There was a TV interview on Channel 4 news (UK) a couple of nights ago with the Ambassador of PRC government in the UK. I have to say she seemed a very likable person - she was somebody I found very easy to listen to and accept what she said. I guess those are the qualities of a good ambassador of any kind. One of the things she was asked about was whether the PRC government was putting any press

Is its prot0-Stalinist Junta which subscribes to the ideology of 'socialism in one country' being the client state of that other proto-Stalinist State; China. There is something karmic about the recent cyclone that hit the country of Burma/Myanmar. It was headed towards Bangladesh and then suddenly veered right and headed straight for Myanmar.Perhaps it was because all the Buddhist monks the junta jailed in the past year were no longer able to chant in their temples, casting the spells needed to keep the population safe from such a natural disaster.It was typical of such authoritarian regimes to downplay natural disasters, which of course is the greatest test of an autarkic regime. In this case it was first reported that 1000 people were killed, a day later a zero was added to the number;
With the death toll in Myanmar now feared to be more than 100,000, a number of aid organizations have started relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas.World Vision is reporting that it is already providing clothing as well as tarpaulins, blankets, rice and drinking water in the capital, Yangon. I’m not talking about Rambo or even CC. I’m talking about the cyclone that has killed tens of thousands, and left possibly millions homeless (according to the radio reports I heard Tuesday morning).

Quite difficult to understand, after Burma and its regime of military has received pledges of outside help in the human catastrophe following cyclone Nargis, that it still bars aid workers form entering the country. As there was a holiday yesterday, Burma's embassy was closed and not offering visas for aid workers -- quite an unimaginable bureaucratic failure in light of the possibility, that much more than 30,000 people might have been killed and most of the current rice crop devastated. My personal feeling would be NOT to give money to aid organizations; initially harsh for the population affected, but it is very doubtful that any help will reach them and secondly, it further solidifies the hold of the junta on Burma -- which must be broken or suffering on a much larger scale will follow.

Maybe even worse than the tsunami of 2004, a tropical cyclone called Nargis hit Burma with very heavy rainfalls and winds up to 200km/h. As the cyclone was compounded by a storm surge of up to 3 meters in height up the Irawaddy river delta, a very large and flat rice growing region, most of the death toll comes form this flooding, because people were unable to flee the rising water.Burma has had ample warnings of this storm coming, up to a week in advance, but seemingly failed to warn its population of this natural occurrence. It is now feared that the death toll might be even higher than 30,000, some even quoting numbers of possible hundreds of thousands.NASA satellite pictures showing the flooded Iravaddy delta in Burma TNA:"The Thai government has approved a US$100,000 grant to assist

WARNING TO BURMA World's patience wearing thin: UN Situation is not acceptable and unsustainable, Ban Ki-Moon warns Rangoon Visiting United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon yesterday urged the Burmese junta to move forward on democracy and human rights protection as the international community's patience was running out. "I would like again to emphasis that the return to the status quo is not acceptable and is politically unsustainable," he told a press conference. He did not say what would happen if the international community did lose patience but noted the junta should allow opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to engage with the senior junta leaders. The UN secretary-general arrived in Bangkok on Sunday for a three-day official visit to honour His Majesty the King's 80th birthday. He discussed the situation in Burma with Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont during a bilateral meeting. The UN, through special envoy Ibrahim Gambari, has made little progress in persuading the junta lea

