Canadians Can Save Now In Euros To diversify my portfolio, I allocate one to two percent cash in foreign currencies. Up until recently, the American dollar was the only currency I could keep in a Canadian bank offered U.S. dollar account. But now there are more options to diversify. For the first time in Canada, you can deposit and withdraw Euros at your local branch, and Scotiabank

The “smart fortwo” car has been available in Canada for four years, but despite soaring fuel prices and the push to conserve, the tiny two-seater is still a relatively rare sight. It’s one of the smallest and most fuel-efficient cars on the road at a time when North American automakers are struggling because of slumping demand for large vehicles, but some still question whether t

Canadians get shit for a number of reasons, maybe that’s what leads them to drinking so much alcohol or it could just be that there isn’t much else to do when it’s cold as fuck outside 10 months of the year.

The Harper government has sunk to a new low. Now, since he has taken office, Harper and his goons have been fairly vanilla as world leaders go. A new study suggests that Canadians may be in support of a “carbon tax” on activities that cause climate change. The McAllister Opinion Research survey, commissioned for the Pembina Institute, revealed that Canadians would not expect such a tax to offset current taxes and would, instead, prefer that the revenue be used to improve [...]
Canadian snowbirds are known to travel long distances in search of warmer climes, but in the past the expense of getting to Hawaii and the high cost of its real estate had deterred both tourism and property purchases. Now, Canada's strong oil economy and robust real estate appreciation has increased its citizens's discretionary income. And, while Canadians still view Hawaii as a faraway locale, the
I’ve been telling my clients who are interested in purchasing, that THIS is the best time to invest in your home because of the downturn in the market. It seems that Canadians pretty much are got used to high gas prices by now. Americans have been scared by the gas prices steadily climbing towards $4 per gallon, with the country average having passed the $3.75 mark for the regular gas lately. Meanwhile, Canadians are already paying over $4.60 per gallon, in part thanks to Canada's federal and provincial governments which have been silently
I was shopping with my wife today at Yorkdale Mall in Toronto and, oh boy, I must tell you that Canadians are still very much into shopping, despite all economic worries and troubles with the big southern neighbor. It could be the fact that it was rainy today and there were not too many other things to do for many people, or maybe because it was the middle of the long weekend, but the big mall

The geographically mixed-up band known as Canadians are at it all over again. At least they were last year when their full-length debut ‘A Sky With No Stars’ came forth bearing plenty of indie rock kicks. I found this pretty surprising. Americans applying for Canadian tax money to make TV or films are not subject to the Minister’s censor hammer (should Bill C-10 pass). When younger generation is going crazy for cars across the world, younger Canadians have taken the world by storm discarding cars in their daily routine life. Today, it’s habit among many youngsters to take their small car, luxury car or SUVs for marketing, offices and even to the places which are too nearby. In contrast to this, younger Canadians are going green by avoiding cars for little distance places. About 60 per cent of youngsters in Canada who own cars will walk, cycling or take public transport to reach their offices, markets or other little distance places. They are joining hands with Canadian government in its endeavor to protect environment from increasing pollution by sacrificing their personal comfort. Even most of the cars owned by them are environmentally- friendly car

The U.S. financial sector has been rocked by subprime mortgages, which essentially provided a way into real estate for people who wouldn't qualify for conventional mortgages. But Turner told CTV.ca the real story is that housing prices in the U.S. got more expensive than Americans could afford. In Canada, real estate prices have essentially doubled in five years. Turner said he didn't think that was a "reasonable" increase.Over that period, household incomes have stayed essentially flat, he added.

A recent article claims to have uncovered proof that Canadian baby-boomers prefer watching television to having sex. The study, which targeted adults between the ages of 40 and 64, indicates that while most participants reported spending an average of 15 minutes a day on sex and romance, they reported spending as much as five hours a day watching TV or surfing the Internet.
Freaky Canadians… only five hours a day watching TV or surfing the Net? Pah-leez! We, Americans, watch five hours of America’s Next Top Model and related coverage every day. And what about Idol? RBC Insurance is reminding Canadians to think about travel insurance, even for last-minute, short getaways across the border.
With the rising dollar, some Canadians will be heading south this American Thanksgiving weekend looking for deals as the holiday shopping season begins.
But that cross-border trip could end up costing more than planned if medical treatment is needed while away from home, RBC Insurance says.
“Unfortunately, accidents can happen at any time, so don't let a shopping trip end up costing you more than you bargained for,” says Stan Seggie, president and CEO of the travel insurance division of RBC Insurance. “For less than $25, you can purchase travel insurance for up to four days, to protect against unexpected emergencies that may happen when you go across the border,” addsSeggie.

