Joe Ledley scored the only goal to end Barnsley's FA Cup run and send Cardiff through to a final against Portsmouth.HighlightsLedley volleyed them in front inside nine minutes after Barnsley failed to deal with a Tony Capaldi long throw. The Tykes responded well but had keeper Luke Steele to thank for denying Trevor Sinclair from close range.Steele also kept out a Gavin Rae header but Kayode Odejayi missed a glorious chance to level when he was put clean through on goal only to shoot wide.It was by no means a Cup classic between two unlikely semi-final opponents from the Championship, but the early goal paved the way for a lively encounter. But as with Saturday's opening semi-final at Wembley, one goal was enough to decide the game. 606: DEBATEJust like to say well done to all associated wit

Gig Review - Blood Red Shoes (at Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff)
I recently saw Blood Red Shoes in Cardiff at Clwb Ifor Bach. So here's a little review...First band up were She Set Sail, a local South Wales alternative rock band from Cardiff. The band comprises of Lee Smith (Bass), Jonny Payne (Guitar/Vocals), and Sam Vanttinen Newton (Drums). I was pretty impressed with these guys display, as it looked as if this was the first time they have played on such a stage, and they did well. With each song the band clearly grew in confidence, particuarly frontman Jonny Payne who seems a real talent. I think She Set Sail definatley have some potential, and the more gigs they play will only help to further this. She Set SailNext up from Nottingham were noisy punk rockers, Lovvers. The band features Shaun Hencher (vocals) who was previously in The Murder Of Rosa

      Cardiff Review
by Sarah-Louise White Western Mail I went to this gig not as a huge fan of Maroon 5 and I didn’t have any preconceived expectations. But as soon as Adam Levine arrived on stage, delighting the female fans in the audience, I knew it was going to be a bit more special than I anticipated. Their set was well rehearsed and played with such slickness and supreme sound quality. Levine’s live vocal performance was outstanding. He showed off his excellent vocal range, always reaching the right pitch – reminiscent at times of Jay Kay of Jamiroquai and Justin Timberlake – while he showed off versatility through his guitar playing and a short stint on percussion. In fact, the band as a whole proved that they were far more than just competent musicians. They played all their hits, which were very much appreciated by the diverse crowd at the CIA on Monday night. The highlights of the lengthy set were arguably Wake Up Call, Sunday Morning, I Won’t Go Home Without You, She Will Be Loved and

In Defense of Cardiff, Wales: It’s Not That Boring!
“Why are you going there?!” was the question I kept getting asked. “Because!” was my weak response. Apparently, people saw Cardiff as a waste of time. The common song was that there is nothing to do there besides a visit to the castle, which compared to other European castles … ummm … seemed to validate their argument. Ever since my sister and her hubby visited over a year ago, I’d been itching to go check it out myself. “But why?!” she asks. I roll my eyes nonchalantly. I refuse to believe it is that mundane. It’s been about 3 days now, and my therapist reckons it would be good for me to talk about it. So… Australia lost. New Zealand lost. Nations are in mourning. Glad I got that off my chest. Admittedly, I think Australia’s loss to England was understandable, based as it was on the best performance that the English forward pack has produced in about 4 years. But the New Zealand loss was a bit harder to take, given that there was a blatant forward pass in the lead up to the last French try, which was missed by the ref and both touch judges — but not by the 40,000 Kiwis sitting in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff! Is it an IRB conspiracy, to ensure that the Host Nation made it to the finals in Paris in a couple of weeks time?? Only the ref will ever know, but I don&rsqu

Barbarians vs. New Zealand Allblacks (1973) at Cardiff Arms Park
There are a lot of things to note about this video. I've only watched the first 20 minutes so far. I didn't realize the greatest try was scored so early on in this match (within the first 5 minutes). I also like some of the period features of rugby 24 years ago: the immediate engagement at the scrums; the condensed, unlifting lineouts with wingers throwing in (with a particularly odd overarm bowling style from the Kiwi no. 14); the under-rehearsed Haka (hardly as fearsome as it is today); the generally effeminate, schoolmasterish look of most of the players and the referee (these are amateur athletes); the heavy ball; the good sportsmanship. A real treat.

      Arsenal 3-2 Cardiff
A quick? report on the FA Youth Cup which was played Monday night. It was a fantastic night, 11,610 people turned up to watch the U-18s which meant that the kick off had to be delayed by 15 minutes.  Steve Bould said that although it’s fabulous to see a crowd of that size, he didn’t dare tell the team why because he didn’t want them to panic. It was a very competitive match and Cardiff themselves have some very talented players.  But Arsenal always looked the most likely to win.  It was lovely to see the crop of players that we have - all play the same flowing style as the first team and I’m sure quite a number of the youth team will make it into the Arsenal first team in years to come.  Jay Simpson scored a hat-trick and everyone I spoke to agreed that he reminds them of Baptista.  He wears the number 9 shirt and is already a very strong player. Simpson scored the first goal, but Cardiff replied immediately through

      Alex at Wembley... or Cardiff?
Yesterday I foolishly described our Johnstone's Paint Trophy victory over Port Vale to a mate at work. He's not a footy fan. Suffice to say he took the piss. "Johnstone's Paint," he said, "you mean a bit like watching paint dry?" Yeah, whatever. I accept that it's not the biggest win in history, that Vale are (this season at least) canon fodder and that Johnstone's is hardly up there with the, er, Autowhatsit Trophy, is it? Still, that chink of light at the end of the often gloomy football tunnel that is a FINAL cannot be dismissed, whatever the occasion or tournament. So, with a northern semi-final on the cards the Alex are just three games away from a Cardiff (or is it Wembley) final. For the non-footy readers, we'll play the semi in early January (away at Chesterfield), then a two-led northern final in February. And so to the grand final in early April at, well, I really don't know. I still believe that it's at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium but, having chatted to my mate Ray
