Today is the 38th anniversary of the day President Nixon went on national television – all three channels – to announce attacking Cambodia, Vietnam’s western neighbor. To many this was a widening of the Vietnam War. And this was also the trigger for anti-war protests that led to the death of four Kent State University students on May 4th. I probably ignored that Nixon announcement as I ignored almost all news of the Vietnam War at that time. On April 30, 1970, I’d been married less than eight months to a man about to go on active army duty. I found playing ostrich with my head buried in the sand a very comforting position. Last night I watched the NCSI episode that takes place in Baghdad. While the actual murder is done by an outsider, the episode conveys some of the
The bus from Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam to Phnom Penh, Cambodia is usually straightforward. We spent US$15 for it. The six-hour land trip is a very common route. And you can easily buy tickets anywhere in Vietnam. But for this trip, we encountered some problems. We left Mui Ne at 1 a.m. for the five-hour trip to HCMC. We were to catch the 8 a.m. bus to PP hoping to be there by 2 p.m. I had always wanted to shop again at the Russian Market since they have a lot of great cultural souvenirs and export overruns there. What I thought would be an easy border crossing turned out to be an irritating one. At the Vietnamese border, the immigration officer treated us shabbily. We were standing in front of him for almost 30 minutes and he was not minding us. At times, he was smirking. When asked

15 November 2007 (Yahoo News) - An excavation at Phum Snay reveals 35 skeletons, five of which are women who were buried with swords and possibly helmets. Evidence of woman warriors? This find is certainly unusual indeed, but it’s probably too early to get excited about the prospect of some amazonian society. It’ll be interesting to see if the skeletal remains reveal any telltale signs of battle-related injuries, particularly of cuts to the bone around the arm areas. The story doesn’t give any approximate date for the burials, but it looks like a pre-Angkorian find.

17 October 2007 (TravelVideo.TV) - There was a brief mention about new designated tourists routes in Angkor Wat earlier, and this article provides more information about the proposed tourist routes. Cambodian tourism has always had the problem of having too many visitors, which is causing the temples a lot of stress as even Siem Reap town struggles to keep up with the tourist bandwidth. Visitors to Angkor may soon have to follow designated circuit routes, designed to stave attention off Angkor Wat and bring tourists to the other temples in Angkor.
Incidentally, there are already two circuit routes in Angkor, the Grand Circuit and the Minor Circuit, which take either an eastward or westward circular route around the temples. These routes are still rather long and I don’t think they can be done in a day. What I’d really like to see is smaller, thematic routes through Angkor, organised by period or ruler, that would give the Angkor tourists a chance to appreciate the Khmer tem

30 July 2007 (The Associate Press, by way of the Gainsville Sun and featured on many other American newspapers) - A stolen Apsara (celestial nymph) head is recovered in the US and returned to Cambodia. U.S. Returns Stolen Artifact to Cambodia
The U.S. government returned to Cambodia the head of an Angkor-era sculpture that had been stolen and smuggled out of the Southeast Asian country.
The artifact, weighing about 4.4 pounds, is a sandstone head of a celestial dancer, or apsara, from the 12th century, the U.S. Embassy said Monday in a statement.

Cambodia’s temple tranquility
I always thought that visiting Cambodia’s Angkor temples would be like exploring a lost city.
For many years I had heard tales of crumbling ruins hidden from time by steamy triple-canopy jungle that echoed with birdsong and the call of mysterious animals.
I imagined walking along jungle tracks, coming upon a faded ruin only after the last strike of a guide’s machete cleared an overgrown patch of scrub. But the reality of Siem Reap’s Angkor is this: hordes of tourists and well-worn paths leading to crowded temples.

12 July 2007 (Brunei Times) - The Brunei Times carries an unauthored article about the history of Cambodia. For a more fleshed out history of Cambodia, particularly of the Angkor period, I highly recommend Charles Higham’s The Civilization of Angkor.
History of Cambodia
NO one knows for certain how long people have lived in what is now Cambodia. A study suggests that people using stone tools lived in the cave as early as 4000 bc, and rice has been grown on Cambodian soil since well before the 1st century ad.
The first Cambodians likely arrived long before either of these dates, probably migrated from the north.
By the beginning of the 1st century ad, Chinese traders began to report the existence of inland and coastal kingdoms in Cambodia. These kingdoms already owed much to Indian culture, which provided alphabets, art forms, architectural styles, religions, and a stratified class system.
Local beliefs that stressed the importance of ancestral spirits coexisted and remain powerfu

11 June 2007 (Bangkok Post) - The Preah Vihear temple which straddles the border between Thailand and Cambodia is the next site that the government of Cambodia hopes to be listed as a World Heritage site. The temple was built by Kings Suryavarman I and II between the 11th and 12th centuries. Ownership of the site was disputed between Thailand and Cambodia, and the International Court of Justice awarded the latter custody of the site. However, the temple is more easily accessible from the Thai side of the border.

