By Dave MindemanMichele Bachmann is out with the caribou these days and she continues to hype her "drill here, drill now" solution to America's gasoline price problem. Now, I don't like the idea of drilling in ANWR for environmental reasons, but the complex truth of the matter is that drilling in ANWR is NOT going to have any of the economic impact that Bachmann believes either. More live Caribou in "The Pink Room", as promised. Two amazing songs, "Twins" from Up In Flames (2003) and "Bees" from The Milk Of Human Kindness (2005). See my earlier post of "Sundialing" for a full review of this video series.Enjoy,-T
Another video from the "Live In The Pink Room" series of videos that I stumbled across on YouTube just a few days ago. I find these performances fascinating, I had never seen Caribou perform before or even seen a picture of them. They deliver an incredible performance of material from their last few albums. To be honest I didn't think it was possible to recreate Caribou's complex, lush, extremely
Camber; a testimony to the '60s resort life, booming in it's prime along with the big-hitters of Blackpool, Brighton and Skegness. A city-slicker's retreat for long weekends and pink chests. However, since the decline of the industry (when tourists realised they could hop on a ... read more!

Originally released back in 2001,Start Breaking My Heart is one of those electronic that doesn’t sound quite as fresh as it did five years ago. Back in the day, Dan Snaith was going by the name Manitoba, and even though he couldn’t have foreseen the events that would take place with him getting sued and changing his name, the single line of text inside the liner notes of the CD (saying “Dude, I’m Screwed”) now seems like a bit of foreshadowing. Despite all the hullabaloo, there really wasn’t loads of drama involved with the lawsuit and name switch. Snaith simply chose to go by Caribou instead and went about his business, releasing the awesome ,The Milk Of Human Kindness. Although neither one was difficult to find, another stipulation in the lawsuit was that his older releases couldn’t be reprinted with the old name on them, so plans were made for special reissues of each of his first two albums. Both ,Up In Flames and Start Breaking My Heart have been given similar tre
Once upon a time there was a young lad who went by the name of Manitoba, until he was forced by law to change his name. As Caribou, he's a phoenix reborn from the flames of possible litigation. And like Caribou, his two early albums are born again here - harder, better, faster, stronger. Each deluxe re-issue contains an entire bonus disc of material.
Dan Snaith's Manitoba project is back with a new name but his hypnotic music hasn't changed. Caribou, like Manitoba, is still heavy on electronic jam sessions, with peculiar swirls of sound and stoned instrumental wanderings leading you who-knows-where. The Milk of Human Kindness also has that faint whisp of ‘60s bubblegum pop (see "Bees") and Stereolab-like drone present on Manitoba records like Up In Flames. Such reference points provide welcome toeholds in the midst of all the laptop anarchy, preventing the whole thing from drifting off into the ether. Snaith puts a few other twists on Milk, with mixed success. On the plus side, the sharp opener "Yeti" is a quick burst of fun, while "Lord Leopard" knocks up the beat a notch toward hip-hop territory. The lamentable "A Final Warning," however, falls off the deep end into an almost comedic dead-end. Still, Snaith continues to show off boundless creativity, and when he conjures the right mix of chaos and cohesion like he does on "Br
Sleigh Bells. Multi-tracked, bombastic drums. Gentle falsettos. Flutophone. Flutophone? Just some of what you'll encounter in the first few minutes of Andorra. For those unaware, Andorra is a small country nestled between Spain and France, and Caribou is one Don Snaith, formerly known as Manitoba (he switched names after threat of lawsuit by ex-pro wrestler Richard "Handsome Dick" Manitoba. No joke.). Andorra continues Snaith's trajectory since 2003's Up in Flames, when he shed the IDM and electronic cocoon of his earlier work for the sun-soaked psychedelic maelstrom (and live band) that continues to date. Snaith has found a new level of focus within the confines of his swirling laboratory and the result is an exhausting slab of avant-pop. '60s grab-bag comparisons here are inevitable. "Melody Day" is remarkably like The United States of America in its soft, falsetto melody and freakbeat drums. The Silver Apples robotic bass line pop of "Sandy" gives it a mechanical propulsion that

