'Twenty-five years after Reagan's Star Wars speech' - Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists
Twenty-five years after Reagan's Star Wars speech By David Wright and Lisbeth Gronlund | 1 April 2008 On March 23, 1983, President Ronald Reagan made his famous Star Wars speech, announcing his plan to develop a missile defense system that would make nuclear weapons "impotent and obsolete." His vision of a "shield that could protect us from nuclear missiles just as a roof protects a family from the rain" was both seductive and audacious. It was seductive because it offered an easy answer to the omnipresent threat of a massive Soviet nuclear attack at a time when the Soviets and the United States maintained 60,000 nuclear warheads between them. It especially appealed to those who believed in the supremacy of U.S. science and technology but did not understand technical issues. At the sa

Chordoma is a rare bone tumor at the base of the skull, in the vertebra, or in the area of the tailbone. Only about 300 cases are diagnosed in the U.S. each year. While most people with chor- doma have no other family members with the disease, rare occurrences of multiple cases within families have been documented. This suggests that some people may be genetically predisposed to develop chordoma. Because genetic or hereditary risk fac- tors for chordoma may exist, scientists are searching for genes involved in the development of this tumor. NCI is seeking families with two or more relatives with chordoma to par- ticipate in this study. Participants will complete a questionnaire, provide a blood sample, and undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans. ...

Getting Started With Penny Stocks: Over The Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB) and Pink sheets
Over The Counter Bulletin Board stocks (OTCBB) and the Pink Sheets are the two types of penny stocks you will encounter. The main difference between the two is that OTCBB stocks are required to file with the SEC and the pink sheet stocks are not. Some traders refuse to trade pink sheets because of this, those traders are missing out on some great opportunities. Even Warren Buffet has been known to look for undervalued companies in these markets.Beware, trading in the OTCBB and Pink Sheets is not for everyone. Often the stocks are illiquid and have a large spread between bid and ask. There are also a lot of companies that are completely worthless and will try and masquerade as great companies while diluting their shares. Another worry about these stocks is the fraud involved or “pump and dump” schemes where traders or company insiders have their stock “talked up” on bulletin boards or in chat rooms. The posters make unrealistic statements about where the company and the price pe

It’s been a long time since Vancouver suffered any blows to real estate prices, and many young speculators are cajoled by the same headlines from prior bubbles. Langley Financial Planning revived a precious post from the Vancouver Housing Blog, who had amassed a collection of newspaper headlines just prior to the last 2 housing collapses. Here are my favorites: “To those who are waiting for Vancouver house prices to collapse, I can only advise them not to hold their breath . . . Unless there is a major recession or significant depopulation, house prices are unlikely to drop significantly.” - Jerry Jackman, VP Royal Lepage, November 18, 1988 in the Vancouver Sun. (In 1989, prices started to drop - with an eventual 30% or so drop. Real prices did not attain these heights again for 58 quarters, or around 15 years.) “The whole world wants Vancouver because everybody is moving here now and everything points up, up, up.” - Realtor David Goodman, December, 19

Jungle Bulletin - Cheap Canadian Stocks, Free Will, Universal Life Insurance and TSX Group
Norm Rothery reveals a list of Canadian stocks that Benjamin Graham might like. Construct a will for free online. A quite mathematically detailed and negative critique of Canadian Universal Life Insurance programs. TSX Group will have to compete with a new trading system in 2008. I’m not pleased about this announcement as I hold shares in TSX Group. A discussion group is happening here.

Bush is Satan Bulletin on Myspace
Today I received a bulletin message on Myspace from someone I accepted as a friend a few months back and I was appalled at what I read:   Now what was even more interesting was the link at the bottom pointed to Dennis Kucinich’s Myspace profile…something about impeaching Bush. You can read for yourself.  What caught me off guard with the bulletin was calling President Bush - Satan. Of course, this is not a new tactic; We have all seen the Cindy Sheehan groupies with signs insinuating the same nonsense and rhetoric.    Now this person either has a degree in liberal idiocy or is completely uniformed about the dangers of Ahmadinejad. It’s people like this that give me so much to write about in this blog.  Thank you. Oh, and yes I did remove him from my buddy list.  Technorati Tags: liberal, liberalism, conservative, myspace

The Bulletin: Online Fundraising: Advantage, DemocratsExcerpt:"Where does this leave conservatives in the short term? Joe Trippi, the mastermind behind Howard Dean's online success, thinks it'll be years before conservatives turn the corner and catch up to liberals in terms of online activism and fundraising - particularly because left-leaning Democrats are off to such a strong start. But Trippi's confident it will eventually happen, just as conservatives mastered direct mail and took over talk radio. "There's no doubt in my mind Republicans will figure out how to become a powerhouse on the Internet," he told me."http://www.thebulletin.us/site/news.cfm?newsid=18200098&BRD=2737&PAG=461&dept_id=576361&rfi=6Alex

A MySpace Bulletin from IAVAIraq and Afghanistan Veterans of AmericaDate: Apr 13, 2007 11:57 AMIn yet another Band-Aid solution to our troop shortage, Defense Secretary Gates announced yesterday that soldiers will be serving 15-month tours in Iraq, instead of just one year.First and foremost, this policy will deal a tremendous blow to our active-duty soldiers and their families, who have already sacrificed so much in this war. No matter how you cut it, 15 months is an excruciatingly long time to be away from one's spouse and children. It means you miss some occasions - like your child's birthday, or Christmas -- for two years in a row. These extensions are also a terrible hit on our military readiness.Secretary Gates, in his briefing yesterday, lauded the troops and their families for their commitment and sacrifice. But courage and commitment aren't replacements for training and rest. They are also no replacement for the missing equipment that we need, both in Iraq and here at

One or more polar bear regions are also being reviewed by the USF&WS due to the Kerry Amendment to the Marine Mammal Protection Act. Bulletin From:Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of AmericaDate: Mar 30, 2007 2:25 PMDear IAVA Supporter,The Walter Reed fiasco was a travesty, but it helped to bring some much-needed attention to veterans' issues and Congress has really begun to step up. With our Online Army of supporters behind us - civilians, veterans, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters - we really can create and sustain meaningful change. Take a minute to invite your friends to join us.IAVA has been working to make sure veterans are represented in the media, with appearances on CNN, PBS, MSNBC, Fox News and more, and has been working with lawmakers in Washington to make sure real steps are taken to help our veterans. To keep the pressure on, we need you to help us grow our grassroots membership base by inviting