Never missing an opportunity to use the “torture card” to gain sympathy, Taliban members captured by Canadian troops and handed over to Afghan authorities say they have been tortured. (NO! Say it isn’t so!!!)
Three prisoners are claiming they were beaten with bricks and cables, given electric shocks, deprived of sleep and had their nails torn out.
The three said they had been captured by Canadian troops, given a document that said torture was no longer used in Afghanistan and then transferred to the Afghan secret police.
“The people from the secret service tore it (the document) up and threw it in my face. They tortured me for 20 hours. I protested and said the Canadians had promised that nothing would happen to me.”
“They replied: ‘We’re not in Canada, we’re at home. The Canadians are dogs!’” he said.
I know this is the time when we’re supposed to get misty eyed, demand answers, and condemn torture. But I’m
A special tip for our Canadian readers:
The exchange rate recently tipped in your favour, so your money goes further when you’re buying American products.
That means hopping the border can get you some great deals — especially since U.S. stores are trying to lure Canadians:
“Some of the prices that are showing up in the malls close to the border in the U.S., […] are lower there than they would be for example in Chicago, in New York, in any large city.”

If you’re too far from the border to drive across, you can still get a great deal from one of the many U.S. shopping sites that ship to Canada — like Amazon, Apple Bottoms, Baby Phat, BuyBeauty, dELiA*s, figleaves, ICE.com, Shoebuy, shopbop and UncommonGoods.
Happy shopping, Canadians!

It is an emergency hospital & medical insurance policy, administered by TIC Travel Insurance Coordinators Ltd.
Let me give you some information about this coverage.
1) Why do I need travel Insurance?
In Canada, government health insurance plans will pay only a small fraction of expenses if you are sick or injured while outside Canada, say $30/day. Some hospitals charge thousands of dollars a day, not including doctors' fees or diagnostic services. Without emergency hospital and medical insurance, you and your family would be responsible for these high costs, which can create a significant financial burden. It is true.
Other mishaps like replacing lost or stolen baggage, or buying a one-way ticket because of a missed return flight, can ruin your holiday or business trip.
2) What is not covered?
Travel insurance does not cover everything. Of course.
3) I travel a lot. Can I get a better deal?
Multi-trip plans provide frequent travellers with the convenience of not having to purcha

Prices are sticky downwards - we all know it. Now Canada can witness it at its finest. Sure the Canadian and American dollars are near parity on the markets, but not at the retail cash registers. You will still find your self paying less for the same product in the United States or elsewhere. Canadians may now be wealthier in global terms, but the even exchange rate with the United States dollar now makes it immediately obvious that they also pay more than Americans for many goods.
A report released Thursday by BMO Nesbitt Burns, a unit of the Bank of Montreal, estimates that products are priced 24 percent higher in Canada than in the United States despite the Canadian dollar’s steady five-year march to parity with the United States dollar.
Retailers say there is a big lag time for events that affect pricing because most merchandise on store shelves was purchased six to 12 months ago. This obviously wouldn’t be the case, were prices to increase. Like I’ve said… pri
Royal Bank survey finds three in 10 Canadians are planning to buy a new home within the next two years according to RBC Royal Bank article published in the Westcoast Homes & Design Magazine May 2007.The possibility of mortgage rates rising in 2007 seems to be of much less concern across Canada, according to the RBC’s 15th Annual Homeownership Survey. In fact, more than half (57 per cent) of Canadians believe mortgage rates will drop or stay the same, compared to 31 per cent last year. The RBC poll also reveals that 49 per cent of Canadians are less apprehensive about interest rate increases, compared to 44 per cent in 2006.“When we assess the consumer setiment being expressed in this year’s study, a picture emerges of confident Canadians weighing their homebuying options in a very positive light,” explained Catherine Adams, RBC’s vice-presdient of Home Equity Financing. At the same time, while more than half of Canadians (59 per cent) believe housing prices will rise in 2007,