It's so crazy to me that Daniel V. Snaith is a Ph.D, not that smarties can't make music, but most musicians don't hold doctorates while trippin' on drugs and coming up with band names like "Caribou" with Canadian roots living in London...yea that's right. The talent has remained the same, but the Manitoba almost get sued Caribou has progressed in sound, atleast since when I first heard "Start Breaking My Heart" in '01 under the Manitoba OG name. There's a special Caribou Tour CD being sold only at shows. It contains a mix that's over a half hour and includes 6 exclusive tracks! Luckily for you Caribou is touring, infact there's a show at the Troubador this Friday for all you locals. Site | MySpace | Wikipédia | Last.fm
Can anyone tell me why Dan Snaith's music has always seemed to get lumped into the folk-tronica genre? The man behind the Caribou moniker is an amazing producer and even though much of what he creates is sampled, chopped, and tweaked, it doesn't (and really didn't ever) strike me as truly "electronic" music, but whatever. His latest album Andorra is simply amazing. Andorra is awash in a psychedelic haze that can easily (and without chemical help) transport its listeners to another world. Its densely layered symphonic soundscapes are the aural equivalents of the grandest spectacles mankind has ever seen. The most accurate of those that comes to mind is that of a star-birthing space nebula. If you've ever seen a picture of one of these interstellar clouds of dust, gas and plasma you'd know what I'm talking about. And much like those nebulas, Andorra is a nebulous and mesmerizing combination of layered polyrhythmic percussion, fluttering woodwind instruments, swirling synths
I recently wrote a piece on 12 Easy Ways Anyone Can Support Fair Trade and from the research on this article at TransFair USA, this lead me to search the various certified fair trade retailers listed on their site. I was surprised by some of the companies listed, such as Caribou Coffee.
Their RainForest Blend coffee is certified fair trade and is also certified organic. I have not been to Caribou Coffee in a long while, but use to go alot back when i had one near me. I didn’t know i was drinking fair trade coffee. This is great news as Caribou is quite popular and is located in many many towns. I just wonder if this well known or not? In any account to read more on the sourcing of coffee over at Caribou, visit here.
Any Caribou Coffee drinkers read Keetsa? Did you know that their coffee is fair trade and organic?
UPDATE: According to their website, they now have a rotating fair trade blend.

It has been alot of fun digesting the new album from Caribou the past couple weeks (who you may remember was formerly known as Manitoba). The new album, Andorra is a melodic and definite grower for me. The first song was easy to dive into, and is still probably my favorite from the album, but Dan Snaith, the man behind Caribou, also has some other excellent tunes scattered througout this album.
In addition, there is a very cool collaboration with Jeremy Greenspan of the Junior Boys on the song “She’s The One”, which continues a strong relationship Snaith has with JB. He worked with them, doing a remix on the The High Come Down EP in February 2004. And they have also shared many stages together on tour.
Enjoy this song from the new album and get ready for the full length to drop on August 21st from the fine folks at Merge Records.

Costa Rica Sombra del Poro has flavors of semi-sweet chocolate and black cherries and a bold creamy texture reminiscent of a fine burgundy wine. These beans grow under the beautiful flower-laden branches of poro trees in central Costa Rica. Under the “sombra del poro” (shade of the poro) the coffee cherries develop more slowly, allowing the fruity flavors of the bean to intensify.

This east-African country produces some of the best coffee in the world. Caribou carries only the extraordinary AA grade, which is the largest, densest, and most intense bean available. They’ve concluded, after tasting thousands of samples, that Kenya AA is always superior to the best Kenya AB. Due to the numerous small lots that we buy, each month brings a different treat. All of their Kenya AA has a sparkling brightness and a huge velvety body that serves as a backdrop for wonderful blackberry notes.
