Private businesses are replacing transport cooperatives on inter-provincial bus routes, said Nguyen Ngoc Thua, director of HCM City’s Mien Dong (Eastern) Bus Station.
Private businesses eyeing potential gains improved their services, said Thua. In contrast, with cooperatives, each member owns their own bus so they cannot find the capital to improve service.

Maryland will be transitioning its transit buses to hybrids over the next few years. When a bus needs to be replaced, instead of buying a diesel-only bus, a diesel-electric hybrid one will be purchased. Aside from the obvious environmental benefit of using less fuel, hybrid buses are also quieter, which might make for a more [...]

Delhi is home to 14 million people, not counting those who live technically just outside its limits but are Delhiites for all practical purposes. Over 1.6 million Delhiites own cars while 3 million own two wheelers. To help this huge mass of humanity commute in this vast and largely horizontal city, there were just 7,000 buses as of August 2007. This number should have gone up to around 10,000 by n

This morning I waited forty-five minutes for a bus to turn up. The live-timer kept advertising buses but none ever actually came. It wasn't just heading towards North Greenwich and Blackheath either, I only saw one going the other way.
The bus stop was completely mobbed by the time a 486 finally turned up, it must have overtaken another one just before getting to us as I was convinced the bus

The environment's been getting an unexpected boost on the Indonesian island of Bali in the last couple of weeks. Fuel shortages caused by late arrivals of tankers to Bali's main fuel depot has meant that many gas stations simply closed up shop. And that meant some tourists had their trips well and truly disrupted. With bus drivers unable to drive their empty-tanked buses, some travelers got stranded while others were ferried around in smaller cars that still had some gas.Bali Tourism officials were quite concerned--especially as it's supposed to be Visit Indonesia Year--but perhaps it's just a strong shove from fate to remind people about the idea of green travel. Who knows where the fuel might run out next? We'd better start learning to walk again.

1700 Hybrid Buses Ordered
Allison Transmission, according to the Green Car Congress, has received orders totalling 1700 new hybrid bus transmissions for municipal fleets in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and Minneapolis/St. Paul. The order would double the number of GM-Allison powered buses on the roads, and may create the largest fleet of hybrids in the US via Washington's order for nearly 1000. There are currently about 1000 of the hybrid buses on the roads right now, helping to make an efficient form of urban travel even cleaner.
According to GCC, Allison builds the hybrid transmissi

alone.
US Transportation Secretary Mary Peters unveiled a proposal today to make school bus seat backs four inches taller and to require short buses to begin using shoulder strap seat belts, the AP reports. Peters didn't go so far as to recommend mandated seat belts in all buses, saying local school districts should decide for themselves whether to retrofit their buses.
"Our proposed rule would make children safer, put parents at ease and give communities a clearer picture of how to protect students," Peters said in a news release. "It's never too late to learn, especially when it comes to protecting our children."
The department will take comments on the proposed rule for the next 60 days.
The Marin Institute says it has come up with the magic bullet to end underage drinking in New York City: ban alcohol advertising on buses and subways.Last week the neo-Prohibitionist group was in New York and mounted a city hall protest to try to get Metropolitan Transportation Authority policy changed. Less than 5 percent of advertising on buses and trains in the New York comes from beer, wine and spirits brands.Marin Institute bomb throwers accused the MTA of promoting underage drinking. The reality is that anyone living in the five boroughs is constantly hit by advertising messages on television, radio, newspapers, billboards, transit, Internet and other sources. Alcohol messages are just a fraction of what kids see. If the folks at the Marin Institute really wanted to solve the underage drinking problem they would support two things immediately:1. Lowering the legal drinking age from 21 years old to 18 years old. If you can vote, legally sign contracts and join the military, you oug

