He designed this bulb to accommodate the need for easier handling and packaging. The flat bulb was part of the 100% design tokyo.

Have you ever smelled paperwhites? I'm talking about the tiny little white daffodils that are also called paperwhite narcissus. They have such a lovely clean white scent that if you've smelled them once that's probably all I'd need to mention to get you to plant them. They're a bulb that's easy to "force" (or force to bloom) indoors and they're a winter bulb which is why I'm mentioning it now.If

I've finally decided to jump on board and try Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFL) in my new home. Today I bought three GE Energy Smart 20 watt CFL's. The 20 watt CFL is equivalent to a 75 watt incandescent light bulb. These new bulbs are supposed to last 6 years or 10,000 hours of operation. An incandescent light bulb typically only lasts about 750 hours. That means you'd need 14 incandescent bulbs to each fluorescent bulb. Instead of growing our daffodils and other spring-flowering bulbs formally"in beds and borders"we naturalize them. This reduces care to almost nothing. What a pleasure just to plant, knowing that with most of the bulbs no further work is needed! For the greatest effectiveness we grow these naturalized bulbs in broad sweeps. You don't need a great deal of land to do this. A drift of a few dozen in a small area will be comparable, in its own way, to a great mass of bulbs. The method is important: Plant bulbs fairly close together and not in symmetrical rows, but informally, casually. One way to do this is to scatter bulbs on the ground and plant each one where it falls. Of course you will always want to have three or five bulbs of a certain variety in front of an old stump or lichened

At Ultra Growth we like to plant our bulbs without much fuss or expense, using as few gadgets as possible. We prefer a garden shovel and pointed trowel. Most gardeners do not plant enough bulbs to make much of an impact in their early spring flower beds. In fall when the garden is still full of foliage from the summers perennials and annuals, it is hard to remember how stark the beds can look in early spring. The following is a sure fire step by step guide to planting your spring bulbs. 1) Spring flowering bulbs thrive in full or partial sun. Good drainage is a must for healthy bulbs. Do not plant your bulbs in soggy or low lying areas of your garden as water will pool in these areas during spring thaw. 2) Once you have chosen a site, prepare the soil by adding some compost and/or peat mos
A couple of months ago I was looking all over the internet for the local means by which I could recycle or properly dispose of a fluorescent light bulb. It was surprisingly not a straightforward process, in that the information I did find seemed geared toward a company or industrial organization. All this while we'd been marketed to by giant forces about procuring and using the light bulbs of the future, but no one had told us what to do when they burn out.Well finally today there appeared in the newspaper an article with information addressing my concern after the fact. Hopefully similar information will appear at the local level everywhere else.
I saw a commercial on TV today advocating changing your light bulbs from the old kind to the new, more efficient kind. There were a few different semi-famous people there. One of them was the actor who plays Sylar on "Heroes."I already knew that taking that step was a good idea. At first the commercial seemed almost a little redundant. And kind of confusing. I've only seen it once, and I wasn't paying that much attention at first because it seemed off-putting. It was like it berated us all as a group, whether or not it was appropriate on an individual basis. The only reason it would be appropriate is if not many people have been made aware or made to care that they should change their light bulbs. It's just a small step, and once it's out of the way, we can move on. But I thought we
US have passed a law that will not allow stores to sell incandescent light bulbs after 2012. The EU and Australia have already decided to dump the inefficient lighting devices by 2010. I must say (with full respect to Edison) that it's a good decision. Every country should try to do same and encourage people [...]
I read in USA Today that the government might soon establish a policy under which stores would be forced to stop selling the old light bulbs in favor of more expensive, energy efficient ones. This would force us all to use them, but help eliminate a sizable chunk of wasted energy.Sounds like a good thing. I'll bet this (if it happens) will open the door to other mandates that will transform our society into a cleaner, more efficient one.

