Caffeine - Drink coffee to breathe easier
Caffeine is a methylxanthine stimulant found in coffee that makes morning lectures somewhat more tolerable. Methylxanthines are methylated derivatives of xanthine. Animals produce xanthine as an intermediate in the breakdown of purines (e.g. guanine or adenine, the purine bases found in DNA and RNA) to uric acid, the stuff that causes gout and is excreted in urine. Other methylxanthines include theophylline (found in tea) and theobromine (found in cocoa, and thus in chocolate). At the biochemical level, caffeine inhibits an enzyme called phosphodiesterase (the same target of Viagra!) and blocks the action of adenosine. These actions wake you up (and produce nervousness and insomnia at high doses), get your heart pumping (increase heart rate and increase the force of heart contraction), caus

I can hardly keep my eyes open for the next 30 minutes after lunch. My solution for this is to have a nice cup of coffee right after the meals. For the lunch time section, I just got to have a strong cup of coffee. I have to admit that I need that caffeine to keep me awake so that I can keep on working. It actually keeps my brain running fresh and ideas running. I did experience a hard time when I ran out of coffee. I end up doing nothing that whole afternoon. All I can do is walking around the office to keep me awake. It took me at least an hour to actually get over it. I found a picture that describes how

      Caffeine Possibly Tied to Miscarriages
Too much caffeine during pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage, a new study says, and it suggests that pregnant women may want to reduce their intake or cut it out entirely. Many obstetricians already advise women to limit caffeine, although the subject has long been contentious, with conflicting studies, fuzzy data and various recommendations given over the years. The new study, to be published Monday in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology, finds that pregnant women who consume 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day — the amount in 10 ounces of coffee or 25 ounces of tea — may double their risk of miscarriage.Pregnant women should try to give up caffeine for at least the first three or four months, said the lead author of the study, Dr. De-Kun Li, a re

      Caffeine
If you are like me, this is a weakness of yours too. I digest way too much caffeine each day. I probably have at least six or more servings each day. More than I should consume in several days. I drink too much cola. That is my problem. Not only is it loaded with sugar, it has caffeine in it too. A cup of coffee in the morning to get you going isn't going to hurt. It can help you wake up and be more alert. It can help jump start your day into something worthwhile. Instead of feeling sleepy and tired. Though, if you drink too much caffeine, you can have the opposite effect that you are looking for. It can drain all of your energy and make you feel very tired. It can also cause you to have problems sleeping. This can be a very big problem. You may not think of it as a problem, but it is. Caf

Even Night Owls Should Watch the Caffeine
It’s cold and wet here in western Washington. Not only is it raining, did I mention it’s cold and wet, but it’s also dark by 4:30 pm. This does not suit my night owl nature. I like it in the middle of the summer when the sun is bright and shining until late in the day. Thankfully I have friends who aren’t daunted by silly things like bedtimes and schedules. Oh no, these girls know how to live. All of which means last night I was ordering coffee at Starbucks at 9 pm and heading off for a 10 pm move. Yes, a 10 pm movie! On a school night! The heady night life of a homeschooling mom. A few notes to self: Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT drink Starbucks regular coffee at 9 pm. Even ordering it 1/3 regular, 2/3rds decaf is too much. As a night owl you will NOT fall asleep in the middle of a movie. You do NOT need caffeine to stay awake. The caffeine, however, will insure you do NOT fall asleep. For hours. Do NOT leave the computer turned on with email loaded

      Caffeine and Weight Loss
If you are a coffee maniac, there is good news -- you don't have to skip your cup of coffee to get a good workout. In fact, caffeine and weight loss may go hand in hand. According to Lawrence Armstrong, professor of exercise physiology at the Human Performance Laboratory at the University of Connecticut, "For years, people have believed that consuming caffeine would dehydrate the body or result

Relating High Blood Pressure to Caffeine Consumption
Caffeine is a chemical compound in the leaves, seeds, and fruits of more than 63 plant species, but it most commonly comes from coffee and cocoa beans, cola nuts, and tea leaves. But coffee isn't the only source of caffeine — a can of cola contains 45 mg, green tea has 30 mg, an ounce of chocolate has 20 mg, and even Anacin comes in at 65 mg for two tablets. How to Take a Caffeine Nap
Scientists say that a successful midday nap depends on two things: timing and (no kidding) caffeine consumption. Experiments performed at Loughborough University in the UK showed that the sleep-deprived need only a cup of coffee and 15 minutes of shut-eye to feel amazingly refreshed. Step 1. Come to Rockhoppers. This is an important step, however you might have to substitute some other, less comfortable, place. Like your home. Step 2. Have a double espresso. The caffeine has to travel through your gastro-intestinal tract, giving you time to nap before it kicks in. Step 3. Lie back in one of our comfortable chairs. Close your eyes and relax. Even if you only doze, you’ll get what’s known as effective microsleep, or momentary lapses of wakefulness. Step 4. Limit your nap to 15 minutes. A half hour can lead to sleep inertia, or the spinning down of the brain’s prefrontal cortex, which handles functions like judgment. This gray matter can take 30 minutes to reboot. Step 5.

