With last week's bounce still in effect I took a look at the bullish percents to gauge how long this may run. It was a bit of a mixed bag. While all three key bullish percent indices generated bullish signals, only the S&P breached declining resistance, as defined by closing price, to suggest it is a true bull rally. It could change today - although results from American Express (AXP) won't help, e

May 21st saw the bullish percents of the Nasdaq and S&P follow that of the Dow with a bearish cross of the 5-day EMA. The S&P compounded the loss with a break of rising support connected by March-April dips using closing price. There's a well defined bullish, or ascending, channel that has been guiding the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) higher. A breakdown in the channel might very well mark the end to the upward trend in place since March. The Dow just can't seem to get, and stay, above 13,000. It's been trying for a few weeks now and just keeps failing. If it can't go any higher, might the Dow go lower? That's wha

Economic News USD Yesterday, the greenback saw mixed results as it was in a bearish trend versus its major currency rivals during the first half of the day. Later on throughout the day it managed to gain some bullish momentum, the most notable and volatile loss in the first half of day for the USD was 111 pips against the EUR. The pair eventually evened out mid-day to close at 1.5531.May 6th was a slow news day for the U.S. economy with Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech the only scheduled event of relevance. In his speech, Fed Chairman Bernanke spoke about the need of finding new ways to combat homeowner foreclosures. As most of the important news came from Europe and Canada yesterday, the Dollar traded largely off of investor speculation,Today at 12:30 GMT, quarterly Nonfarm Productivity
Although not of immediate concern, some of the bullish percents are about to enter bear market (but not bull market) top territory. If January lows represent the start of a bear market then these breadth indicators should top soon. If the current rally is a continuation of the cyclical bull market then there is room for another 15-20% of gain (perhaps as much as 50% for the Nasdaq Bullish Percents). How this impacts on the market remains to be seen, but the likely outcome would be a negative divergence between breadth indicators and the market; indices make new highs as bullish percents fall. Natural gas stocks remain red hot despite the weakness in the broader market this morning. Energy stocks, in particular, are trending higher. One stock within the energy sector worth looking at is Arena Resources (ARD). The company is a oil and gas exploration and production company.ARD has been consolidating its rally through 2007. The stock dropped at the beginning of the year, rebounded, dropped again, and rebounded once more. Along the way, ARD traced a bullish wedge. ARD is breaking out of the bullish wedge today with a big rally above horizontal resistance at $45.

Solar stocks are blazing higher, bucking the weakness in the broader market. First Solar (FSLR) is a leader within the sector.I've been trading FSLR for over a year, but it's been a while since I profiled the stock on this site. When trading any of the solar stocks, it's important to remember that solar is an alternative to traditional energy sources like oil and natural gas. When trading solar stocks, the prices of traditional energy sources are really all that matter. Alternative energy sources are increasingly competitive and attractive when traditional energy prices are high. So, right now, with crude oil at $110 and natural gas at $10, solar plays are extremely attractive. If these prices go higher, so too will FSLR and other alternative energy plays. Conversely, if crude oil and natu
There is a sense things are getting a little toppy in the Bullish Percents. The S&P Bullish Percents have moved to a 'Sell' trigger at a resistance level marked by December highs. Unlike December, the S&P is above its 50-day MA, so it may simply be a blip on the road to higher levels. But it is a warning sign: Bullish Percents for the Dow and Nasdaq were flat and haven't yet marked future weakness.
Natural gas has been quietly moving higher this year, in the shadow of record crude oil prices. Business Times - 05 Apr 2008 Still bullish on Singapore property DESPITE the US subprime crisis, which will have a cyclical impact, Liew Mun Leong remains bullish on Singapore's property market in the medium term. 'Main street America is suffering from the sins and mistakes of Wall Street,' he says. 'And when main street gets hit, that will affect Asia, we can't run away from it.'However, Singapore's property market has some strong underpinnings, he maintains. Most importantly, the drivers of Singapore's property market have changed in recent years. 'The rise in property prices since 2002 is no longer due to domestic policy changes such as the liberalisation of CPF and the HDB sub-sale policy.'It is driven by the remaking of Singapore. Singapore as a global city, as a gateway to Asia, the