December 1 was the 20th World AIDS Day and people around the word celebrated and commemorated the occasion. Speaking to The Irrawaddy by telephone from her hiding place on Friday, Phyu Phyu Thin said that since 2002 the volunteer group has taken care of more than 1,800 persons living with HIV/AIDS throughout the country. This year alone, they have taken in about 600 new persons living with HIV/AIDS. Of those, about 200 patients are now directly under their care, while another 40 patients are receiving antiretroviral (ARV) drugs from their g
Burmese junta leader Snr-Gen Than Shwe's wife Kyaing Kyaing recently visited the celebrated Shit Myet Hna pagoda in her husband's birthplace, Kyaukse, in central Burma, but she wasn't just sightseeing or calling on friends and relatives. The revered site is known as the "Eight Faces" pagoda because it faces eight points of the compass. Kyaing Kyaing is reported to have prayed symbolically there for support from all sides for her beleaguered husband and his despised regime. Kyaing Kyaing and her husband, like many members of the ruling military, are deeply superstitious and rely on astrologers and other soothsayers to advise them. They also indulge in yadaya, a kind of voodoo said to ward off ill-fortune, and are said to have employed its rituals in an occult bid to influence meetings between opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the official appointed by Than Shwe to act as a go-between, retired general Aung Kyi. Than Shwe reportedly even attaches significance to Aung Ky
ASEAN leaders have signed a charter on democracy and human rights in Singapore on Tuesday after much international pressure on ASEAN over the atrocities committed by Burma (Myanmar) over the last few decades, in particular the brutal killings of monks and civilians in the recent pro-democracy nationwide protest in September. Fine. ASEAN, together with the media, can continue to trumpet on the success of ASEAN in getting the democracy and human rights charter signed but as the charter apparently does not comprise any provision for enforcing human rights compliance, the effect of the signing goes to zilch. To quote Mr Sinapan Samydorai, president of Singapore's Think Centre: "They're more into rhetoric than real action. They can talk about human rights, but they can't enforce it." To prove Burma's sincerity in recognising human rights, it has to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi who is the opposition leader of NLD, all, I mean ALL, political prisoners including the protesters in the

Flamboyant Myanmar tycoon Tay Za Monday denounced US sanctions against his airline and other firms which he said would only hurt the people of the impoverished nation of Southeast Asia. US President George W. Bush last month ordered sanctions against seven companies with ties to Myanmar's ruling junta. Tay Za's Air Bagan was among seven firms blacklisted to pile more pressure on the regime after its bloody suppression of pro-democracy protests in September which left 13 dead and thousands locked up. "I hereby condemn the sanctions which were recklessly imposed and only hurt the people of Myanmar," Tay Za told officials, staff and businessmen in a speech for celebrations to mark Air Bagan's third anniversary. "The sanctions are misguided and unfair. Air Bagan Ltd is a legally constituted company with funds earned through 100 percent legitimate means," he said. "No government officials or party outside Htoo Group of companies owns any shares in Air Bagan." The charismatic tycoon
UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations expert on human rights in Myanmar vowed on Wednesday he would not be constrained by the military junta when he visits the country next month to report on the recent crisis. U.N. special rapporteur Paulo Sergio Pinheiro said he believed detentions continued after last month's suppression of demonstrations, which were led by Buddhist monks in several major cities in the impoverished southeast Asian state. "What annoys me is that the repression has not stopped a single moment -- this is what annoys me -- despite all the universal appeals," he told reporters at the United Nations. In a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday, which was made public on Monday, Foreign Minister Nyan Win said Pinheiro could visit Myanmar before a summit of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) opening on November 17. It will be his first visit to the country in four years. "I will ask free access, the secretary general will ask free a
Over the last few weeks, I’ve written a fair amount about the situation in Burma. It now appears as if the situation is at an impasse. After a tumultuous month, the wave of opposition has crested, and what has it led us to? The UN envoy that passed through Burma several weeks ago achieved little, if anything. The new head of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, even admitted to the press that negotiations in Burma were fruitless efforts.
Just a day ago, President Bush spoke openly about the atrocious misdeeds committed by the Burmese regime. That seems sort of odd to me, because sanctions were already pretty severe there to begin with. I can’t really think of any goods sold between the two countries, and the only exchange of money that takes place are the few tourist dollars spent by travelers there.

[singlepic=153,300,170,,right]After writing my previous post about Burma I decided I really wanted to do something. The next day while I was cutting my hair(yes, I cut my own hair), I was looking at my head and thinking about the monks shaved heads. It dawned on me that shaving my heads in solidarity with the Buddhist monks would be a good way to do something. It turned out I was right, I probably had several dozen conversations about my head and Burma. I think I raised a lot of awareness.
When I got the e-mail from the U.S. Campaign for Burma people about the rally in Washington, D.C. I decided to go for it. I spent the few days before the protest thinking about what I wanted to put on my sign and I finally got the idea after seeing an illustration of the Olympic rings with a bullet hole for the last ring...
The Burmese authorities have a new enemy to hunt down—dogs which are roaming Rangoon with pictures of Than Shwe and other regime leaders around their necks. A resident of Shwegondine, Bahan Township, told The Irrawaddy on Friday that she saw a group of four dogs with pictures of the regime’s top generals around their necks. Sightings were also reported in four other Rangoon townships—Tharkayta, Dawbon, Hlaing Tharyar and South Okkalapa. Some sources said the canine protest had started at least a week ago, and was keeping the authorities busy trying to catch the offending dogs. “They seem quite good at avoiding arrest,” laughed one resident. Associating anybody with a dog is a very serious insult in Burma. Spray-painters are also at work, daubing trains with the words “Killer Than Shwe” and other slogans. The above article was reproduced from The Irrawaddy.

