Historic buildings are becoming increasingly difficult to find in Panama City, according to an article in The Panama Report. Many historic buildings are being torn down in favor of higher density condominiums, which lack the local character and charm of older buildings. In Neighborhoods such as San Francisco, Marbella, and Bella Vista, many [...]
Cracking view from the top of Rail House, here looking across some of St John's ward towards the town centre. For new arrivals to Crewe or this blog, Rail House is the high-rise building that many see as they pass through the railway station. Mixed offices these days, many different companies within. You must wonder about its longer-term future, though. What if (and it's still a big IF) the station is shunted south towards Basford? Surely many of the offices would follow, affording the best possible access to/from work for their employees. If Rail House is currently prime site in terms of commuters it will not be if Network Rail opt to build a new station around revamped track and signalling. Rents would drop, the building would become like many office blocks in the middle of nowhere. Mayb
A building with great architecture value... Big Ben from a distanceThe Clock Tower is the world's largest four-faced, chiming clock. The structure is situated at the north-eastern end of the Houses of Parliament in Westminster, London. It is often colloquially referred to as Big Ben, which is actually the nickname of the main bell housed within the tower (formally known as the Great Be
Some historical buildings in Singapore have featured as settings in classic novels and local folklore. If you are visiting Singapore, remember to check out these 3: the Raffles Hotel, Thian Hock Keng Temple and Sri Mariamman Temple. Raffles Hotel, Singapore: This is the hotel that has enchanted writers such as Noel Coward, Rudyard Kipling and Somerset Maugham, all of whom have written about it. Even as early as 1910, the Raffles Hotel was a stopover for filthily rich visitors on round-the-world cruises. Such is its attraction that even a real tiger entered it in 1902. But without an invitation, it was eventually shot dead by a school teacher, who turned up at the scene curiously wearing pyjamas and carrying a hangover. This is also a hotel not to be trifled with. Who else is able to get th

In these days, Architectures are each more concerned about environment, the new architectural concept is incorporate renewable energy in the buildings, the main purpose is to make sustainable buildings. Wind turbines is been the solution to generate energy needed for the buildings. One example is the Bahrain World Trade Center, this Trade Center is constituted by two towers, and between them there are three wind turbines, each one has 29m of diameter. These turbines can generate at least 11-15 percent of energy needed. The aerodynamic tower forms can accelerate the wind velocity on the wind turbines, giving the necessary power to run the turbine blades. I feel that this maybe the future for most buildings !!!Homepage:bahrainwtc
Nowadays architects are projecting more sustainable buildings, thinking in the environment and in the future each more we will see magnificent constructions with extraordinary design around the world. According a Droll Things’ reader, these towers that you are seeing, are sustainable buildings, they can generate 50% less CO2 emissions than a normal buildings. This is [...]

It’s not often (actually, it's never happened before) that I stay away from blogging for so long, but this Asian cough or whatever finally did me in. Just don’t get too close to the screen and you should be fine.My Shanghai adventures included a wonderful tour by an expatriate art expert, Michelle, who took us to see the Bund, Shanghai’s most famous street and district, and gave our little group an excellent historical, artistic and architectural appreciation for the area. In some ways, the history of this one street is really a microcosm of Chinese history during the late 19th and 20th centuries – from the Opium Wars through the Cultural Revolution to China today - and it is fascinating. We took a local ferry to get there, which I admit I was a bit apprehensive about. Gosh, are you
Stock exchanges worldwide try to show off a little bit of their culture along with their ability to handle massive amounts of money. But not all these buildings look cool. To be honest, a lot of them look like boring warehouses full of tools. And so we present to you a look at the Top Stock Exchange Buildings around the globe...10. Each building is a case study in itself, with specific surroundings, usage patterns, client requirements and weather conditions. One might use a north-south alignment to block off the sun's heat. Another, forced by circumstance to face the rising or setting sun, might use glazing or shades to achieve the same. Buildings home insurance offers you protection against the structure of your house, along with that of the permanent fixtures such as the toilet, baths and fitted kitchens. The test is if the fixture can be removed and then moved somewhere new. Many buildings home insurance policies will often also include garden sheds, greenhouses and garages but not always boundary walls and fences, paths and gates, so check this fist as these can also amount to a considerable amount. When buying a new house you will find that your mortgage lender will recommend that you take out buildings home insurance cover and may in many cases attempt to sell you an insurance policy. In such cases it is important to remember that you are under no obligation to take this cover and that you may be better off looking

An absolute stunner in today’s New York Times:
The high-rise building under construction on the East Side where a crane collapse last month killed seven people did not conform with zoning regulations and was approved in error, the city’s buildings commissioner said on Thursday at a City Council hearing.
Later, in a clarification, the commissioner, Patricia J. Lancaster, told reporters that the Buildings Department should not have approved the building as proposed. But she left open the possibility that it might have been properly approved in a different configuration.
The commissioner would not say whether the high-rise, set for 43 stories at 303 East 51st Street and Second Avenue, should have been built at a different height or interior square footage.