One of the sectors that is making waves in 2008 is the Agricultural Commodities. Emerging markets are booming and so are their consumption. With growth comes a change in lifestyle, diet being an important part of it. The rising middle-class in these emerging markets especially China and India are now calling for both higher quantities and a better quality of food. With industrialization and urban sprawl taking over, Chinese and Indian farmers are continually asked to produce more crops from shrinking amounts of land. They also have fewer farm workers as many have left villages to seek their fortune in more established cities. If you add environmental pressures to the mix, you've got an agricultural situation that's even more challenging. It's estimated that one out of every three dollars ea
Yesterday's losses weren't enough to prevent a bullish cross of the 5-day EMA for the Nasdaq Bullish Percents. This follows earlier crosses for the S&P and Dow bullish percents. What is clear from these charts are the bullish divergences between January and current lows for the bullish percents with respect to the parent indices. Basically, more stocks are on point-n-figure buy signals now than back in January, even with the indices making new lower closing lows. What is important going forward will be the need to break declining (closing) resistance initiated in January for the Dow, S&P and Nasdaq. The Nasdaq looks best placed to challenge, although the Dow is closest to the major moving averages (20-day and 50-day MAs). Thursday probably won't reveal too much going into the long weekend,

The indices were thrown back into the quagmire of the past 2-month consolidations as the Bullish Percents flipped negative once more. It was interesting to see the DOW hold 12,200 as support:With a comparable support level (1,324) visible for the S&P:But resistance, rather than support, was clearer for the Nasdaq:Given the position of the bullish percents, should one view them as bullish or bearish? Bears will look to the lack of oversold conditions in the bullish percents as an opportunity to push stocks trying to lead a rally out lower. Bulls will see increasing strength from stocks posting new breakouts on point-n-figure charts as diverging from the weakness in the indices. As fewer and fewer stocks drag on the indices, the quicker - and sharper - the resulting rally will be. I hold to
The Nasdaq Bullish Percent turned bearish with a drop below its 5-day EMA. If this weakness was to represent itself in the index I would look for a new closing low for February (but not necessarily a break of the month's intraday lows). However, the index does sit close to a break of declining resistance connecting January, and both February reaction highs - a big day this week would break through this resistance and likely negate the 'sell' trigger in the Nasdaq Bullish Percent:Better was the leading action in the Dow Bullish Percent. It finished Monday at 33% having managed a new reaction high for the month. This strength filtered through to the index Monday when it made its first break of the two reaction highs for February. Look for this strength to continue with a further push above 1
I'm proud that we've been so bullish on gold over the past six months. We've been pounding the table and it's proven to be a great trade. We first wrote about gold in this post. We've come a long way since then with spot gold trading near $950 an ounce.Look to the streetTRACKS Gold Trust (GLD) to trade gold. It's an equity-like exchange traded fund (ETF) that is backed by the physical metal. It's like owning gold but through a stock-like vehicle. The GLD and, indeed, the spot market are breaking out from a short-term bullish triangle. It's a perfectly symmetrical bullish triangle.Look for the triangle to lead spot GOLD to above $1,000 an ounce!
The Bullish Percents have turned bullish (again!); although the Nasdaq Bullish Percent have been bullish since January 24th. The Dow is interesting as 12,200 looks to be support based on closing price. The S&P struggles a little and this could reverse as a whipsaw signal - but for now it is bullish.McClellan Oscillator holds on to bullish signalBut indices remain vulnerable as recent gains fall well short of the prior week's selling. Double bottom confirmations will need 5%+ gains in the indices, which given the gains we have seen over the last few days could take a while.
There is one stock for today, Contango Oil and Gas (MCF) available in the free section of my main website and made available to readers of my newsletter. As for the markets it is still a waiting game to close last Tuesday's gap breakdowns, although the 20-day MAs are likely to get in the way first. As a sidenote, there is an interesting divergence at play in the Percentage of Stocks above the 50-day MAs. When the market bottomed in January only 15% of Nasdaq stocks were above their 50-day MA. This rose to 26% as the market made a new closing low for February. This divergence is further supported by the bullish divergences in the Ultimate Oscillator and MACD trigger line. Also look at how a negative divergence played out during the October top. Trade my Stock Picks at
