Now, I don't want to speak ill of the dead--this gentleman, I'll call him "Burt," he was run over by a watermelon truck years ago--but, hell, everybody knew ol' Burt! He had this Annie Oakley-era carbine and was always seein' things. Leprechauns. Bigfoot. The Abominable Snowman. Big channel catfish that walked around delivering newspapers...I mean, you get the idea. So one day he says, "Byron, you got a black-footed ferret problem." I say, "What?" He says, "Right out there behind the Dew Drop Inn. Black feet. Looks like a ferret. Eats prairie dogs." I gave him a ten, said, "Go home, Burt. And take a bath." Well, next thing you know, he's talkin' to the papers. Suddenly one ferret becomes a whole symphony of ferrets! I say, "Burt, show me the ferret." He does. It's a cat. Common house cat. He wants to shoot it. I said, "Burt, that's sombody's putty-tat! Put that thing away!" Now the Park Service wants to re-introduce'em. Like, Mr. Ferret, meet Mrs. Prairie Dog and her six bite
"The Park Service...says my state is short of prairie dogs. Of course, that is not the case. We have far more prairie dogs than we know what to do with. The prairie dogs were born--I should say luckily for them--with a button nose and fur on their tail. Otherwise, they would essentially look like a rat. We are told by Federal authorities we need more prairie dogs, not because they think prairie dogs are cute, but apparently because they want to reintroduce something called the black-footed ferret in my state. The last person to spot a black-footed ferret in my state allegedly spotted a black-footed ferret some 20 years ago and was widely thought, according to local folklore, to have been drinking at the time."--Feb. 26, 2007.
