Islay Canoe Club Beach Clean at Ardtalla
After their first beach clean at Proaig in February the Islay canoe club achieved a second beach clean last Sunday, this time the beach location was Ardtalla on Islay's east coast. Eight paddlers started from Claggan Bay whilst four others made the short walk to help the clean up operation. The conditions were as perfect as you could expect for Islay at this time of year which made the job a whole lot easier and by the end of the day over 400 Kg of waste was collected which made the journey back to Claggan in several trips in the open canoe (as per picture) which was paddled by canoe club member Stephen Harrison. The second picture shows an immaculate Ardtalla beach afterwards and for those that were there had stunning views of a snow capped Goat Fell on Arran and looking North of the snow

up the creek canal without a canoe
The intriguing story about the missing fifty-something year old canoeist who returned after five years with an apparent memory lapse continues to unfold (unravel) with a fair amount of speed. Allegedly, John (the canoeist) originally re-appeared on his wife's doorstep after only one year away and then took up living back at home as well as in a next door bedsit - wait for it - with a secret door in the wardrobe back to the main house. Somehow this was kept from his son, family and friends.Apparently, along the way, the major debts he had created were resolved (presumably from life assurance) and more recently a planned move of his wife (and then him) to Panama took place. Then in the last few days the famous detective work where someone typed "John Anne Panama" into Google and immediately found a picture of them together on the relocation website as a publicity shot. My almost Wordless Wednesday post featured this and I was slightly surprised at the number of non sticky hits based on

      Islay Canoe Club
Last week I sent Dave Proterough an email about the Islay Canoe Club. Reason was the fact that there was little information available online. Dave was kind enough to supply me with enough information and pictures to create a special webpage for the Islay Canoe Club. The page is now online and explains what the Canoe Club and canoeing is all about. Dave also told me that they will get a new website soon and he will keep me up to date on the progress. I will post something here as soon as the new site comes online. As a follow up on the new page I thought it would be interesting to post an article published in the Ileach about the club's invitation weekend last September: The Canoe Club’s annual invitation weekend was held on 28th to 30th September. The invitation goes out to friends, acquaintances and anyone else who may wish to make the trip from the mainland. It was gratifying to hear the island being praised by the visitors for its natural beauty and the quality and variety of wate

      J Stroke Paddle Canoe Technique
Watch the placement of the paddle and the body movements carefully.Notice I said body and not arm ? There is a reason why.The Basics of the Forward Stroke The first thing to know about efficient canoe paddling is that the most powerful muscles in the upper body are in the back and shoulders. The muscles of the arm such as the biceps and triceps are best used in a supporting role, not as the major movers. The arm muscles will tire long before the big muscles of the back.