Business Times - 10 Apr 2008 LETTER TO THE EDITORDevelopers decide how much space to allot to carparks in new buildings WE refer to your article, 'Parking squeeze may take shine off new buildings' (BT, March 29), which suggests that there would be a potential shortage of carpark lots in new office and commercial buildings due to the government's rule on the provision of parking lots. This is inaccurate. Singapore adopts the approach where the government determines the minimum parking provision based on the given gross floor area (GFA) of the development. Developers can provide for more parking lots than this stipulated minimum. Hence both the actual number of parking lots provided and the parking charges imposed are market driven, as they are left to individual developers and carpark opera
Living in the capital specifically in the city here in Ireland has a complete difference with living in the other counties. There the cost of living is cheaper, what can we expect in the city anyway? A full 3 bedroom house outside Dublin cost almost the same as a bed-sit here. There someone can have a decent family life with gardens and parking spaces, quite and in harmonious. I would have loved to live outside Dublin but our source of living is here so we got no choice. That's why, people that are lucky should make good use of their extra space, the front yard or the back ground for gardens where they can chill out and have a quite cup of tea with guests or family members. Or there is no need to rent an office space outside for they can order one of the designs of garden buildings availabl

It is very important to both lender and the borrower that the mortgaged property is adequately insured. For the lender, the property is the prime security for the loan that has been made and it is essential that it is insured against any event that would adversely affect its value. Similarly, the borrower needs to protect his home. From a lender's point of view, insurance of the property's contents is not so critical. The borrower, however, should insure his contents, although not all do. Combined policies have become much more common in the past few years. Many buildings insurance policies are now index-linked. This means that the level of cover that is put in place at the outset is automatically increased annually in line with a recognised index that reflects increases in house building co

The four-level Belle Époque palace, on Boulevard Victor Hugo in the center of Nice, was built in 1908 for a Swiss industrialist and his family. It now is divided into six apartments — each of impressive size — and the Zeidans have parts of three levels, including a large kitchen in the basement. The second-floor neighbor lives in what was once the ballroom. The top-floor apartment, created from the reception rooms that were the artistic showpiece of the home, is on the market for 1.35 million euros, or a little more than $2 million. The other units, Ms. Connolly said, are each about 250 to 300 square meters (2,690 to 3,229 square feet) and worth nearly 1 million euros ($1.58 million).

By building green--and retrofitting existing buildings--the countries of North America could cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 25 percent

Combine it with underground storage, and a year-round system can be created where the system can cover heating requirements in the winter and cooling in the summer. The Dutch company Ooms Avenhorn Holding BV has taken this concept and moved it a step forward with the Road Energy System® (RES). Rather than putting tubes on a rooftop, RES lays the collection system within concrete -- think the black asphalt of a road or runway. The piping connects to undeground storage areas. Properties built since the mid-1980’s are unlikely to contain asbestos [...]

Storage Buildings
Looking for storage buildings is not like spotting planets in other solar systems with a giant telescope, but it does take a trained eye. The issue is finding storage buildings for your purpose. There are many types of storage buildings , some with multiple purposes but not necessarily for your purpose. Before you go in shock from this unexpected news, sit back, drink a can of root beer, and enjoy leaning about the different types of storage buildings .

Those who work in UK law, local government or the construction industry have heard of the word "Asbestos" for many years. But up until as recently as twenty years ago, most of the population of the UK did not know about the dangers and the diseases caused by asbestos. This danger from asbestos is highlighted by the fact that almost every government from around the world has regulations and laws in place against the use of asbestos in building materials.Asbestos is a Greek word which means "inextinguishable". Asbestos is also known as "magical mineral" due to the fact that it has such a natural composition that it is considered ideal for usage in anything from tiles to rooftops to road signs. It has even be used in making the socks we wear. Up until 1980 army, navy, railway, construction, i
Coupled with a deal that has put his ownership of the trophy General Motors Building on Fifth Avenue at risk, Mr. Macklowe's capitulation is one of the most dramatic signs so far of how the credit problems caused by the subprime crisis in residential real estate have spilled over into the world of office buildings, stores, apartment buildings and other commercial property. Other investors who acquired commercial real estate at the top of the market are facing similar problems because values have fallen and they can't refinance the debt they placed on the buildings in rosier times.

The view from Top of the Rock, its better in person than in my not great pictures.
There are some people I know who would visit a skyscraper just because its there. This is a similar, but lazier, mentality to the I-climbed-the-mountain-because-it-was-there set. If these people are in a city with a really freakin’ tall building, they are going up, up, up. I am not one of these people. I don’t have a problem with heights, but I generally believe that a tall building isn’t great in and of itself. And I’m not a huge “view” person either. I’m never in the window seat on the plane. Things from the ground are usually far more interesting to me.
Last month I made my annual (sometimes semi-annual) pilgrimage to New York, and was browsing across the 127 things to do in New York on Viator. I wanted to do something new, and I’ve been to New York so many times I’ve lost count (10 maybe? 12?). 127 things is a lot to look through, so I dec

