A minor rant here, but an important UI one. How many times have we as end users accidentally clicked on cancel when intending to click on submit? I know I have done it a few times this month alone on one specific web application. Just did it AGAIN. groan. I know better. I really do. I know the difference between submit and cancel. I am painfully aware of what happens when I click on the wrong thing. And yet I am also always in a hurry. I often make mistakes clicking on a nearby link/button/etc.
The problem is that the submit and cancel buttons are right next to each other. No whitespace, no padding, nothing. So if your in a hurry (entering time sheet at the end of the day) it is very easy to click near a button and accidentally click on the other one instead.

If you are anything like me then you wait a minimum… a MINIMUM… of six months before installing a Microsoft operating system on any computer that you personally own and operate. I personally shoot for one year. The problem is I really like the looks of Windows Vista much more than the oh so goofy default Windows XP look and feel. A while back I ran across an online tutorial that detailed how to skin your Windows XP desktop to look just like Vista. That sounded like my cup of tea so I gave it a whirl. I ran into a few hiccups during the process, so I decided that I would repackage the tutorial along with some of my observations and edits. I heard this morning on Leo Laporte’s Windows Weekly podcast that there are issues with Windows One Care. An attempt by Microsoft to provide some kind of security software that I have paid for. More fool me.
Currently on my Vista PC when it’s started One Care pops up and tells me it has amended my security settings as I am no longer connected to a network. This is the peer-to-peer network that I tried to get Vista to connect to and which resolutely fails. Obviously Vista thinks it was connected to the network or maybe even has nearly connected to the network. If the Vista pc hasn’t been turned on for a couple of weeks then One Care worryingly has reduced its perceived security level, to orange from green, as it finds that the virus checking files are a bit old and possibly out of date. So you get a nag window for that.
On my laptop which is also running Vista and doesn’t get switched on from one week to the next One Care, on start up, usually loses its own spywa

A Nevada Democratic presidential debate that was to have been co-hosted by Fox News Network was canceled by organizers, in part because of a joke by Fox Chairman and CEO Roger Ailes about presidential contender Sen. Barack Obama.
Democrats canceled the debate Friday. They said a comment by Ailes during a Thursday night speech to a group of radio and television news directors indicated the network was biased against their party.

This isn't a perfect solution and won't always work, but it is definitely worth trying if you suddenly remember you have to do one last thing before you shut down.
