      Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
I've finally decided to jump on board and try Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) in my new home. Today I bought three GE Energy Smart 20 watt CFL's. The 20 watt CFL is equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. These new bulbs are supposed to last 6 years or 10,000 hours of operation. An incandescent light bulb typically only lasts about 750 hours. That means you'd need 14 incandescent bulbs to each fluorescent bulb. The cost of the bulb is payed for just comparing bulbs not even considering the energy savings.Obviously using these bulbs is a great way to start living "green". Beautiful Spring Bulbs
Instead of growing our daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs formally"in beds and borders"we naturalize them. This reduces care to almost nothing. What a pleasure just to plant, knowing that with most of the bulbs no further work is needed! For the greatest effectiveness we grow these naturalized bulbs in broad sweeps. You don't need a great deal of land to do this. A drift of a few dozen in a small area will be comparable, in its own way, to a great mass of bulbs. The method is important: Plant bulbs fairly close together and not in symmetrical rows, but informally, casually. One way to do this is to scatter bulbs on the ground and plant each one where it falls. Of course you will always want to have three or five bulbs of a certain variety in front of an old stump or lichened

      Planting Spring Bulbs
At Ultra Growth we like to plant our bulbs without much fuss or expense, using as few gadgets as possible. We prefer a garden shovel and pointed trowel. Most gardeners do not plant enough bulbs to make much of an impact in their early spring flower beds. In fall when the garden is still full of foliage from the summers perennials and annuals, it is hard to remember how stark the beds can look in early spring. The following is a sure fire step by step guide to planting your spring bulbs. 1) Spring flowering bulbs thrive in full or partial sun. Good drainage is a must for healthy bulbs. Do not plant your bulbs in soggy or low lying areas of your garden as water will pool in these areas during spring thaw. 2) Once you have chosen a site, prepare the soil by adding some compost and/or peat mos

A couple of months ago I was looking all over the internet for the local means by which I could recycle or properly dispose of a fluorescent light bulb. It was surprisingly not a straightforward process, in that the information I did find seemed geared toward a company or industrial organization. All this while we'd been marketed to by giant forces about procuring and using the light bulbs of the future, but no one had told us what to do when they burn out.Well finally today there appeared in the newspaper an article with information addressing my concern after the fact. Hopefully similar information will appear at the local level everywhere else.

Sylar Says Change Your Light Bulbs
I saw a commercial on TV today advocating changing your light bulbs from the old kind to the new, more efficient kind. There were a few different semi-famous people there. One of them was the actor who plays Sylar on "Heroes."I already knew that taking that step was a good idea. At first the commercial seemed almost a little redundant. And kind of confusing. I've only seen it once, and I wasn't paying that much attention at first because it seemed off-putting. It was like it berated us all as a group, whether or not it was appropriate on an individual basis. The only reason it would be appropriate is if not many people have been made aware or made to care that they should change their light bulbs. It's just a small step, and once it's out of the way, we can move on. But I thought we

      WHAT ARE HID HEADLIGHT BULBS?
By: Mike HID headlights are relatively new, especially to the United States market, and use a more efficient light bulb than conventional headlights. In the following article I will discuss a brief history of these headlights and some other interesting facts and misconceptions about them. I will also take a look at some of the advantages of using HID headlights. HID headlights were first used by BMW in 1991 in their BMW 7 series. HID headlights quickly became the preferred headlights used in European and Japanese automobiles but this change has been much slower in the United States. In 1996, Lincoln was the first US automaker to use HID headlights which they used in their Lincoln Mark VIII automobiles. So what exactly is HID lighting? HID bulbs use arc lamp technology. Arc lamp technology uses higher voltage electricity to create an arc between 2 electrodes. This technology has been used for many years but for industrial applications. In contrast, conventional lights pass electricity t