Anyway, bits and pieces, ’cause of that whole time issue:    Y’all gotta come out of lurkdom/leave your feedreaders tomorrow and comment on the blogs you read. Come to think of it, so do I. If I can get a hold of a realtor, we’re going to go look at two houses tomorrow at lunchtime. A quick trip home to Maryland is happening soon, I think/hope. Happy Banned Books Week. Go read something other than a blog, like some of the Top Ten Most Contested Books of 2006. Which reminds me, I just finished reading Phillip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” Trilogy, and it’s really odd to me that I don’t hear more about Christians trying to get THOSE books banned instead of Harry Potter. “His Dark Materials” seems to be an all-out war on organized re

      Coffee, caffeine, and expresso drinks
I was recently in Italy competing in the 2007 World Masters Athletics championships in Riccione. I will be updating this blog with some of the highlights including videos of the 100 meters and 200 meters Heats and Quarter Finals (M40 division only.. sorry guys!) I’ll start off with food… my favorite topic! One of hardest things to get used to was the lack of Starbucks and the “movie theater” grande and venti size giant coffees. According to the 2007 IAAF List of Prohibited substances, caffeine is not considered a Prohibited substance. From: http://www.lokeshdhakar.com/2007/08/20/an-illustrated-coffee-guide/ I thought this was a great beginners guide to drinking expresso drinks! Copyright 2007 by Speedendurance.com. interesting Caffeine Facts
The following is reprinted from Uncle John’s Legendary Lost Bathroom Reader. What is America’s favorite drug? You guessed it - caffeine. We use more caffeine than all other drugs - legal or illegal - combined. Want to know what the stuff is doing to you? Here’s a quick overview. BACKGROUND If you start the day with a strong cup of coffee or tea, you’re not alone. Americans ingest the caffeine equivalent of 530 million cups of coffee every day. Caffeine is the world’s most popular mood-altering drug. It’s also one of the oldest: according to archaeologists, man has been brewing beverages from caffeine-based plants since the Stone Age. HOW CAFFEINE PICKS YOU UP Caffeine doesn’t keep you awake by supplying extra energy; rather it fools your body into thinking it isn’t tired. When your brain is tired and wants to slow down, it releases a chemical called adenosine. Adenosine travels to special cells called receptors, where it goes to work counteracting the chemicals that sti

      The Lingering Effects of Caffeine
Turns out that extra-tall latte first thing in the morning does more than just perk you up - it also stresses you out. And even if you consume your caffeine before 1 p.m., you could still be feeling the effects - higher blood pressure and stress levels - by the time you go to bed. Researchers at Duke University in Durham, N.C., studied the effects of caffeine on 47 regular coffee drinkers. Participants consumed the caffeine equivalent of four small cups of coffee in two pills (500 milligrams), one pill in the morning and one sometime before 1 p.m. On another day, participants were given placebos. When consuming the caffeine pills, participants felt more stressed, had slightly higher blood pressure and produced 32 percent more of the stress hormone epinephrine than when taking the placebo. Researchers suggest that people who have conditions that are aggravated by stress, such as heart disease or high blood pressure, reduce the amount of caffeine they consume. FACT: Caffeine has a h

Can Caffeine Cut Your Risk of Skin Cancer?
A recent study into the effects of caffeine seems to indicate that the risk of some skin cancers can be reduced by consuming moderate amounts of caffeine. The mechanism or trigger appears to involve skin cells that are in a precancerous stage due in part to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation. Ultraviolet radiation or UV rays are a product of the sun and the specific UV rays referred to in the study were UVB rays which oscillate at a slightly slower rate than UVA rays. Both types of ultraviolet radiation make up ninety percent of the UV rays that strike the earth surface.Tanning is big business with billions of dollars spent worldwide on indoor tanning sessions, lotions, self-tanning sprays and the like. In spite of recent warnings about spending too much time in the sun, there still seems to be a very strong societal connection between having a tan and maintaining the appearance of health and youth. It is almost as though we can not help ourselves and let us be honest, the warmth of