By: Mike HID headlights are relatively new, especially to the United States market, and use a more efficient light bulb than conventional headlights. In the following article I will discuss a brief history of these headlights and some other interesting facts and misconceptions about them. I will also take a look at some of the advantages of using HID headlights. HID headlights were first used by BMW in 1991 in their BMW 7 series. HID headlights quickly became the preferred headlights used in European and Japanese automobiles but this change has been much slower in the United States. In 1996, Lincoln was the first US automaker to use HID headlights which they used in their Lincoln Mark VIII automobiles. So what exactly is HID lighting? HID bulbs use arc lamp technology. Arc lamp technology uses higher voltage electricity to create an arc between 2 electrodes. This technology has been used for many years but for industrial applications. In contrast, conventional lights pass electricity t
Since the weather in Chicago was cooperating today I was doing some work in the garden. Mostly I was cleaning up some dead plants and pulling up my tender bulbs for winter storage. I checked on my Pineapple Lily bulbs to see how they were drying and realized that Pineapple Lily bulbs are really ugly. These ugly bulbs don't do the Pineapple Lily flower and seed pods justice. With such pretty flowers I'd expect Pineapple Lilies to have equally attractive bulbs but I guess a nice and fuzzy sheath like a Crocus corm or a shiny and papery skin like a Tulip is too much to ask for.The Pineapple Lily bulbs have overlapping ridges that are very reptilian in appearance. I guess books can't be judged by their cover and flowers can't be judged by their bulbs. I thought I'd learned everything I need to learn about my Pineapple Lily bulbs by growing them for the past two years but today I realized that there was something that I'd overlooked before. The bulb on the top was growing in a commerci

It’s really a great move to save our environment from its mercury content.
Mercury is bad for you. You shouldn't touch it. If you breathe it in, that's even worse. So it's surprising that it's used in the new energy-efficient fluorescent light bulbs. They're brighter and last longer than ordinary light bulbs, but the mercury means they're also potentially more harmful. It seems like this is evidence of a growing "half-measure" trend in the fight to combat energy inefficiency. There are a lot of steps we've been taking as a society to clean up our act, environmentally speaking. These include moving from gas-powered vehicles to gas-electric hybrids, gas-electric-hydrogen tribrids, and cars that run on ethanol. Many of these measures have faults of their own. We place so much emphasis on doing clean, environmentally-friendly work, and as of yet there is still no clear-cut technology that is pure and widely available. To save energy, we risk our own safety with things like mercury-infused light bulbs. Oh well. I guess we're just taking baby step

European plans to lift tariffs on energy-saving light bulbs from China were put off for a year Wednesday as fears of Continental job losses prompted a protectionist backlash against Europe's top trade official, Peter Mandelson. A split inside the European Commission led Mandelson to abandon proposals to end the duties of up to 66 percent this year in favor of a pledge to scrap the tariffs in 2008. With European imports from China growing steadily, the dispute has become a part of the broader discussion about the impact of globalization and of the extent to which the 27-country European Union should use defensive trade measures. But it also has repercussions for the EU's push to tackle climate change since the bloc wants to phase out the use of common incandescent light bulbs for domestic use within two years. European production can meet only 25 percent of demand for energy-saving bulbs, the commission estimates. A senior European official, speaking on condition of anonymity, cha

One of my favorite tender bulbs to grow is Eucomis bicolor. The bulb is commonly called a Pineapple Lily because the cluster of flowers grow in a pattern that resemble a pineapple. If you are interested in information on how I grow these bulbs here in Chicago you can read my previous post at this link: Eucomis bicolor-Pineapple Lily.Like with a lot of bulbs you plant in your garden Pineapple Lily can be propagated by removing offsets or collectings seeds but you can also propagate Eucomis bulbs by taking leaf cuttings. The most important part of the process is making sure you take your cuttings during the spring or summer to allow for the formation of the bulbs. Cuttings taken too late in the season will probably not produce any bulbs and you'll end up with rotted leaves. Propagating this plant is very easy and I'll try to explain how to do it here.Step 1:Remove a healthy green leaf from the bulb at the base of the stalk. I find it works better if you take your leaf after you've wa
Incandescent bulbs have been so far tagged as a green obstacle for the current shift for better energy use and waste management issues today. However, despite these warnings Surya Roshni, an Indian company has still been manufacturing the said bulb to which Greenpeace has been trying to negotiate and convince them to stop the whole manufacturing line. While blockades and protests have been set up to get the company’s attention. Apparently the message being sent is to stop the manufacture of these incandescent bulbs and shift to the ideal CFL bulbs immediately.
While primary addresses were already made by the General Manager of the Kashipur unit, the protest goes on until the shift towards the ideal CFL bulbs has been satisfied.

