US Transportation Secretary Mary Peters unveiled a proposal today to make school bus seat backs four inches taller and to require short buses to begin using shoulder strap seat belts, the AP reports. Peters didn't go so far as to recommend mandated seat belts in all buses, saying local school districts should decide for themselves whether to retrofit their buses. "Our proposed rule would make children safer, put parents at ease and give communities a clearer picture of how to protect students," Peters said in a news release. "It's never too late to learn, especially when it comes to protecting our children." The department will take comments on the proposed rule for the next 60 days.

Two buses, containing mostly women passengers, have been quarantined at the Pekan Ijok police station amidst allegations of phantom voting.The buses were blocked by hundreds of PKR supporters at Bukit Badong, following a half-hour stand off which began at 4pm.During the stand-off, opposition supporters had blocked the buses from leaving the area. The last time I rode a double-decker red bus was in London. To remedy that my friend Marina who was in town for the weekend and I hopped onto one of the double-decker tour buses that drive camera wielding tourists and annoying tour-guides all over Manhattan showing them sites as if it was the last day on earth.Although our tour guide was especially annoying the day was not. It was cold as a mother but the day was a spectacular one for shooting. I wouldn't say that riding a choppy bus thru New York traffic is ideal for photo shooting but it was what it was. Congestion charging (CC) proponents often justify the regressive tax by citing the need to reduce vehicular pollution in city centers. In their campaign to stymie a local CC scheme, Manchester Against Road Tolls (MART) points out that the Manchester City Council's plan singularly fails to tackle the real cause of the city's air pollution: buses. "Buses and indeed any vehicle with a large diesel power unit that repeatedly puts the engine under load - like pulling away from bus stops - emit the two most carcinogenic chemicals known to science, labelled 3-NBA and 1,8-DNP," MART's press release opined. "Buses are also heavy emitters of nitrogen dioxide and general particulates, both of which are respiratory irritants." It does seem odd that Manchester hasn't retired its smoke-belching buses.