Canadians appear to be switching off conventional broadcasting media (including radio and television), and now logging on to the Internet - according to a new report on broadcasting by the CRTC.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s eight annual report on the state of the industry, found that 70 percent of Canadian households subscribed to the Internet in 2006, a six percent increase from 2005, and 60 percent use high speed internet, up from 51 per cent in 2005.
Although Canadians have more choice to both television and radio media than ever before, they are watching and listening less. More and more Canadians are using relatively new technology for everything from research, to watching and listening to radio and TV shows. The report revealed that 22 percent of Canadians listened to radio over the Internet in 2006 and six percent watched television. Internet advertisers benefited with revenues totalling $1-billion in 2006, as opposed to $562-million

Yes, it’s true, even the high-powered execs of my office can be seen, in turn, leaving the office with trash bags filled with stuff for recycling and they take it to the nearest center. Everyone prints double-sided like there’s no other way to do it, people don’t waste water, take their own mugs down to the coffee shop to avoid being served in styrofoam cups, all our computer monitors are LCD with automatic switch-off…

Another creationism poll in Canada (here's the earlier one) suggests that 60% (!!!) of Canadians believe God had either a direct or indirect role in creating mankind. That, if true, is beyond frightening:
The Canadian Press-Decima Research survey suggests that 60 per cent of Canadians believe God had either a direct or indirect role in creating mankind, shattering the myth that Canadians had long ago put their faith strictly behind the scientific explanation for creation.
The poll suggests Canadians divide in essentially three groups on the issue of creation: 34 per cent of those polled said humans developed over millions of years under a process guided by God; 26 per cent said God created humans alone within the last 10,000 years or so; and 29 per cent said they believe evolution occurred with no help from God.
“These results reflect an essential Canadian tendency,” said pollster Bruce Anderson. “We are pretty secular, but pretty hesitant to embrace atheism.&rdquo

Canadians support for our involvement in the Afghanistan war has fluctuated greatly since the campaign began. While everyone claims to 'support the troops', not all are in favor of the continued presence of our military in the war-torn nation. The great yo-yo of opinion dips when another fallen soldier comes home, and like clockwork causes one of the federal opposition parties to propose some half-baked cut-and-run idea like creating a time limit on a war. (STILL can't figure that one out, Stephane.)The Canadian public, particularly the younger generation of voters who are coming out of the over-liberalized, leftwing public education system, are forming their opinions on a mix of false, misguided, or downright wrong information. Worse, many are completely oblivious to the facts regarding the war itself.I have heard some interesting reasons for opposing our fighting this war: It's about oil; we weren't invited; the American's got themselves into this, therefore it's their war, no

In a weird display of political correctness, the Toronto Blue Jays have been mandated to revise a commercial. Read more below from the Washington Post...'The Blue Jays have been forced to revise a television commercial featuring DH Frank Thomas after the ad drew objections from the Television Bureau of Canada, a regulatory body for private broadcasters.A 30-second spot that shows the 6-foot-5, 275-pound Thomas taking part in a pillow fight with two young boys was edited to remove a scene where Thomas knocks one of the boys off a bed and onto the floor. Thomas leaves the room with a smile on his face as the youngster gets to his feet and says, "Wow."Laurel Lindsay, vice president of marketing for the Blue Jays, said Thomas and the child still exchange pillow blows in the edited version but the child is not knocked to the floor. Instead, he pops into the air when struck. The decision to revise the ad was first reported by the Toronto Globe and Mail. Lindsay called the controversy over th