We have all been familiar with the rapid increase of incandescent bulbs through the years and while the evolution of the CFL and other fluorescent bulbs are something that people have turned to, the green contribution of making that lighting change goes way beyond having an ideal atmosphere in any room that people want good lighting.
The savings on the pocket is something worth to consider since these CFL bulbs last longer and cost wiser. Further, they are good tools to resort to for people who want to make a contribution towards quality world living today.

We are told that we should be changing over all of our light bulbs to the eco friendly types that use less electricity and last for years. This both saves money by using less electricity and therefore helping to save the planet, well that is the theory.
However according to research the light bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, which will know is seriously dangerous. There is no danger while the light bulb is in use, but should it break extreme caution should be taken in how you tidy the mess up.
It is advisable that you sweep the glass up, an do not use the vacuum cleaner as this can allow the tiny particles of mercury to get airborne and then breathed in by anyone in the room. The amount of mercury in each light bulb is very small, but as with anything like this, caution is better than speed.

Interesting reads today from NRO from three very good writers. The overall impression put forward by the media has been that these latest attacks by terrorists are not really al Qaeda linked because the skillset of the "would bes" lacks a certain proficiency or professionalism; this of course is due to the fact the intended outcome failed. We wouldn't want to discount their abilities obviously by suggesting they cannot succeed again. Yet when they have not had a successful attack, in the U.S. especially the public and media tends to discount that as though there were no threat. When they fail, the failures are looked upon as lacking that 007 aspect, so of course these cannot be real terrorists, al Qaeda or not. While the main thrust of these articles, with the exception of Ledeen's may not be on the subject of "IQ" the reader does get the underlying sense that the terrorists/suicide bombers/martyrs aren't all that quick on the uptake.Michael Ledeen takes the question of "smarts" as
There complaining about the mercury in the light bulbs if they break. I am sure we will find a way to safely dispose of these light bulbs. After all they last 5 to 7 years. We won’t be going through a lot of them. I have only two of these in my house. My husband says that they are to expensive in his opinion.
Many people still use standard incandescent light bulbs. A product which was introduced 120 years ago, converts only 5% of energy to light and lasts only 1000 hours.
Tip: Change all your light bulbs to energy saving ones.
No matter if you use CFLs or try LEDs, both will consume much less energy than incandescent light bulbs. Also note that incandescent light bulbs will be probably banned soon (at least in EU and Australia).
We also don’t want to hear excuses that you cannot afford buy them because they are expensive. Detailed calculation on our eco forum tells completely something different, just have a look.
Some might complain that CFLs contain mercury which is also harmful to the environment, that is true and you’ll need to recycle old CFLs properly. But mercury emitted from power plants during generating electricity to feed your incandescent light bulbs could be even higher as you can see from the diagram below.
There are various shapes of CFL light bulbs including can
For people who use solar power the drain on it can enormous every time a light is turned on, having several lights would totally drain the power to the extent that none would work, the power would be just draining away, as this not acceptable solutions need to be found, after all we cannot live without light and have naked flames around can be dangerous and impractical.
There is a product on the market that can help in this situation, EcoLEDs is a company that produce specialist light bulbs, in fact these light bulbs use a mere 10 watts, which is a tenth of the average light bulb, you can how this helps already.
Just think what would happen if everyone used these light bulbs, the power usage would fall as well as the carbon emissions form power stations.

Hey, here’s something I didn’t know:
Q. I want to follow your recommendation and buy compact fluorescent lightbulbs, but I’ve discovered they contain mercury. What should I do?
A. Buy them anyway — the small amount of mercury (less than in a watch battery) can be handled by a hazardous-waste facility.
I’d just been getting nervous about the mercury thing after more and more people pointed it out. Less than in a watch battery? OK, now we’re getting somewhere. Just don’t forget to follow steps outlined on this PDF of how to handle your compact fluorescents.
Every day scientists continue to surprises us with the new discoveries; however, the most noted and admired by the vast majority of folks as well as science professionals are the achievements and developments in the field of nanotechnology. We all get easily amused when we see the next “nano” research headline because the “nanotech world” is not yet fully understood or explored.
Recently Craighead Research Group at Corenll University reported their next “nano” breakthrough. They created a so-called “Nano-Lamp” - a microscopic collection of light-emitting fibers with dimensions of only a few hundred nanometers.
According to the research article published in “Nano Letters”, the scientists were able to create one of the smallest manmade source of light that world has ever seen. The light-emitting spots on the fibers measure less than 250 nm in diameter which makes this light source smaller than the wavelength of light that they
