BumpTop has been around for a very long time but I was really surprised when I found out that it is still in Private Beta! I discovered that after visiting BumpTop earlier today.
BumpTop is really cool. I don’t know how they do it but those folks over at BumpTop have developed an amazing desktop...

I have recently got to know about Bumptop. This is a company that promises to revolutionise the way you interact with your desktop. I’m sure most of us are bored with the usual boring desktop screen, and would be willing to try something new! - I’m definately up for it!
As from the video I’ve seen [...]
Bumptop is a new and interactive way to manage and declutter your computer’s desktop. You can watch a quick 20-second rap video that gives you a glimpse of it in action (via PopMech), or a longer (7 minute), more serious demonstration video below that. Bumptop’s website HERE.

A year ago the BumpTop virtual desktop software left many people in an "I want it" frame of mind. I was surely one of those people as the demonstration showed files being thrown around the desktop just as you would in real life. You could crumple icons up like a piece of paper, sprawl pictures across a desk, and organize everything into tidy stacks with just a few clicks. So now here we are, a year later, and we don’t have this in our hands. Don’t worry, the project is still very much alive as we saw at at the TED conference: I still have a hard time comprehending whether this would be useful for me when organizing the things on my desktop. It’s one of those things that has an amazing demonstration, but can it be put to practical use? One thing that bothers me a little bit is that you have to identify your files by the icons, since there are no filenames being displayed for them. I guess that they could go the route of a real desktop and allow preview
This is a very nice prototype of a future desktop known as Bumptop. It makes your normal desktop and icons into a real life desktop where you can organise, arrange, tidy and select your default icons as if they were actually on your workspace desktop. A must see!Bumptop Prototype