      Pineapple Lily Bulbs
Since the weather in Chicago was cooperating today I was doing some work in the garden. Mostly I was cleaning up some dead plants and pulling up my tender bulbs for winter storage. I checked on my Pineapple Lily bulbs to see how they were drying and realized that Pineapple Lily bulbs are really ugly. These ugly bulbs don't do the Pineapple Lily flower and seed pods justice. With such pretty flowers I'd expect Pineapple Lilies to have equally attractive bulbs but I guess a nice and fuzzy sheath like a Crocus corm or a shiny and papery skin like a Tulip is too much to ask for.The Pineapple Lily bulbs have overlapping ridges that are very reptilian in appearance. I guess books can't be judged by their cover and flowers can't be judged by their bulbs. I thought I'd learned everything I need to learn about my Pineapple Lily bulbs by growing them for the past two years but today I realized that there was something that I'd overlooked before. The bulb on the top was growing in a commerci

Fluorescent Light Bulbs Are Cool And All, But They Contain Mercury
Mercury is bad for you. You shouldn't touch it. If you breathe it in, that's even worse. So it's surprising that it's used in the new energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs. They're brighter and last longer than ordinary light bulbs, but the mercury means they're also potentially more harmful. It seems like this is evidence of a growing "half-measure" trend in the fight to combat energy inefficiency. There are a lot of steps we've been taking as a society to clean up our act, environmentally speaking. These include moving from gas-powered vehicles to gas-electric hybrids, gas-electric-hydrogen tribrids, and cars that run on ethanol. Many of these measures have faults of their own. We place so much emphasis on doing clean, environmentally-friendly work, and as of yet there is still no clear-cut technology that is pure and widely available. To save energy, we risk our own safety with things like mercury-infused light bulbs. Oh well. I guess we're just taking baby step

EUROPE: It to keep tariffs on light bulbs
European plans to lift tariffs on energy-saving light bulbs from China were put off for a year Wednesday as fears of Continental job losses prompted a protectionist backlash against Europe's top trade official, Peter Mandelson. A split inside the European Commission led Mandelson to abandon proposals to end the duties of up to 66 percent this year in favor of a pledge to scrap the tariffs in 2008. With European imports from China growing steadily, the dispute has become a part of the broader discussion about the impact of globalization and of the extent to which the 27-country European Union should use defensive trade measures. But it also has repercussions for the EU's push to tackle climate change since the bloc wants to phase out the use of common incandescent light bulbs for domestic use within two years. European production can meet only 25 percent of demand for energy-saving bulbs, the commission estimates. A senior European official, speaking on condition of anonymity, cha

How To Propagate Eucomis Bulbs: Leaf Cuttings
One of my favorite tender bulbs to grow is Eucomis bicolor. The bulb is commonly called a Pineapple Lily because the cluster of flowers grow in a pattern that resemble a pineapple. If you are interested in information on how I grow these bulbs here in Chicago you can read my previous post at this link: Eucomis bicolor-Pineapple Lily.Like with a lot of bulbs you plant in your garden Pineapple Lily can be propagated by removing offsets or collectings seeds but you can also propagate Eucomis bulbs by taking leaf cuttings. The most important part of the process is making sure you take your cuttings during the spring or summer to allow for the formation of the bulbs. Cuttings taken too late in the season will probably not produce any bulbs and you'll end up with rotted leaves. Propagating this plant is very easy and I'll try to explain how to do it here.Step 1:Remove a healthy green leaf from the bulb at the base of the stalk. I find it works better if you take your leaf after you've wa

Eco friendly light bulbs in mercury scare
We are told that we should be changing over all of our light bulbs to the eco friendly types that use less electricity and last for years. This both saves money by using less electricity and therefore helping to save the planet, well that is the theory. However according to research the light bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, which will know is seriously dangerous. There is no danger while the light bulb is in use, but should it break extreme caution should be taken in how you tidy the mess up. It is advisable that you sweep the glass up, an do not use the vacuum cleaner as this can allow the tiny particles of mercury to get airborne and then breathed in by anyone in the room. The amount of mercury in each light bulb is very small, but as with anything like this, caution is better than speed. Martyrs, Jihadists Are NOT the Brightest Bulbs on the Porch
Interesting reads today from NRO from three very good writers. The overall impression put forward by the media has been that these latest attacks by terrorists are not really al Qaeda linked because the skillset of the "would bes" lacks a certain proficiency or professionalism; this of course is due to the fact the intended outcome failed. We wouldn't want to discount their abilities obviously by suggesting they cannot succeed again. Yet when they have not had a successful attack, in the U.S. especially the public and media tends to discount that as though there were no threat. When they fail, the failures are looked upon as lacking that 007 aspect, so of course these cannot be real terrorists, al Qaeda or not. While the main thrust of these articles, with the exception of Ledeen's may not be on the subject of "IQ" the reader does get the underlying sense that the terrorists/suicide bombers/martyrs aren't all that quick on the uptake.Michael Ledeen takes the question of "smarts" as