This morning (17th Sep) I saw the ad released by Tamil Nadu govt in THE HINDU that they are launching Volvo City Buses in Chennai. Since my earlier post on Bangalore Volvo City buses was extremely popular [link here] I thought I'll write a similar post on Chennai Volvo. So here we go.It’s the same B7RLE variant of Volvo transit bus which is rocking Bangalore roads that will be hitting Chennai roads. If you ask me, the dashing red coloured Volvo in Bangalore, covered further with advertisements, looks a bit more attractive than the pale white colour Chennai Metropolitan has chosen. Nevertheless, it should be a good experience to Chennai commuters. (Even Singapore and several other countries use this same model...)While I intend to take more pictures of these buses during my next visit to Chennai, here’s one photo sourced from internet. Bangalore has a SMS based location identification service for Volvo city buses. Hope Chennaities can expect similar service (details here). MTC has
Money and Enforcement Issues Add to the Safety QuestionEver wonder if the present compartmentalization system is safe enough for school children on school buses? No seat belts. No side protection. Children in padded seats spaced close together, like eggs in a carton. When a former Grant County bus driver was sentenced to 22 years in prison for a near fatal wreck (while she was under the influence of drugs) many Kentuckians saw the video taken by the bus camera. Students were shaken violently and several were seriously injured.Aside from safe vehicle and a sober driver can the busses that carry school children be made safer? Some have suggested seat belts for all children but there is reason to believe that might even produce more - and more serious - injury to children. Texas recently required seat belts and shoulder restraints on their schoo busses.Check out the crash test video and compare for yourself the present compartmentalization system, seat belts and seat belts with shoul
China buses are quite gangster.Like I said the other day, I took a little trip to Nantong. The show went well and Dj Mick ripped it up. The Nantong Scarlet crowd is pretty good, even for a Wednesday.BUT the bus over was one crazy ride and so was the bus back, so I'm making this post into two parts dedicated to my fun trip, both conveniently named: The Bus Over and The Bus Back. The Bus OverGot on the bus and luckily I could fit into my seat cause there was no space between my knees and the seat in front of me. I thought the folks in front of me had their chairs in the reclined position... NOPE!!! All the bus seats were like this. The glass on the windsheid looked like they had bulletholes. Now China doens't allow folks to have guns unless you are the police or your in the mafia, and the mafia won't make their guns so obvious to the public... So this leads me to believe that this bus was used during World War II and it caught a couple of strays picking up folks.Next up, there was a poi

Soon the annual flood of yellow school buses will pour onto local roads as thousands of children begin their daily transport to and from school.Last school year brought headlines about a handful of dangerous school bus incidents in Kentucky and Ohio that area school officials say have prompted them to stress student safety this school year."Our bus drivers steer a 38-foot-long, $70,000 vehicle loaded with the most precious cargo on earth - our children," says Tracey Carson, spokeswoman for Mason schools in Warren County (OH)."The first and last people our students see to and from school is their school bus driver. These drivers are an integral part of our formula for successful schools," Carson added. "Our drivers' desire for safety is paramount, and they spend countless hours training and maintaining our fleet. We're very fortunate to have the drivers we do."But as more than 1.6 million students in Ohio and Kentucky climb aboard for the start of the school year, education officials
Texas just decided that school kids should be strapped into buses equipped with lap and shoulder belts.California, Florida, Louisiana, New York and New Jersey require seat belts on new school buses, too.Yet most school districts across the country don't require seat belts on school buses -- largely because of cost and low fatality rates that say the big yellow bus already is safe. But sentiment may be changing.New federal guidelines due this fall are expected to propose voluntary standards for the use of belts. That's a shift in long-standing policy.Researchers at Columbus Children's Hospital in Ohio last year found 17,000 school bus-related injuries in the U.S. every year, a rate up to three times more than expected.''People don't have a clue to the amount of force that's transferred by a side impact or rollover to the bodies of these school children,'' said expert Gary A. Las circunstancias del impacto aun se desconocen y son materia de investigación en la fiscalía, ya que, aun se deben estudiar factores tales como la lluvia que caía incesantemente a la hora de la tragedia o la velocidad del bus con su correspondiente dificultad de frenado por las condiciones climáticas anteriormente señaladas.Cabe consignar que Buses Piedra del Águila hace un mes registró otro accidente, esta vez por falla mec

Arsenal 3 - 1 Manchester City
1 - 0 Rosicky (12)
1 - 1 Beasley (41)
2 - 1 Fabregas (73)
3 - 1 Baptista (85)
It’s true - goals from the Arsenal midfield. Nothing for ages and the four come along in two games. Would that they had shown such accuracy in the months previous. Last night’s performance was not the most dominant attacking-wise, the volume of chances not up to the same level as against West Ham yet we have walked away with three points. And in the end that is all that matters from this particular game. Defensively though, there are still concerns that something is not right. It is almost as if the defensive mentality that full-backs and centre -backs are supposed to have, has gone walk about. During the course of this season, it was mainly thought to be either a lack of confidence or concentration but there seems to be something more fundamental at the bottom of this. Disruption through injuries and suspensions will not have helped but with the growing number of gam
Nicky Henderson's horses are a lot like a Bus. No winners for 32 runners and BANG 2 come in one day. He was of course always going to break his losing sequence but did he have to have 2 winners when I laid them? lol.I lost 1.5 points today and I'm lucky to of gotten off that lightly really. I managed to lay 2 horses IR for 3% when before the off they were both in the 1.8% bracket. I just really cannot get going this month, it's literally one step forward, 2 steps backward. But I do still have 8 days to sort it out and with 5 meetings tomorrow there should be plenty of selections to get stuck into. The basis of my system is speed figures and adjusted speed figures. I've noticed a little trend that quite a few of my winners have come from horses that are trying a new trip. King After, Cerebus, Convinial Spirit, Petrosian to name a few. I've looked at my ratings and it's trying to predict a figure for the new distance. It's obviously not predicting them too well, lol. I'm going to
This post tells you all you wanted to know about BMTC Volvo city busesWhen I showed the photos of these city buses to some of friends in Hyderabad who had not seen these buses, their initial reaction was something like "is it in India?" "It is a city bus - a??" "In Bangalore all city buses are like this??!!!" Indeed, the comfort looks and performance a Volvo offers is not met by any of its competitors in the luxury buses segment. After huge success of Volvo B7R inter-city coaches Volvo launched B7RLE transit buses in late 2005 and Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) was one of the pioneers to use them. The Vehicle body design is that of Volvo 8700 which is its European counter part. The 7 liter rear engine is probably too much for Bangalore's roads and I feel Volvo could have considered B6R instead of B7R for intra-city buses (Both to restrict over speeding and increase fuel economy). The 38 seated coach has 50% of its seats at extremely low level and res