Wednesday's selling - the third day of selling in a row - has started to pressurize the Bullish Percents and the validity of the January bottom. The Nasdaq bottom remains healthy and looks to be part of a bullish retest of prior lows. The Dow Bullish Percents have breached their 5-day EMA (bearish), but remain in deep oversold territory. More worrying is a similar breach of the 5-day EMA for the S&P Bullish Percents, but unlike the Dow, the crossover occurred away from oversold levels. Watch for the S&P to lead a break to the downside and through January lows. Both Nasdaq and NYSE McClellan Oscillators finished in positive territory which is bullish (just!).
The year 2007 saw good times roll out for the india real estate sector. Big-size IPOs, a slew of government measures and FIIs helped in giving a much needed facelift to the sector. Clearly, realty hogged all the limelight and even high interest rates failed in dampening the spirits. Looking ahead, what’s in store for the property market? Will the going continue to be as good or is there a bumpy ride ahead? SundayET spoke to some industry experts to get an idea on what to expect from realty 2008.
Last week's rally was only the start of a move up. Here's how leading money managers suggest you can take advantage of the market's bounce back. By Michael BrushLast week's impressive rebound in stocks was more than just a head fake. I see seven reasons why the reversal was the start of a bullish move in stocks.A safe way to play this turnaround is to get broad market exposure, using mutual funds and exchange-traded funds. For more oomph, build positions in companies that have the right characteristics for the slower economic growth ahead. To find those stocks, I picked the brains of several managers who have excellent records at diversified domestic-stock mutual funds. Before we go there, here's why I see better times ahead for stocks:Reason No. 1: The smart money is positioned for gains. There are many ways to read the minds of the smart money on Wall Street. Jason Goepfert, who runs a great Web site called SentimenTrader.com that offers a cornucopia of investor-sentiment gauges,
Last week’s trading session ended on a tremendous high note for the greenback as it steadily gained against 14 of the 16 major currency pairs. As economic data continued to surprise forecasters, the dollar gained on its major counterparts, going so far as to post record gains, not seen since late 2004 against the EUR. When trading came to a close on Friday, the dollar found itself under the 1.45 support level, a level most thought was far from being reached.
The unexpected positive results originated from a host of US economic data begining early last week, ahead of the Tuesday December 11th interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Most were convinced that the rate cuts would be the driving force in amending dollar positions, instead the change began on Thursday December 13th, as a wide range of Retail and PPI numbers were released far and above the anticipated marks. The dollar then began its move, gaining on the GBP, CHF, JPY and EUR especially, posting its biggest single da
The recent talk by the UAE of possibly repegging their currency to a basket rather than the dollar makes me bullish on the GCC region and GCC stocks. By James Altucher I got into a fistfight in a bar the other day. There was blood everywhere. I got glass splinters in my face. The other guy might still be in a coma. I'm still wearing the white bracelet they put on me when they checked me in for "observation."This is how I feel every day when I battle the bears who participate with me on an email list made up of investors and traders. The wall of worry is huge and seemingly insurmountable. But here are a few bricks for the wall of hope. 1. Private equity. There's roughly a trillion dollars sloshing around in the private-equity world, including the money that banks would lend to close any major purchases. With Blackstone buying Hilton at 16 times cash flows and the average purchase now coming in around 11 to 13 times cash flows, it opens up an entire universe of stocks that can be takeover targets. Possible candidates include Macy's and Wyndham. 2. Retail investing. The retail investor still has not gotten back into the game. The

A bullish harami pattern is considered by many chartists to be a potential reversal of a downward trend. However, most resources I've consulted recommend a positive confirmation before buying based on this pattern. My own testing of the canned Stockfetcher Bullish Harami filter confirms that using the pattern by itself does not yield acceptable results. For anyone who doesn't know, a bullish harami is a simple two bar pattern that looks like this. (Click on the picture below for a closer look at my low budget graphic):Alright, so we think we need some sort of confirmation before buying based on a bullish harami pattern. Or do we? Can a Bullish Harami be a buyable pattern by itself in certain situations? The purpose of this post is to share some filter modifications I came up with in Stockfetcher to take their canned bullish harami filter and add conditions to try to make it profitable. All of these filter modifications require that the bullish harami just occurred and that the second
