bet365 to lift the trophy again this Sunday. Their opponents Arsenal are 11/8 with bet365 to win the trophy outright (including extra time and penalties) but, if you think they can get the job done in 90-minutes, a more generous 9/4 is on offer. The draw is available at 21/10. Anhone thinking of backing Arsenal will be encouraged by their performances against the top clubs this season, but the question remains whether their young and inexperienced squad will be able to cope with Chelsea? The Blues have rediscovered their consistency of late which is more than can be said for the Gunners. Their fine FA Cup win against Bolton is in stark contrast to their recent performances against Wigan (outplayed them for over an hour) and Blackburn (frustrated them). Under Jose Mourinho, Chelsea have also had the better of recent meetings between the two clubs with three wins and three draws, so backing them at bet36

PSV and the Carling Cup Final
A very disappointing result on Tuesday night. Many neutrals (and Arsenal fans) saw this as a straight-forward route for Arsenal to place themselves into the Quarter Finals of the Champions League and I was one of them. Unfortunately Mr. Koeman had other ideas and, like the Ajax performances under himself, PSV put in a resolute, defensive display and hit us with a sucker punch with a very good goal. Some of the critics on the many Arsenal blogs that are now present on the web have gone a bit over the top slating the team, however – lets get some perspective here, although our second half performance was very sloppy indeed, all is not lost. Yes, many passes in the second half went astray, yes, we looked a bit toothless up front in the second half and yes it wasn’t a vintage Arsenal performance. But can we truly play that badly again in the second leg? I doubt it. In fact, what this result does do is turn the tie on its head. Arsenal will now have to come racing out of the b

2nd Leg of Carling Cup Preview
The Carling Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur remains finely balanced ahead of the second leg on Wednesday night, live on Sky Sports 1. With their local rivals’ youngsters receiving praise from all quarters following the draw, Tottenham’s senior squad are out to prove a point and keep a potential avenue to European football alive - with Chelsea awaiting the victors in the final. Arsenal’s young guns have produced superb displays to dispose of West Brom, Everton and Liverpool to get to the semi-final, but their Carling Cup talisman Julio Baptista will miss the second leg against Spurs. Man Utd dumped out of Carling Cup
Manchester United have been sensationally dumped out of the Carling Cup by Southend. A Freddy Eastwood free kick put the Essex side ahead. The bottom-placed Championship side then faced sustained pressure from the Premiership leaders. But despite fielding a strong side, including Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, Alex Ferguson's men were unable to reply and went out 1-0. There were joyous scenes in Essex as fans watched their struggling side progress to the quarter finals. Newcastle eased the pressure on Glenn Roeder by beating Watford on penalties. The Magpies led early on through Antoine Sibierski, but Damien Francis put Watford level to force extra time. Watford then went in front through Danny Shittu on 108 minutes. Scott Parker levelled the scores and the Tynesiders progressed 5-4 on penalties. Charlton ended Chesterfield's Carling Cup run with a penalty shoot-out victory following a 3-3 draw.
