Omar Khadr, Canadian child raised in Guantanamo Bay
Summary for Omar Khadr.... he was born in Toronto & lived in Canada until he was ten.  From ages 11-15 he was put in an Al-Qaida training camp in Afghanistan.  In 2002, it is alleged that he threw a grenade at US troops, killing one and injuring 3 others when they invaded his home. Note that the child was shot in the back while on his knees.  And that US troops used grenades themselves during the incident. From then until now he has been raised in Guantanamo Bay, not in the children's section, but held mostly in solitary confinement with the adults.  He has been tortured & only last year was allowed to contact his mother and to talk to a lawyer.  I don't normally republish whole articles, but I think the importance of this human rights violation overri

Musashi and Canadian Brass on speed
Last night, as we practiced aigamaeate, Kel and Rick commented on the difference between what I was doing and what they were doing. They were pulling uke around in a circle and it was making tori have to go faster to compensate for lack of offbalance and for the centrifugal effect. I was floating uke into offbalance, slipping aside at the proper time, doing less, moving slower, and getting greater effect. This brings me back to Musashi’s Wind book, which I was quoting the other day: Speed in Other SchoolsSpeed is not part of the true Way of strategy. Since CBC didn't resume its coverage of Hillier, I thought I'd check out the site of the foreign affairs committee only to discover this. Besides the title and the 'Home' and 'Francais' buttons, there's nothing else there. I know the Cons enjoy screwing around with the committees as outlined in their 'dirty tricks' manual that was revealed last year, but scrubbing a committee website is a bit much - even for them. If someone can find an actual working page for this committee, let me know.- RCMP Deputy Commissioner Barbara George has been found guilty of cont

ARE CANADIAN OIL SANDS THE ANSWER?
There’s lots of talk on the financial channels this morning regarding all of the untapped possibilities that we can explore to supply our country’s need for oil in the coming years. Canadian oil sands have been getting a lot of coverage because they say there is more oil in that sand in Canada than there is in all of Saudi Arabia. It’s an expensive process to extract the oil from the sand. It has to be heated to separate the two and that eats up the profit per barrel. I believe I heard mention of a price of $30 per barrel. In these days of $100 plus prices for a barrel of the black gold 30 bucks seems like a piddling amount doesn’t? Therefore, we can probably look for daily oil production in Canada to start kicking butt if it hasn’t already. In addition to the possibilities

Canadian Wins Almost $200K Spinning Slotland’s Treasure Box
Regular video poker player gets lucky when he switches to slotsSpring time in Canada is looking that much sweeter for a video poker player who switched to slots on a recent spring day and won a nearly $200,000 progressive jackpot at Slotland.com. Slotland’s jackpot is hit, on average, every six or eight weeks. Since it had been more than that since an American player won the last $100,000 jackpot, many players sensed this win was overdue.“It’s hard to resist when the jackpot gets to big numbers like that,” said Martin Smith. “Lots of players play a little more when they feel like there’s going to be a big jackpot winner any second. They want it to be them! So we’d been very busy in the days before the win.”“I usually stick with video poker,” said the player known as TEX

Canadian Tire Scraps its Print Catalog – A Foreshadowing of Yellow Pages Fate?
Canadian Tire announced yesterday that they will be phasing out the print edition of their catalogue and replacing it with an online edition. “all of our research was indicating that readership levels were decreasing and more and more people are on line,” Canadian Tire spokeswoman Lisa Gibson said in a telephone interview Thursday. “So that's why we decided to let people know on line and not make a big production.” -Quoted from an article by John Partridge of the Globe and Mail In my mind the above quote could easily apply to the print edition of Yellow Pages. Shares of YLO.UN have slid 30% over the last 3 months and as the yield creeps higher I’m increasingly being asked if I think now is a good time to buy YLO.UN. Canadian Banks - Have They Bounced Off The Bottom?
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the purchase of my first dividend stock. Dipping My Toes - My First Dividend Stock. Since it was my first individual stock purchase I decided to go with a Canadian bank (BMO). At the time its dividend yield was an astonishing 6%. Over the next couple of weeks I saw the share price sink almost 20% further, until the yield was at 7.2%! It didn't seem to matter if the other Canadian banks were up or down on a given day, BMO continued to sink like a stone. Was I bothered by this? Well, I'd be lying if I said it had no effect on me whatsoever. We all experience a strong emotional reaction to loss, and I'm just as human as anyone else, so seeing stock down 20% two weeks after I bought it did leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth. However, since my time horizo

Canadian Housing at Least Affordable Level in 18 Years
(CEP News) Ottawa – Housing affordability is at its worst level in 18 years as a result of sound macroeconomic fundamentals such as job growth, says a report released from RBC Economics on Friday. However, the report also says most Canadian markets will see that lack of affordability improve in 2008 as price increases weaken, incomes grow and rates for popular five-year mortgages are reduced.“Housing affordability deteriorated across the country in every quarter in 2007, to end the year at its most unaffordable level since 1990,” said RBC assistant chief economist Derek Holt. “Back then, soaring interest rates and a recession sparked much of the trouble. Today, a long upward trend in house prices driven by sounder macroeconomic fundamentals, like job growth, is primarily responsible
