For all revolutionaries, being able to imagine a future society is very important. This isn't simply because we need to have something to struggle for, but it is important because we have to be able to show that an alternative is possible. If a new form of society does not work on an intellectual level, who will be prepared to join the battle to create it.

Venezuela, along with Argentina, Cuba, Ecuador, Nicaragua and Bolivia, criticised the final declaration of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Summit in Rome on June 5, arguing that the document failed to identify the true causes of rising food prices, such as agricultural subsidies and unequal trade policies imposed by developed countries.Venezuelan ambassador to the FAO, G

Today capitalism's grave diggers stand poised to shovel with a vengeance. Besides the aforementioned food shortages, sky-rocketing fuel and gasoline prices are finally putting a potentially lethal economic bite on the US American middle class, a group of people who have served as the buffers and unwitting foot-soldiers for the malevolent swine comprising the power elite. My friend from Beijing stayed with us a while back. He brought Monopoly--the China edition. I love the irony of the capitalist board game in a communist country. The only difference between the China edition and the regular one is that all the Atlantic City names are changed to Chinese cities. Plus they added a zero to all the prices and money (inflation).Absent from the Chinese cities on the boar

The Role of Speculators in the Global Food Crisis
By Beat Balzli and Frank Hornig
Biofuels and global warming have been blamed for shortages driving up the price of food, and both trends have played their role. The planet’s grain reserves are almost empty for a number of reasons, including global population growth and greater prosperity in [...]
Public Choice Capitalist has a good post up about how economic freedom, mainly capitalism, has essentially tamed the environment so that we can now enjoy it.
Capitalism is also responsible for giving people the wealth and leisure to permit them to mis-perceive nature as loving and bountiful, and to enjoy nature in a way that few [...]
Ok, the environmentalist nutjobs are in full force at the UN. And what’s even more pathetic, is that the leftists in America and Europe would gladly step in-line to this crazy ideological stance on global warming.
Why not? Kill two birds with one stone, right? haha, nice try morons…

The Western world is in an economic crisis similar in scale to the oil shock of 1973. What we are seeing is nothing less than the unravelling of neo-liberalism – the dominant economic and ideological model of the last 30 years. The disintegration of Anglo-Saxon-inspired markets has come about largely because of the confluence of two tendencies of the "free market": speculation and monopoly capitalism. Contrary to received opinion, free markets – unless subject to civil regulation, asset distribution and persistent intervention – always tend to monopoly.Similarly, there is nothing inherently efficient about free markets – they do not of themselves promote sound investment or wise management. Rather, when markets are conceived wholly in terms of price and return, and when asset wealth
The United Nations is truly becoming a worthless organization. Like any bureaucracy, it searches for problems and then discovers new solutions to make the problems worse. The latest crisis the United Nations has discovered is that over 1 Billion people around the world do not have access to clean drinking water.
Let me start by saying that this is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. ...

Jennifer Medina of the New York Times has a story today about New York City Schools paying students for performing well on standardized tests."I'm not saying I know this is going to fix everything," said Roland G. Fryer, the Harvard economist who designed the student incentive program, "but I am saying it's worth trying. What we need to try to do is start that spark."It makes sense since many of the principals and teachers in these schools also receive bonuses for reaching certain marks.
In his recent LRB article, John Lanchester observes that "under Communism children from primary school upwards were taught the principles and practice of the system, and were thoroughly drilled in how it was supposed to work. There is nothing comparable to that in the capitalist world. The City is, in terms of its basic functioning, a far-off country of which we know little." What follows is a brilliantly lucid layman's explanation of what banks are doing with other people's money in the capitalist system, which leads up to an account of how Northern Rock is getting what it deserves: a bank run.John Lanchester, "Cityphilia", London Review of Books, 30.1 (3 January 2008), 9-12; [accessed 14 January 2008].

O.K., here's the scene. You drive up to the gas pumps and start to fill your tank.................(Of course YOU have to do it, when was the last time you saw a full serve gas station?)As your filling the tank a voice beside you suddenly says; "Feeling a bit drained after all the running around you've been doing today? Why not slip into the snack bar and get an energy bar or power drink to get you back on your feet! And remember, we have a sale on milk and bread as well." Or, a TV screen lights up with a nice tropical beach scene and a voice starts telling you, (As you stand in two feet of blowing snow.) that Scare Air has a sale on flights to the Bahama's or Hawaii.Take my word for it bunky, there is nothing better than a captive audience and I can see the time coming when your sitting on the can in your favorite watering hole and there in front of you, hanging from the shitter door, is a LCD screen reminding you that imported beer is half price for the next 15 minutes.Yes kids, ca
We're never ones to discount warnings: Winston Churchill was our hero. However, the warnings of a coming U.S. war with China continue. The warnings about war take, in the main, two forms: military and economic. Zachary Hubbard, a retired Army officer, wrote in August about the possibility of military war. Hubbard now looks at an economic one presaging any military actions. The war on terror grabs headlines, but there are far greater threats to America than terrorism. Conditions are ripe for a shift in the balance of global power, perhaps in the next four to five years. When it occurs, America will no longer be the dominant economic force on the planet. As our economic power wanes, our political and military power will follow suit. The Roman philosopher Seneca said, “If one does not know to which port one is sailing, no wind is favorable.” His wisdom applies to America’s economic situation today.Americans must choose a new economic destination and change course soon or we stand to
Milton Friedman passed away a year ago today. He was a ferocious defend of the American Way.According to Wikipedia's biography:In 1962, in his first major salvo as a public intellectual, Friedman published "Capitalism and Freedom", a major defense of capitalism and critique of the New Deal and the emerging welfare state. The book would eventually sell half a million copies.Friedman served as an economic adviser to Barry Goldwater during his failed 1964 presidential campaign. Like Friedman, Goldwater had come to reject the New Deal and called for a return to economic freedom. This position was extreme in 1964, but gained momentum over the next two decades, finally culminating in the presidency of Ronald Reagan. Friedman's contributions to the defense of our capitalistic system were many. Don't really understand economics? It's all a bunch of mumbo-jumbo? Watch a great video of Friedman explaining why capitalism is better than any other system, go on over to Red Planet Cartoons. The fi