You know I was interested in knowing the Canadian respond on the case of the Egyptian Spy El-Attar especially that he lived and worked in Canada and took the citizenship in last November 2006.The Canadian respond was important to me because already in this espionage case there are two wanted Israeli Mossad officers who are now in Canada and Egypt requested the Interpol to arrest them . Already as soon as the case was announced the Israeli Security Minster traveled from the United States to Canada and began visits to the Jewish lobby there saying that Egypt fabricated the whole case to the end of this talk Already the Israeli Minister went to Canada as soon as he could to avoid any diplomatic crisis between his country and Canada ,you see Canada warned Israel before from using its land and id in its secret service operations. FOR CANADIANS OBAMA WOULD BE A GREAT AMERICAN PRESIDENTBARACK OBAMA'S INTENTION TO RUN FOR THE AMERICAN PRESIDENCY IS GOOD NEWS FOR CANADIANS.Regardless of the fact that Bush is palsy, walsy with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Canadians would probably prefer Obama as an ally. Many of his views tend to go along with canadian's way of thinking. He is a Liberal in many ways and has many assets so important to Mid-East politics at present. The arab world would not see a threat in him, it would not see the white supremacist that Bush represents. Partially Black, partially muslim, not a fanatic pro-lifer,against the war in Iraq, not anti-gay he resembles more a canadian politician than an American Power driven eagle. The press will have a busy campaign year, Hillary Clinton's goons will of course do all they canto sling the mud but she does not represent the ideal candidate basing everything on experience, that experience is political and not charismatic. America has been so high stru
I have to say I agree with the Greens claim that Canadians don’t have enough vacation. As a university student who’s done a professional experience internship (basically take between 8-16 months of paid full-time employment as part of school) I can say that good vacation is necessary for being productive. After working myself too hard during the first few years of school (two and a half years, always taking classes and working, including summers) and seeing grades suffer, it took a year of a professional experience internship in a relaxed work environment before I felt I could even attempt classes again.
It’s also interesting that countries with higher vacation allotments seem to perform better. For a society bent on increasing profits and productivity, why haven’t we implemented what seems to work in every other country more productive than us? According to BonkWorld, France works 46 weeks out of the year (if you count Bastille Day, Lundi de Pentecote, and
So why not? Because it's too complicated, the Liberals say. Or it involves constitutional issues that don't need to be open. One doesn't have to know a lot about the Senate to understand why they're so keen on not supporting Harper's attempts at some degree of Senate reform.Fully 64 per cent of respondents liked the idea of being able to choose senators for future vacancies in the upper chamber, according to a Decima Research survey, made available exclusively to The Canadian Press. And a whopping 72 per cent supported limiting senators to eight-year terms. With a spring election possible and Harper's Tories in somewhat of a slump, Senate reform appears to be a winner across the country.Interesting. Two-thirds of Canadians support Harper's position on Senate reform. Do the math you Liberals, that's a clear majority. Here's one issue where the Liberals are more out of touch with Canadians than the Conservatives are, and with the numbers to back it up.
Liberals claim to be most closely aligned with what they think are Canadian values. This of course is part of their plan to simultaneously cater to soft NDP voters and keep whatever centre-right voters they have left."Jack Layton I do not really believe understands the economy, Stephen Harper really doesn't care about the environment," Brison said. "We're the party that understands the economy and cares about the environment."Added Rae: "I think this country is ready for a new government, I really believe Mr. Harper does not represent the views of the majority of Canadians. And I think the great strength of the Liberal party is that its values and beliefs and its abilities are much more closely tied to the views of most Canadians than the other parties."It seems as though they're all repeating what Dion is saying. That could function as some nice propaganda for the uninformed, but it also makes their "strategy" (if you can call it as such) very predictable and vulnerable to attack.
"It would be nice to have a debate with all of the facts on the table," Fraser said Tuesday in a speech to the Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies."I'll tell you right now, the story Canadians are receiving is like an iceberg. They're only seeing one-third of it."In part, the soft-spoken general blamed the media for focusing on the casualty count, rather than the more nuanced narratives of nation-building."What was reported this past summer was my operations in Sangin and Helmand; what I did to fight the Taliban," he said."No one reported the fact that I spent $20 million building roads, schools, wells and training and mentoring an Afghan corp commander." Ah, yes. When was the last time you read a news article about the reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan? Or the children going to school? When was the last time someone thought of writing a thoughtful article about a little girl's first day at an Afghan school?Uh... how about... NEVER? Get a load of this pathetic excuse by the
A Leger poll revealed that over three quarters of Canadians don't believe that Quebec is a nation. This of course stands in stark contrast to the overwhelming majority in the House of Commons that say it is. Perhaps it had a little to do with the wording of the question, and the ambiguity over the "sociological" nation versus a "country" such as Canada. The results are a bit unsettling to say the least.
Canadians attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, have made a video expressing their support for Elizabeth May in her by-election campaign for London-North-Centre.Three Canadians appear on the YouTube-hosted clip.To watch the clip, press "play" below, or click here to go to the YouTube page.
The anti-war left thinks that it's "supporting the troops" by pushing to bring them home. They refuse to believe that those in Afghanistan actually want to be there and strongly believe in what they're doing. Supporting the troops doesn't necessarily have to mean agreeing with the premise of the Afghan mission. But it does mean giving those fighting over there the respect they deserve, and ending this nonsense about ending a mission they believe in and which they've sacrificed a lot in. They think they know better, but the last person to understand anything about what it's like to fight in Afghanistan is the yuppie living in a downtown apartment building sipping some ridiculously-named coffee and reading news with a left-wing slant.

