The Baltimore Orioles last night defeated the Seattle Mariners, 3-2, in a razor tight game which saw a consistent and focused Daniel Cabrera not walk anyone in eight innings on impressive work. In the eighth inning, with the score tied 2-2, Nick Markakis hit a solo homer, his only hit, that made all the difference. Baltimore snapped their two game losing skid, and have played well within the last week, winning four out of six. Melvin Mora had two hits; one, a triple, and the other knocked the other Oriole run home. In an unusual twist, according to John Lowe of the Detroit Free Press, Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland announced that Carlos Guillen and Miguel Cabrera will switch positions for at least the short-term future; as of this writing, Guillen will man third base while Cabrera will be the regular first baseman. Prior to the switch, Guillen had played 96 games in the major leagues at third while Cabrera had never played first base until very recently. Leyland has said very little about the switch nor has he hinted at whether this is a permanent move. Although Leyland hasn't said it outright, I get the impression that the switch was made to imply that Guillen and Cabrera were deficient defensively at their former positions.