No excuses for not having energy saving light bulbs
Many people still use standard incandescent light bulbs. A product which was introduced 120 years ago, converts only 5% of energy to light and lasts only 1000 hours. Tip: Change all your light bulbs to energy saving ones. No matter if you use CFLs or try LEDs, both will consume much less energy than incandescent light bulbs. Also note that incandescent light bulbs will be probably banned soon (at least in EU and Australia). We also don’t want to hear excuses that you cannot afford buy them because they are expensive. Detailed calculation on our eco forum tells completely something different, just have a look. Some might complain that CFLs contain mercury which is also harmful to the environment, that is true and you’ll need to recycle old CFLs properly. But mercury emitted from power plants during generating electricity to feed your incandescent light bulbs could be even higher as you can see from the diagram below. There are various shapes of CFL light bulbs including can

Buy them anyway — the small amount of mercury (less than in a watch battery) can be handled by a hazardous-waste facility. Recently Craighead Research Group at Corenll University reported their next “nano” breakthrough. They created a so-called “Nano-Lamp” - a microscopic collection of light-emitting fibers with dimensions of only a few hundred nanometers. The light-emitting spots on the fibers measure less than 250 nm in diameter which makes this light source smaller than the wavelength of light that they

Powerline Blog: Light Bulbs Going On (repost)
Powerline Blog article link Light Bulbs Going OnMark Steyn:Everything's difficult, isn't it? In the Democratic presidential candidates' debate, Sen. Barack Obama was asked what he personally was doing to save the environment, and replied that his family was "working on" changing their light bulbs. Is this the new version of the old joke? How many senators does it take to "work on" changing a light bulb? One to propose a bipartisan commission. One to threaten to de-fund the light bulbs. One to demand the impeachment of Bush and Cheney for keeping us all in the dark. One to vote to pull out the first of the light bulbs by fall of this year with a view to getting them all pulled out by the end of 2008. ***This week, both the House and the Senate voted for defeat in Iraq. That's to say, Congress got tired of waiting for deadbeat insurgents to get their act together and inflict devastating military humiliation on U.S. forces. So America's legislators have voted to m

      Compact Fluorescent Bulbs Can Kill!!!
I just want to say right now, people who support this movement to ban conventional light bulbs and replace them with these new compact bulbs are dolts! I went to Wal Mart today, and a group out of Chicago was giving out these bulbs for free. I looked on the back of the box and the lable said:Contains Mercury. Dispose Of According To Local, State, and Federal Laws.I thought, according to the First Church Of Al Gore, these things were going to save our asses from certain doom! My Mother-In-Law works for a water department in WI. She said that those things can leak and cause serious illness. They contain eight times more mercury than your supposed to be exposed to.She also said a news report indicated that a Maine resident broke one of the bulbs. She had to call HazMat and they charged her $2,000.00 for the clean-up!Mercury is well known to cause all kinds of illness and genetic defects. Autism may be linked. But if you're a lib, the end justifies the means. Your new born may have 3 legs

      Bye Bye Bad Bulbs?......Great Idea!
The sale of inefficient incandescent light bulbs will be banned in Canada by 2012.Natural Resources Minister Gary Lunn made the announcement earlier today, stating that the move would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than six million tonnes a year and save homeowners about $60 annually in electricity costs. The news was also welcomed by Canada's largest light bulb retailer - Home Depot. The home renovation giant is boasting a 350% increase in sales of compact fluorescents since 2004, and they are working with Phillips Lighting to launch a national recycling program for the high efficiency bulbs by 2008.Recognizing Canadians need a convenient and simple way to recycle CFLs properly, The Home Depot Canada in partnership with Phillips Lighting announced today it will test an in-store CFL recycling program this summer, with the expectation of making the program available nationally by 2008.Great news.

