The Chair of Bulgaria's State Agency for Tourism Aneliya Krushkova announced the numbers last week. The new statistics show that Bulgarias popularity for international visitors and investors continues to be strong.

The Bulgarian property market is still buoyant and looks set to grow even further. It seems there is no better time than now to invest in Balkan bricks and mortar. Despite this positive forecast, many first time buyers remain reluctant to actually put down roots in Bulgaria. This could be due to preconceptions about the country which include, fear of the language barrier, its reputation for being

Although I heard my share of "I'm bored" when the kids were younger, it wasn't long before I never heard that phrase uttered again. How did I solve it? Well... by accident really. Every time my kids say "I'm bored... what's there to do?" My overly-excited answer tends to go something like this;

The fate of the Bulgarian Jews
Artist rendition of the Jewish Diaspora
The history of Jews in Bulgaria predates both that of the Bulgars and the Slavs in the region. Jews formed a vibrant community during the Middle Ages, and were respected by many of the ruling leaders of the day, one of the Tsars even married a Jewish woman who later became known as Queen Theodora. The largest part of the Bulgarian Jewish community before the 15th century belonged to the Byzantine (Romaniot) Jewish rite. Only a minority spoke Bulgarian. The Romaniots had their own customs and even maintained a special prayer book, which eventually was replaced by the Sephardi prayer book. The largest influx of Jews to the Balkans began after 1492, when they were driven away from Spain. At this poi

Last night I watched a documentry that made me feel incredible anger towards healthcare in Bulgaria and sympathy for the poor little “damaged” children who have to endure it. 75 children living in an orphanage treated more like animals. Actually, animals get better treatment than these little defenseless souls. They are not taught love, affection. They are simply there to be fed and to be kept clean (although the living conditions are not that great either). Many of them are in such a bad state they can’t even communicate, instead they sit on their own all day staring into oblivion rocking back and forth on their chair or banging their head against it.
There are two types of people in there, the bedbound and “the walkers” (as the carers so nicely puts it). Those who are bedbound, their life is pretty much over because their independence disappears and they rely totally on the staff, more often than not, ending up in an early grave because they are simply n

“How difficult is the property purchase process in Bulgaria?
Acquiring property in Bulgaria is a simple and straightforward process. But foreign non-residents cannot acquire freehold land directly, but only purchase a structure (apartment, a condo unit, etc.) on a plot of land. However on November 2, 2006, the Bulgarian cabinet decided that foreigners in Bulgaria will be able to buy and inherit property. The changes will take place seven years after membership into the EU in January 2007, i.e. in 2014. “

Outrageous. Shocking. It can’t happen in Germany but it did anyway. A Bulgarian woman left the competition’s behinds behind in Munich yesterday and won the coveted title of Most Beautiful Behind in the World.
Butt what about Germany, you assk? Ends up that the two German contestants (four cheeks) had to take a back seat to the 28 other competing countries. A real bummer for a nation so clearly obsessed with the past, I mean, behind. And that gets us to the bottom of the problem.
My haunch is that the German contestants, like so many of their compatriots out there, were too busy moralizing about the posterior to properly concentrate upon what is behind them right now. And this is what led to their early end. It all gets back to Germany’s lack of old-fashioned rearing, I assume. It’s a sad tail, but true. You know, turn the other cheek and all that?
Fanny thing is that the Germans will never fesse up this.
Die beiden hatten auch sicherlich ihre Hinterngedanken.

The resort apartments segment of the real estate market in Bulgaria is growing at an increasing pace, real estate consultants Colliers said on Tuesday.
The number of such properties in the mountain resorts grew by more than half in the first six months of the year to reach 76,500 at end-June.
The growth was most significant in the Bansko area, including Razlog, which accounts for 78% of the new supply, Colliers said.
Supply in Black Sea resorts rose at a slower pace, but still recorded an impressive 39% growth, or a total 13,500 apartments, in the same peiord.
Sunny Beach continues to account for more than one third of the supply in this segment, other resorts saw accelerated development as well.
In St. Vlas and in Sozopol holiday homes supply increased by 52% and 62% respectively, Colliers said.
But the overall sales prices in the resort apartments segment remained unchanged for the past half year as supply continues to outpace demand.
Price ranges remained within last year’s li

Netherlands vs. Bulgaria, 1430 ESTAmsterdam Arena - AmsterdamA win here for the Dutch puts them in a decent position to advance. Playing at home and having one of the best squads in the world, you've got to think they'll pull it off, but with the Oranje, you never know. They were unimpressive in their recent loss to Switzerland, but it was only a meaningless friendly. Before that they were unbeaten in their previous 11 including three straight wins on the road. Last but not least, they are relatively healthy and boost an attack that could probably score if you gave the opposition 13 players.Bulgaria is not without their stars either as Dimitar Berbatov and Martin Petrov can at times carry a squad, but even against the sometimes lackadaisical Dutch defense, I don't think they'll have enough here. Maybe if Valerie Bujinov wasn't hurt I'd give them a chance, but he is, and they'll lose, 0-2.Belarus vs. Romania, 1200 ESTDinamo - MinskAs long as Romania is healthy, they should at

Who would have thought putting together this weekly round-up of outstanding travel stories would be such a hazardous job?
First Rory Stewart’s instant classic about walking across Afghanistan kept me from getting a wink of sleep last night, then David Farley’s Bulgarian Beach Odyssey made me laugh so hard I strained a stomach muscle and got weird looks from everyone in this coffee shop.
But I don’t mind the risk, because digging up the very best travel writing on the web is just too much fun. I learn all sorts of interesting facts about everything from hermaphroditic tropical fish to how one can treat a jelly-fish sting to the genitals.
Take a deep breath, buckle your seat-belts, stock up on coffee and make sure no one will be overly startled when you begin to giggle, gasp and guffaw.

I’m back from sunny Bulgaria (July 2007). Me and my girlfriend stayed in the golden dreams apartments/hotel in the resort of Sunny beach, Bulgaria. We had an excellent time and really enjoyed our time there. The hotel was very clean and modern as the hotel is only 2 years old. The hotel has its own bar/restaurant which is excellent value for money for instance on the last night we had a salad each for a starter and spaghetti carbonara for main with 2 drinks each and it came to £10!

Comparing the drivers to England they are all NUTS! I’m surprised I didn’t see any crashes whilst I was there!

News reports out of Europe suggest that one of the biggest benefits of allowing Bulgaria to join the European Union just might be women with larger breasts. That's if you believe the hype around Boza beer.Either European men said to be flocking to buy Boza beer for their wives and girlfriends are gullible, or the company behind the brew will soon become one of the largest brewers in the world. Boza beer, made from fermented millet or wheat flour and yeast, is said to cause female consumers to grow larger breasts. Boza has become the rage among shopkeepers and bar owners in several parts of Europe now that high duties have been eliminated with Bulgaria in the EU. None of the news reports on Boza's reputed miracle qualities cite any scientific data. Boza is commonly consumed with breakfast in Bulgaria and nearby countries, which tends to make me think that what we may be dealing with here is a confirmed mass case of beer goggles.