OTTAWA (Reuters) - One in five Canadians believes the attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, had nothing to do with Osama Bin Laden and were actually a plot by influential Americans, according to a poll released on Monday.ADVERTISEMENT
The Ipsos-Reid poll found that 22 percent of Canadians, and 26 percent of young Canadians, agree with the conspiracy theory. The number was the highest, at 32 percent, in Quebec, which has shown the least support for the U.S. war on terror.
The poll asked if the events of September 11, "including the thousands of American citizens who lost their lives on that day, were actually orchestrated by a group of highly influential Americans and others as part of a wider global conspiracy to profit from and gain power and who are actually protecting Osama Bin Laden from being captured."
"Conspiracy theories are popular, as we all know," said Ipsos pollster Paul Orovan.
Sixty-six percent said the actions wer
It's been a long time since Canadians harbored thoughts of crossing the border to buy a new car. Since the beginning of the year, the “loonie” is up more then 10 percent against the dollar. Now that the Canadian dollar is nearly equal in value with the American greenback (for the first time in 30 years), our neighbors to the north are doing some major cross-border shopping. The Chronicle Herald (of Halifax, Nova Scotia) reports that more than 64K American vehicles have found their way north so far this year; that's up 26 percent over year ago. One Toronto resident hankering after a new Mercedes S63 AMG found one selling for C$171K in Canada. When he threatened to cross into the U.S. and buy the car for US$127K, the price suddenly dropped to C$149.5K. Canadian car dealers claim sales are down by 25 percent across the board; they're “begging carmakers to cut their list prices.” NAFTA that.
CTV reports that a class action lawsuit suit filed in Ontario Superior Court claims carmakers and dealers conspired to violate “competition and consumer protection laws.” Lawyer Henry Juroviesky claims US car dealers suppressed cross-border shopping by limiting supply, inflating prices and voiding warranties. In the past, dealers “used the large gap between the Canadian dollar and U.S. greenback to justify the higher prices in Canada,” says Juroviesky. "Now that the dollar is at parity they can't use that cloud... to mask what they're doing.” Meanwhile, a recent study says the problem is going away. "In all of our 'popular' segments... the price gap between Canada and the U.S. narrowed in 2007," says Dennis DesRosiers, President of DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. of Richmond Hill, Ontario.
Don't be fooled - these Canadians don't say "eh?" There's no question that their song "15th of August" will make you long for summer days, wind blowing in your face, en route to the nearest Red Lemon (a.k.a. Dairy Queen). It harbors feelings of inn...
Thanks to the parity between the Canadian loonie and U.S. greenback-- and carmakers' failure to lower their Canadian prices to compensate-- our neighbors to the north are flocking south to buy new and used vehicles from American car dealers. The Toronto Star finally puts numbers to the trend: Canadian cross-border shoppers imported 24,873 cars in October. That's double the previous month's total (12,289). It seems the trade is having a ripple effect on the entire industry, as savvy buyers wait for automotive prices to drop. To wit: Canadian new car sales declined from August's 158,394 to October's 121k. The toll on "domestic" used cars could be even heavier. However, as we've reported, the entire trade has just fallen afoul of federal regulations requiring Canadian-spec, manufacturer-approved, anti-theft immobilizers. With over a thousand imported cars in limbo, the resulting confusion and outrage is certain to create some major political blowback-- esp