"Caffeine and Nicotine are my drugs" Says Penny Mellor
On the 9th August 2007, Ms Mellor stated the following"No it isn't but I know that if I or any parent/carer were to deprive a baby or child of oxygen deliberately and used the excuse "I just wanted to see what would happen" we would be, quite rightly, arrested and charged with child abuse. Actually I know parents who were accused of this, even when they hadn't done it"She then writes"Your question about smoking in pregancy raises an interesting point. Smoking causes hypoxia in the unborn baby, FSID and other research foundations have published extensively on the dangers of ALTES SIDS brain injury and smoking. If smoking causes SIDS, hypoxia and brain injury then you have argued yourself into a corner, because if just a small amount of oxygen deprivation along with elevated CO 2 is considered to be a huge factor in SIDS, then DELIBERATELY creating hypoxia and then adding huge amounts of CO2 in babies that are already identified as being high risk for SIDS will do what.......?Thankyou

Avoid chocolates and caffeine to control acne:
Acne is a skin condition I am sure practically all of you have suffered from at one time or the other in your lives. Though I have tried many creams to help cure acne, I have noticed that your daily diet and nutrition intake greatly affects your acne management.   1. Like for all health problems in life, water is a very important part of your acne nutritional problem. In fact distilled water is a better choice. Drink at least 6-8 ounce glasses of pure water. I wouldn’t suggest any major changes in the diet for acne; however it does seem to be beneficial if you avoid high-fat, fried foods and salty foods as these foods tend to aggravate acne. 2. You could try avoiding dairy products for a month as some people develop allergic reactions to dairy products. It is the fat content of the dairy product that can worsen acne. When re-introducing dairy products into your diet, remember to introduce only one product to your diet at a time. This way you will be able to find out what triggers yo

      Exercise, Caffeine Fight Cancer
Can adding a cup or two of coffee to the exercise routine increase protection from skin cancer? New research indicates that just might be the case. The combination of exercise and caffeine increased destruction of precancerous cells that had been damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet-B radiation, according to a team of researchers at Rutgers University. Americans suffer a million new cases of skin cancer every year, according to the National Cancer Institute. In mice there is a protective effect from both caffeine and voluntary exercise, and when both are provided — not necessarily at the same time — protection is even more than the sum of the two, said Allan H. Conney of the laboratory for cancer research at Rutgers. “We think it likely that this will extrapolate to humans, but that has to be tested,” Conney said in a telephone interview. Nonetheless, he added, people should continue to use sunscreen. Exposing the mice to ultraviolet-B light causes some skin cells to b

      Death by Caffeine
Also posted on torahlab.orgThis Tisha B'Av was different for me than any other year. Sadder, more meaningful, and I managed to stay in Shul right through to the end of Kinot! And the reason? A caffeine pill!!! One little yellow pill, the equivalent of 4 cups of coffee, made all the difference.I didn't realise how dependent I was on coffee until yesterday. Although I sometimes have headaches if I don't drink enough coffee, I can usually manage without, and I don't seem to see any noticeable improvement or difference before and after I have my morning java. But now that I know how good it is for me, and how it improves my davening and thinking and makes everything more meaningful, I'm going to have to make sure I am fully dosed at all times. Woo hoo!Of course all of the above is meant tongue in cheek. Mood altering drugs are not the way to get closer to G-d, or to make life more meaningful. But still...There is an interesting website here which will tell you how many cups of coffee

      Caffeine cause acne
According to some experts, caffeine-containing foods and beverages can cause or worsen acne. This may be more of an inference by association, however, as the link between the aggravation of rosacea (sometimes called adult acne), a type of skin inflammation in adults not related to acne, can be traced to food sensitivities or allergies associated with caffeine-containing foods. It is also possible that the processed sugar in caffeinated soft drinks aggravates acne. Others claim that acne and rosacea are not worsened by the caffeine contained in certain foods but by the flushing effect of ingesting hot beverages, which can make the conditions look worse. Why I Need Caffeine
For the first several months of the brain tumor journey, Lou would wake up not knowing what had happened. I always stayed in bed until he woke up because the awakening was always awful. He would wake up, and ask what time it was. That would lead to , "Why am I not at the office". The brilliant people from rehab (sorry, they really ARE brilliant, but they do not know WHAT to do with brain tumor patients) told me to explain to him that the reason he was not at work was because he was not well. Because he was not well, with a brain tumor. How's that for a great way to start the day? That inevitably lead to tears, anxiety, questions and more questions, more tears and anxiety. The routine repeated itself daily, for months. It could take two hours to get out of bed. I didn't follow their advice for long, but no matter what I tried, it didn't work. There was a book I was supposed to take Lou through each day, at breakfast. The book had things in it, like the day, date, o