I live in a Mobile Home. I’m not happy about it. But it did fulfill my needs at the time and it is practical. It has the luxuries I desire and I can afford it. I want a big new house one of these days.
One of my husbands biggest complaints about it is the fact that there isn’t a garage or carport. he really really misses his nice big garage. I admit I miss it too. I miss a lot of things about our grand old house but I have to I learn to live without it. I won’t have another grand big house unless I win the lottery.
Most of the time people put those rounded metal buildings outside of there mobile homes as Carports. I’ve seen some people turn them into barns and houses as well. I look at them and I suspect with the proper waterproofing that rounded metal shell could hold an earth load. You know a living roof. Not a 2 foot thick one but if you installed soaker hoses on it you could probably put a 12 inch one of there or even a 6 inch one a
Purchasing a home is likely to be the biggest investment you ever make so it is well worth to do your homework before you sign anything. One of the best ways to do this is to find a home that is worth less than you can afford and then do some repairs and remodeling. If you have the time and the ability to do this on your own you will save a fortune. It can be very expensive to hire a contractor so think about this option only if you are up to the task of completing the majority of the work on your own. (more…)
A change in leaf color is taking place just outside my home office window. The tree is a two story Japanese Maple full of stunning orange/red glow. Next to that is my frontporch roof in all its shingled glory. I so wish our home had a metal rool like my next door neighbor does. She, by the way, is one heck of a great person. Not because of her roof. Just in general - she’s a one of those people you admire and respect as soon as you meet her.
Metal Buildings really ought to factor in with the rest of your choices when looking at rebuilding or initial planning or renovation. Anyway, back to metal roofs. Looking around for companies that handle such work isn’t as fun as staring out at a Fall window scene close enough to grab if I open the window. Metal Buildings or just the roofs themselves are another of those “sense of peace” purchases that I plan on making at some point. They last forever, just like metal buildings. I live in hurricane territory. Metal is good.

This morning, I again awoke to fairly heavy snow falling. That makes yesterday’s sunshine even more special - it prompted another trip to Skagway, and it turned out to be a superb day. The light was spectacular, and there were enough clouds to provide a lot of drama through the White Pass in particular. It was truly a photographer’s dream day, and between Cathy and I we shot 92 photos. This image shows Summit Lake and the Sawtooth Mountains in the White Pass (click to enlarge each of today’s photos).
During the day, though, I also discovered that two century-old mining buildings were washed away by this summer’s extremely high water levels in the Southern Lakes. This photo shows the Venus Mine on May 31 this year. To the left of the large mill is a log warehouse on the shore of Windy Arm of Tagish Lake - it is now completely gone, apparently just an assortment of scattered logs drifting down the lake system somehwere.

Structural and zoning considerations for your metal building are the first order of business. The dimensions of your building and the finished exterior appearance are considerations for zoning approval. A plot plan is required for zoning approval along with the structure's size and the location of the building specific to the plot plan. If you are planning to develop a specific plot of land do a tour of the surrounding neighborhood to see if metal buildings are already in place. Lately, I have been spending alot of time with Clayton when he’s back from school. We will read together and he’ll like me to play simple stimulation board games with him. I enjoy that and so does he. I know of few girl friends who are hoping to stop work and start a business from home. Like most work-at-home moms, they are afraid of distractions and sometimes, space in the house can be limited which doesn’t permit a home office to be set up. (more…)
Seven years ago, we attended my brother-in-law's convocation and took the opportunity to tour around San Francisco for a short time. My brother in law is a marathon runner and will participate in numerous runs just for the fun of it. Being a bachelor, this is how he spends his leisure and recreation moments. While we were there visiting, he took us to a marathon event cum carnival, together with our cousins. That was an eye opener for us as we got a chance to experience the locals and participate in some carnival activities. I did notice that the organizer was using metal buildings for the activity rooms, which were spacious, functional and most importantly, they were easy to set up.Later on, I was told that metal buildings were popular for both commercial and residential use due to the durability and price factors. Unlike wood frame buildings, they were not prone to termites attack or weather damage.

The U.S. Navy spent as much as $600,000 for the architectural and landscaping modifications to hide the fact that their four buildings together looks like a swastika from an up above view shot. The 4 buildings are L shaped and because they are positioned next to each other this makes the swastika very noticeable, these buildings were constructed in the 60’s which were part of the amphibious base at Coronado of which served as barracks for Seabees. We have put the video below of which you will see satellite images from Google Earth, without a doubt these buildings do look like the symbol used by the Nazis. The U.S. Navy have tried to mask the shape and have said that they do not want to be in any way associated with something as hateful and symbolic as a swastika.

A common worry for those who live in a landed property is termites problem. I have heard that some people spent thousands of dollars just to get rid of termites and yet, some have not had no success destroying these pests. While visiting my auntie's house few years ago, I recalled her havings little poles sticking out of her garden. Later, I found out that those are placed there by the termite control people.I suppose this is why many homeowners are choosing metal buildings to avoid this problem. Besides, good quality metal buildings will not rot nor burn, and steel frames price is cheaper with wood. In other words, you save money from steel frame metal buildings and enjoy the peace of mind that they won't be home to the termites.