The supreme decision-making body of Myanmar is the State Peace and Development Council, whose chairman is Senior Gen. Than Shwe, who is also the commander in chief of the armed forces, the Tatmadaw.
Than Shwe, 74, who serves as both head of state and defense secretary, assumes the full power of the council.
The junta has a Cabinet, but it has no power to make key policy decisions.
During World War II, the Tatmadaw–which was founded and trained by the Imperial Japanese Army–expelled the British Indian Army, and then played a significant role during anti-Japanese campai
Chi sono i Bloggers for Burma? Sono 16 bloggers che vogliono far sentire la loro voce a sostegno di chi lotta pacificamente per la libertà. The following article was reproduced from the website of David Kalgour, former MP of Edmonton-Beaumont, Canada. Several other interesting articles could be found on his website:The Burmese army has burnt an undetermined number of bodies at a crematorium sealed off by armed guards northeast of Rangoon over the past seven days, ensuring that the exact death toll in the recent pro-democracy protests will never be known. The secret cremations have been reported by local people who have seen olive green trucks covered with tarpaulins rumbling through the area at night and watched smoke rising continuously from the furnace chimneys. They say they have watched soldiers in steel helmets blocking off roads to the municipal crematorium and threatening people who poke their heads out of windows overlooking the roads after the 10pm curfew. Their accounts have been volunteered to international officials and aid workers in Rangoon, Burma’s main city. The consensus in the foreign community is
There has been enormous pressure on the United Nations from the world for more harsh actions against the Burmese military regime. The article reported on Agence France-Presse (AFP) mentioned that despite worldwide protests in support of Burma’s pro-democracy movement, any sanction resolution would probably face a veto from China and Russia, the former being the main backer of the junta all these years. The reason given would be the turmoil in Burma is an internal affair that does not represent a threat to regional or international peace and security.Although theoretically what happened in Burma will not affect the world in terms of peace and security, it is imperative to note that according to the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it seemed that there have been serious violations of the chapter: Article 4. No one shall be held in slavery or servitude; slavery and the slave trade shall be prohibited in all their forms. Article 5. No one shall be subjected to
The Associated Press RANGOON, Burma -- Residents of Burma's biggest city, Rangoon, are keeping up a low-key resistance against the country's military regime, harassing soldiers by tossing rocks at them at night, student activists said Monday. Security forces have responded to the activities, which have taken place over the past two to three days, by detaining the rock throwers they catch after curfew, they said. In some cases, members of the families of those detained -- including children -- have also been detained, the activists said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of arrest. No figures were available on the number of people engaging in such activities or how many may have been detained. The reports came as the government has announced numbers of those detained in connection with the anti-regime protests of the past few weeks. Burma authorities also said weapons had been seized from Buddhist monasteries and announced dozens of new arrests, despite global outrag

It seems the protests in Burma are over for now. It’s really frustrating to see the “Coalition of the willing” sit by and do nothing when a country’s people scream for democracy, while they invade others which are at best reluctant. It’s even harder to see China sticking with it’s “non interference” policy, although they are happy to interfere when someone else wants to. With a human rights record like China’s it’s no surprise really, that country’s government dumbfounds me. Regardless of the frustration there in reality these two powers are not really the ones best to target for action. One thing is for sure, although everyone seems to blame someone else in one way or another, but no one doing the blaming can say their hands are clean on the issue.

Seminal readers, how do you feel about the situation in Burma? What action (if any) should the U.S. take? I feel conflicted. Obviously, the U.S. has a awful track record of promoting democracy abroad. However, the Burmese people clearly are behind this effort, unlink some of the other recipients of our “gift” of democracy. What kind of support is appropriate? Personally, I support divestment, diplomacy, and international pressure on allies like China to get something done.