Remember how some people like to hog the grab-poles in the MRT by leaning against them? Now, its even spread to buses. I think this is even more unforgiveable than MRT pole hoggers because its generally a more bumpy ride on the bus, and the bus itself offers much less standing space. In the very same bus, at the same time:One aunty leaning on the grab pole right next to the bus exit. Notice that the 'Push To Stop' button has been blocked by her.And another uncle, is doing the same on the other grab pole next to the exit. (He's also blocking the 'Push To Stop' button.)Trust me, everyone had a hard time exiting the bus.
I went off all sex this week. Hardly interested in the arousing capability of my written word or getting them there, I ploughed along assessing everything up to this point in time pretty much asking myself what on Earth I was trying to accomplish in this wee space or fragment of the cyber Cosmos. This assessment followed a routine week at work, which I spent noting down the frequency of smiles in the workplace. This made me think of one of my previous posts Smiling and Sex, and concluded that smiling is an essential ingredient of everyday life. Forget the new age self help books, and their step-pyramid like life changing recipes. So I decided I'd smile at the stuff that would, in a piecemeal fashion, drain my energy - namely the unsmiling army of workers that I see each day, whose computer monitors become their second friend, who hardly remove their eyes from the screen to utter a Good Morning. They're nice people, but work gets in there like a stubborn stain that won't go away,
Yahoo! News: PARIS (Reuters) - A woman in the southern city of Marseille suffered severe burns when vandals set fire to a bus she was traveling on, a police source said on Saturday.
The attack occurred as France marked the first anniversary of riots that scarred the country's poor suburbs, inhabited largely by immigrants. Vandals have set at least six buses on fire in suburbs around Paris this week in an upsurge of violence ahead of the anniversary, but there have been no injuries.
The police source said an unknown number of people forced their way on to the bus in Marseille at about 9.00 p.m. (1900 GMT) and set fire to it before a 26-year-old woman could escape.
"The woman's life is in danger," the source said.
Three other people needed treatment for smoke inhalation.

The last time I rode a double-decker red bus was in London. To remedy that my friend Marina who was in town for the weekend and I hopped onto one of the double-decker tour buses that drive camera wielding tourists and annoying tour-guides all over Manhattan showing them sites as if it was the last day on earth.Although our tour guide was especially annoying the day was not. It was cold as a mother but the day was a spectacular one for shooting. I wouldn't say that riding a choppy bus thru New York traffic is ideal for photo shooting but it was what it was. As I get the photos ready I'll post them up here on the blog. This one of the UN towards the end of the trip turned out nicely.
Congestion charging (CC) proponents often justify the regressive tax by citing the need to reduce vehicular pollution in city centers. In their campaign to stymie a local CC scheme, Manchester Against Road Tolls (MART) points out that the Manchester City Council's plan singularly fails to tackle the real cause of the city's air pollution: buses. "Buses and indeed any vehicle with a large diesel power unit that repeatedly puts the engine under load - like pulling away from bus stops - emit the two most carcinogenic chemicals known to science, labelled 3-NBA and 1,8-DNP," MART's press release opined. "Buses are also heavy emitters of nitrogen dioxide and general particulates, both of which are respiratory irritants." It does seem odd that Manchester hasn't retired its smoke-belching buses. The city has one of Europe's busiest bus routes (Oxford Road/Wilmslow Road). It was also the first municipalities to introduce the diesel - electric Econo Optare Sol
