Does a new warning label make the seat safe?Last week's "recall" of about 1 million South African-made Bumbo "baby sitter" seats has parents fuming. The recall was announced following 28 reports of children falling out of the seats that had been placed on tabletops. At least three skull fractures were reported. But like many recall campaigns officially sanctioned by the U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Bumbo effort is little more than a lukewarm publicity campaign, critics say. That's because, like many recalls, it isn't what most people think of when they hear the word "recall." The seats are not being called back for retrofitting or disposal. Instead, parents are being asked to contact Bumbo to get a new safety sticker. The sticker cautions parents not to leave their child unattended and to use the seat only at ground level. But some parents say the seats are not safe even when used on the floor.Link to complete story: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/10/bumbo_

Bumbo seat, sold by Bumbo International is quite popular amongst parents.
The bottom of the children’s seat is round and flat with a diameter of about 15 inches. It is constructed of a single piece of molded foam and comes in various bright and attractive colours.
The seat has leg holes and seat back that wraps completely around the child - very comfy looking. It is quite expensive, that’s why I’ve never bought any.
Recently there is a recall by CPSC. The hazard is described as follow:
If the seat is placed on a table, countertop, chair, or other elevated surface, young children can arch their backs, flip out of the Bumbo seat, and fall onto the floor, posing a risk of serious head injuries.
The incidents were:
CPSC has received 28 reports of young children falling out of the Bumbo Baby Sitter seat, including three skull fractures, which occurred when children fell out of chairs that had been placed on tables.

News yesterday of yet another child product recall, this time for the Bumbo chair. We’ve used the Bumbo chair for years and it is a great product. It allows babies to sit up before they can do it themselves. Thing 3 loves to sit in his Bumbo and watch his brothers play. It’s like he’s one of the big boys.
The reason for the recall is not due to some product defect. Rather, it is due to misuse, and frankly, lack of common sense on the part of some parents. While the Bumbo is good for keeping babies “stuck” in the chair, it isn’t fool proof, and babies can sometimes get loose. It clearly says this when you buy the product. Not to make light of serious injuries which have occurred, but it seems obvious not to put a Bumbo on a table or counter, or anywhere the baby could get hurt if he falls out. If you put the Bumbo on a carpeted floor, the baby won’t get hurt when he falls out.
So the company will now put large warning labels on the Bu
Over 1 million Bumbo Seats recalled!Basically these Bumbo seats are being recalled because of a handful of stupid people that put their babies in these seats in high places. Babies, curious in nature, lean over and fall down...several have ended up with skull fractures. So, in essence...bumbo seat - GOOD...people - BAD.So, millions of children that have foudn relief from reflux thanks to these seats will be robbed of such goodness because of a few people that didn't think before placing their Bumbo seats at a height.
The popular Bumbo Baby Seats are getting a recall as they are potentially dangerous for children, over one million of the seats will be recalled which have been made by Bumbo International of South Africa. The Consumer Product Safety Commission said that the reason for this voluntary recall is due to the fact that if the seat is placed on a table, chair or countertop, children could arch their backs then flip out of the Bumbo seat and could cause serious head injuries if they hit the floor.
The CPSC says has said that they have received 28 reports of children falling out of the seats and hurting themselves, In fact three children sustained skull fractures when the seat had been placed on tables.
The seats that were sold from August 2003 through October 2007 and were sold by Babies R Us, Kmart, Sears, Target, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart, USA Babies and many others, and cost $40.
The CPSC has said that the Bumbo seats should never be placed on a table or other high places, and should never leav
It was recently reported in local news that a baby arched his back enough to dislodge him from the Bumbo Baby Sitter he was in while atop a kitchen table and the child toppled backward off the table sustaining a near fatal head injury. The Bumbo has become a very popular first-time seat for babies but if warning labels are disregarded, it can prove to be very dangerous for your child.
One of Bumbo biggest advantages is it allows a soft pre-formed back support for babies as young as three months depending on when they can support their head. The suggested age of use is between six weeks and fourteen months.
One of the unique aspects of the Bumbo design is the fact that it has no safety straps. The baby is secured but the soft concave cup design of the seat that offers critical back support and keeps the baby snug in the seat. The Manufacturer warning labels heed:
Never leave your baby unattended. Never use on a raised or uneven surface, as a car seat, in a bath or in other water. Bumbo

This award-winning chair is for 6 week - 14 month old babies. However, since it is only one size, it won’t always be a snug fit (my friend has one). It is also pricey for a piece of foam ($40).
IdeaSpark*: They should make another inflatable version, with a solid base. This way, it will always provide a cozy fit, and can continue to accommodate your growing child.

After having numerous friends tell me that the Bumbo Baby Sitter is the best baby product they've bought for their child, I finally decided to give it a try. Kaitlyn isn't use to sitting up on her own, so i think it startled her a bit, but then she really enjoyed it! She sat on the ground close to her 2 year old brother, and watched him play with his blocks. I know she can't wait to start playing with him, she just LOVES watching his every move! The Bumbo Baby Sitter allows her to keep up with her big brother for now, and that definitely keeps her happy! A happy baby means a happy mommy! So, I definitely give it my two thumbs up!!!"The Bumbo Baby Sitter is a revolutionary new concept with world wide patent rights, uniquely designed according to the baby’s posture to seat babies independently in an upright sitting position, from as young as 3 months up to an age of approximately 14 months depending on the individual development of the child, thereby providing a snug and cozy enviro
