      bumpy times
Dunno why recently I keep bumping into old friends. JC friends, army friends, former colleagues, former projectmates, coursemates. Most of them I haven't seen for a long time, while others, can be a matter of weeks or months. The first word seems to always be "AYE!" (not the acronym for Ayer Rajah Expressway), then we would start chatting on the spot. Or it could be a SMS that says "I'm behind you

Vista Rollout - why it was bumpy
An interesting post on MaximumPC sheds some light on the reasons why the Microsoft Vista rollout process was flawed. It includes some benchmarks testing between XP, Vista and Vista SP1, plus some feedback from Microsoft staff giving an insight into how the problems arose and what’s being done. Of course, it basically boils down to an [...]

Bumpy ride on your face? Could be Acne vulgaris… !
What is Acne vulgaris :- Acne vulgaris (commonly called Acne) is a skin disease, caused by changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous gland). Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in noninflammatory forms. Acne lesions are commonly referred to as pimples, spots, or zits. Acne is most common during adolescence, affecting more than 85% of teenagers, and frequently continues into adulthood. For most people, acne diminishes over time and tends to disappear, or at least decrease, after one reaches his or her early twenties. There is, however, no way to… Continue reading

It was a Bumpy Ride, But A Good Landing
Since I know some of you have been compulsively checking my site all day wondering if I'm still alive, (you know who you are) or maybe concerned that this whole trip to Connecticut was a sham just to string you along (you know who you are), I thought I'd be a peach and give you a few morsels from my trip so far. It started with a bumpy ride. I had to take two planes to reach my final

It's Going to be a Bumpy Ride
The artist is Zubaren and the piece is entitled, "St. Casilda."It can be found at El Prado in Madrid. It was painted in the time of 1638-42. It is religious in nature but the artist used presumably a friend as model. The dress is current to the day.St. Casilda was daughter to the Muslim king of Toledo and carried bread to the to captured Christians. Once caught, the bread hidden in her skirts when unwrapped, had been turned into roses.Well the rains seems mostly gone, and its soggy as you might expect. It's also gloomy and dark which is starting to wear on me for sure. I suffer to a degree from SAD. I got a start on my poor craft room. What a mess. You see, we stopped taking extraneous things to the basement, because it tends to be damp, so my room got to be the receptacle of everything th

Print-on-Demand: Exciting but Bumpy New Road
Though by profession I am a software developer, like most developers I am also a voracious software consumer.  My job requires me to use many different software tools, and I also use software to automate and manage many aspects of my personal life. So naturally when it came time to produce a photo book for my parents' joint 75th birthdays, I jumped on the new wave of "Print-On-Demand" (POD) book publishing.  With POD, you create your own book in a word processor or desktop publishing program, and then you can publish one or many professionally-bound copies of your new hardcover masterpiece for a very reasonable fee.  (more…)

      Bumpy Trips to Delhi
I’ve been to New Delhi 3 times in 4 years. All the 3 times, the flights were bumpy, all the way from Kuala Lumpur to New Delhi.Yes, ALL THE WAY. Turbulence all the time.In my first trip, I was 7 months pregnant. The seatbelt sign was switched on all the time. I need to pee, but was advised to sit down, until I couldn’t hole it any more. Hey! 5.5 hours, how to hold???In my second and the last trips, the seatbelt sign was switched on 70% of the time. Drinks are hard to be kept on the table without spilling. If we take statistics, it is 100% bumpy. Caution: small sample of n=3. :P

Hamish McRae: When you look at China all you see is growth, but a bumpy road lies ahead
From The IndependentThe annual Davos symposium – that extravagant annual meeting of business leaders, politicians and academics in the Swiss resort – has a younger sibling. It starts today in the Chinese port city of Dalian. But, rather than collect together the heads of the world's largest companies, it seeks to bring together those from the fastest-growing.Such a meeting could, in theory, take place anywhere but it is happening in the world's fastest-growing country, China, and in what I am told is China's fastest-growing city. Dalian is a pretty place, a commercial centre but also a seaside resort and, if having this new "summer Davos" happen here does nothing else, it will at least open the eyes of the visitors to China's astounding growth story. That story – growth running at more than 11 per cent, the economy about to pass Germany in size – has been told so often that it is now widely appreciated. But what I, at least, had not appreciated until the past few days is the

Traditional medicine modernization - still a long, bumpy road ahead
Interfax - As drug discovery options run dry with fewer and fewer synthetic lead compounds and structure-based medicines being discovered, multinationals are increasingly turning to traditional Chinese medicines as a new source. TCM modernization, the identification of an active ingredient in a herbal remedy that results in the mass production and marketing of a drug with a detailed pharmacokinetic profile, is the latest buzzword in the pharmaceutical industry, both home and abroad. However, medical researchers have told Interfax that China’s TCM modernization is still in its early stages, and that a lack of standards and technology are inhibiting the modernization of TCMs. Bottlenecks in TCM development “There is no standard to assess the quality and efficacy of TCMs,” said Tang Senping, a senior researcher from the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica. “So many researchers have to explore ways for the TCM sector to modernize.” A lack of a set of standard

      bumpy but beautiful
River Trip (Day 4) The day started out clear enough, but a bit chilly. Cold, actually. And then it turned downright dreary by the time we neared the "big" rapid. Drops started falling. Again. We pulled the boats up and scouted what lie ahead. There weren't as many enormous rocks showing as there were last time we ran it, but the holes they made now were nothing to sneeze at. On Bended, Bumpy Knee
Finally! After more than a week of trying to reschedule the knee surgery set for March 23, the surgeon's office called back yesterday.  A fella can only leave so many messages before he starts to feel neglected and avoided...So now, it's set for April 27.  It's really no big thing... I had an operation known as a "Trillat Procedure" done in 1983.  Basically, it involves shaving off the head of the tibia (shin bone) with the south end of the kneecap tendon attached, moving it over a click or two, then screwing it into place.  This is done to improve tracking of the kneecap when you bend your leg.Well, the kneecap in question was removed in 1985.  So for 24 years I've been walking around with an orthopedic screw in the head of my shin bone.  And it's started to attract company! That bump isn't the head of the screw... it's the "bone" that has grown up around it over the past couple decades.  By itself, painless.  But whack it on the dashb