      Landscape bulbs
Landscape bulbs alongside your garden path Flowers and bulbs How to landscape bulbs? Very easy: since you know in advance how the flowers of the bulbs will look like, bulbs are easy to landscape. You can get idea’s from Keukenhof Gardens, yet the simplest idea to landscape bulbs is to integrate them in the flow and lines already available in your garden. Like in the picture above taken from the "Open Gardens" from Belgium (see Hyacinth Garden): the yellow daffodils follow the flow of the garden path. Simple. Add to that the perfume of the pink hyacinths planted together in a big oval cluster and you have a winner. Electric Bulbs : Edison's collage
An artistic composition of materials and objects pasted over a surface, often with unifying lines and color.A work, such as a literary piece, composed of both borrowed and original material. The art of creating such compositions. An assemblage of diverse elements: a collage of conflicting memories.Thomas A. Edison, a young inventor working in Menlo Park, New Jersey, began working on his own form of electric light in the 1870s. In 1877 Edison became involved with the rush for a satisfactory electric light source, devoting his initial involvement to confirming the reasons for his competitors' failures. He did, however, determine that platinum made a much better burner than carbon. Working with platinum, Edison obtained his first patent in April of 1879 on a relatively impractical lamp, but he continued searching for an element that could be heated efficiently and economically.

Cheap Bulbs For Your First Garden
There are many options to choose from when you're starting a garden but if you're a frugal gardener or gardening on a budget you learn to keep your eyes open for discounted plants, bulbs and gardening seeds. This week in the paper I came across this ad for a discount grocery store called ALDI. I'm not sure just how widespread they are across the country but they have a site you can visit and see if you're in their market. Here in Chicago these stores are not always in a very nice area and sometimes the neighborhoods they are in can be a little rough. But aside from all that I love how they will have plants from time to time. I bought my first Amaryllis from a kit from this store and the year before last I bought a box of crocus bulbs from there. I believe the crocus bulbs were about 50 in a box and it was under five dollars. This week they're advertising Spring Bulbs and perennials for 2.29 from a company called Fausner. Last summer I also bought a huge hanging basket of new guine

Australia to Burn Out Incandescent Bulbs by 2010
Australia’s Environmental Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced the government’s decision to ban incandescent light bulbs and phase them out by the year 2010. Australia has announced plans to ban incandescent light bulbs and replace them with more energy efficient fluorescent bulbs. The environment minister said the move could cut the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by 4 million tonnes by 2012. [original emphasis] The change is expected to be a huge energy saver for Australians. The incandescent light bulb, which wastes energy in heat dispersed while the light is switched on, is based on a design invented in the 19th century by engineers including Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan. The bulbs will be completely phased out by 2010 and replaced with the more fuel efficient compact fluorescent models which use around 20% of the electricity to produce the same amount of light. “Proud polluter” Sean Hannity’s head would explode if such a measure were passed i

Daffodil Bulbs, 6x8, oil $100, unframed, Free shipping in the US To purchase contact: jan.blencowe@comcast.net Before I planted these and set them on the windowsill to grow I wanted to paint them. I like their shape, the earthiness of the color and the shagginess of their roots. I had them sitting on a table in front of a window and the morning light was pouring in behind them providing a lot of contrast, and contrast is exactly what they will provide when they are blooming on the windowsill against a backdrop of snow and freezing cold. Cheery daffodils will be a welcome site in my livingroom in the dead of winter. I may get inspired and do a number of paintings documenting their growth and bloom, look for them in the weeks and months ahead. Enjoy! painting a day daily painting

It says research into techniques such as giant mirrors in space or reflective dust pumped into the atmosphere would be "important insurance" against rising emissions, and has lobbied for such a strategy to be recommended by a major UN report on climate change, the first part of which will be published on Friday.[…]The US response, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, says the idea of interfering with sunlight should be included in the summary for policymakers, the prominent chapter at the front of each IPCC report. It says: "Modifying solar radiance may be an important strategy if mitigation of emissions