As Bryan Tripp discovered, helping others is often the best way to learn more about yourself.
The white Toyota pick-up truck bumps along the pitted dirt road and over several very questionable wooden bridges. That last pothole we cleared could have swallowed a Volkswagen. Later on we pass through a traffic jam of stubborn water buffalo.
My hands are white knuckled as I sit on the side of the pickup, clinging with all my strength. I am on my way to Tol Krol East village in the Pursat province of Cambodia.
I am part of a team of seven volunteers from across Canada and one from the UK who are in Cambodia with the Hope International Development Agency (Hope) Understanding Needs in Other Nations (UNION) program.
The goal of the UNION program is to immerse Westerners in the daily rural life of developing countries like Cambodia in order to learn the challenges people face and understand the causes of the poverty cycle.
Our team will help build a school for the children who have no acc

I first became aware of Cambodia through a song by the early 80’s punk band The Dead Kennedys. I was about 13, living in an upper middle class suburb in New Jersey. My friend Jeff introduced me to DK, and in turn, the song Holiday in Cambodia. I liked it because it poked fun at rich, preppy kids (yes, the irony was lost on me at the time), by comparing their normal life to Cambodia during the genocide of the late 1970’s. Beyond the song, my knowledge was limited to an awareness that Cambodia was probably a dark, dangerous place. While our war with Vietnam was a topic for history class, I can’t recall a mention of Cambodia in school, which seems odd given around 2 million people died during a 5-year period within my lifetime.
Fast forward to my mid-20’s when I start to consider traveling to southeast Asia. I still didn’t know much about Cambodia, except that it was sandwiched between a few countries I’d heard were popular on the backpacker circu

The following is an email I originally sent to friends when I was in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. At the time it was my second time there, having previously been in 2004.The first time I was there I didn't even venture out of the capital, much to everyones disbelief. Inexplicably drawn to the bar scene (inexplicably?), I spent a month staggering from one bar to the next, and then back again. My second time proved to be no different. The only notable exception being that this time I was there for the best part of three months and spent considerably more money. A lot more money.Having read the email again, my immediate thoughts are why I'm so hell-bent on returning? You do the math. Anyway, below is the email for your viewing (dis)pleasure:Alright folks? It's time for an update. As most of you are aware, there is usually an underlying theme to my emails (alcohol), and this one will not break with tradition. That said, slightly different style this time. I will try and enlighten you as to what

"the travelling ducks" packed their gears and off we went to venture this city that holds a gruesome history and is one of the 7 wonders contenders for its Angkor Wat . I had gone to Phnom Penh on an earlier flight on last Tuesday for my meetings. Pato join in on Wednesday night which was the start of the journey of these ducks in Cambodia.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital city, makes for a great short holiday with plenty to see. Once called 'Paris of the East', much of its architecture dates back to the pre-war French colonial period.
We stayed at Hotel Intercontinental - the first 5 star hotel built in Phnom Penh, simply because my jobsite was within the Hotel compound. I got the know the construction of the hotel itself took 5 years due to limitation of resources and long leadtime i

Another example of violations against trade unionists around the world:
Cambodia: Another Trade Union Leader MurderedThe ITUC has called today on the Cambodian authorities to open a proper investigation into the murder of Hy Vuthy, 36, a leader of the Free Trade Union of the Workers of Cambodia (FTUWKC) who was shot to death on February 24. This latest murder follows a series of attacks on trade unionists in the country, which has a reputation for severe violations of trade union rights.
The FTUWKC received information that Hy Vuthy was killed shortly after successfully negotiating with a company for a one-day holiday on the occasion of the Khmer New Year.
According to reports, he was shot three times by two unidentified assailants on a motorbike as he drove home on Saturday morning.Read more in the homepage of ITUC-CSI