I really appreciate how they attempt to break the myth and improper stereotypes of the greedy businessman. In a recent post, they discuss the profit motive:
The wide-standing perception is that business is primarily about maximizing profits. However, the true purpose of business is to provide a vehicle for serving others through efficient delivery of useful goods and services. When this objective is pursued, there will be an opportunity for profit. Profit is like oxygen—it allows a company to grow and continue to serve others effectively. Another prevailing notion is that nonprofit organizations are inherently nobler than for-profit organizations. But there is no direc
In THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America’s “free market” policies have come to dominate the world-- through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries. At the most chaotic juncture in Iraq’s civil war, a new law is unveiled that would allow Shell and BP to claim the country’s vast oil reserves…. Immediately following September 11, the Bush Administration quietly out-sources the running of the “War on Terror” to Halliburton and Blackwater…. Could this be the end for China? For the sixth time this year China has had to strangle its credit in order to try and slow down its economy, yes, slow it down. The Chinese economy is running at such a pace that not even the government is able to keep up anymore. China is doing everything it can to stop the economic growth it is experiencing, but nothing is working.
Beijing interest rates are up, bond sales are up, and billions are being drained out of the Chinese economy each month, and even with all this the national GDP has grown 12% last quarter making it the fastest growing quarterly GDP in 12 years. Chinese government has even began to put new taxes on everyday products such as steal but it just is not working, the capitalistic mindset is taking over red China. Chinese banks are taking in tens of billions dollars a month leading to, you guessed it, investment.

Guess who said that..Â
Chavez launches biting US attackÂ
Â
The President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, on a tour of Latin America, has launched a stinging attack on the US.
Visiting Bolivia, the firebrand leftist leader said that capitalism was “the road to hell”.
Mr Chavez underlined the billions of dollars of aid Venezuela is ploughing into Bolivia’s economy at a time when the US is reducing its contributions.
Yep, that was everyone’s favorite little south American dictator .. and he followed that little gem with.. “And those of us who want to build heaven here on earth, we will follow socialism,”.
This quote was found in an article from a British newspaper where the writer refers to Chavez as a ‘little firebrand’. Oh look, it’s love (watch out Cindy, you have competition).Â
After reading the article I am left to wonder if Great Britain has re-written their history so much that they don’t remember just who was attempting
At it’s very foundation, Capitalism works because of people’s selfishness. Adam Smith the Father of the modern capitalist economy said,
It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker, that we can expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest.
I’ll begin, for the sake of Virgil, by saying that in practice in our society, I have not seen or know of a better system then capitalism. I’ve thought that there is a chance a different governmental or economic system would better serve society, but I’m not sure, nor do I know enough to argue, that it would. That being said, Capitalism still has it’s downsides.
We often make choices and contribute to systems that we believe in and agree with. There are personal and moral reasons people boycott stores, flee countries, choose not to vote, refuse to pay taxes, or live off the grid. It’s a much more daunting task, but I wonder if we should not at least consider the
I want to correct the common misconception about Objectivism’s support of laissez-faire capitalism. Basically Ayn Rand said that businesses should be free to do what they please and individual rights should be protected by the government. This means that businesses would be unregulated BUT held responsible if they violated any individual rights in the course of doing business. I hate it when people discredit Objectivism solely on its support of laissez-faire capitalism, because there is more to it than just support of the classic amoral laissez-faire capitalism. In the Objectivist philosophy there is still protection from harmful business activity with a lack of regulation. Objectivism assumes businesses will not violate individual rights, but holds businesses responsible if they do, without any preemptive regulation. Integrate a protection of individual rights to the capitalist equation and laissez-faire capitalism works perfectly.
I’m going to be going on vacation soon, so this blog may be neglected unless I have something urgent to relay to the masses. So, have a great Capitalism Day and be sure to treat yourself as much or more than you treat your loved ones.
Government is essential to protect our individual rights. The United States was founded on this idea, but our amendable constitution has made it possible for the socialists and the religious to pervert the meaning of freedom. Just take a look at liberals who scream about freedom of speech but are so willing to stomp on property rights. Look at conservatives who scream about property rights but are so willing to stomp on freedom of speech. Our founding fathers had the right idea, but they did not define our individual rights clearly enough to protect them in the long run. Now we fight the battle every year with new initiatives, taxes, politicians and laws. Constitutional amendments are the bain of democracy, but that does not mean we should go without government. The result of giving up the government altogether means giving up the protection of individual rights. Gang warfare is the result of any pro anarchy philosophy, because all it takes is someone with a bad philosophy and
The world sat up and listened when the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), in its report released last week in Paris, said that climate change was real and man-made. The first report said that temperatures in the next century are expected to go up by 2.5 to 4.5 degrees Centigrade. What does this exactly translate for India? Most figures add up to a serious shortage of water and threat to food security. It just might be the wake up call that policy-makers in India need. - Indian Express, 12 February 2007
