      Buick Invicta Concept (Beijing 2008)
Invicta -- the star of GM's stand at the 2008 AutoChina show in Beijing -- is also widely believed to be what the 2010 Buick LaCrosse that's been spied testing will become when it makes its appearance on Buick showroom floors in both China and the U.S. The LaCrosse is a nameplate sold both here and in China, but the cars are substantially different. That will change with the next LaCrosse, which will be underpinned by GM's global Epsilon II architecture. The Epsilon II is front-drive based but all-wheel drive capable. Powering the Invicta concept is a version of GM's 2.0-liter, direct-injection turbo four cylinder with an estimated 250 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Beijing Show 2008 Highlights: Buick Invicta Concept
The once proud all-American Buick brand is making its second renaissance - albeit away from its birthplace. The Invicta concept is the second Buick concept unveiled in China in the last two years, following from the Riviera concept unveiled at Shanghai last year. As with the Riviera, China has again played a significant role in designing, developing and premiering the car. The Invicta concept can best be described as a four-door luxury sports coupe, with styling that demonstates a good overall profile and proportions, with massive, waving bodyside surfacing defining the character of the vehicle. And the Invicta also displays a healthy body to DLO ratio, with the robust bodyside volume creating defined, sculpted surfaces with highlights that were clearly visible from far away. Howe

      Spied: 2010 Buick Invicta/LaCrosse
General Motors previewed its Beijing auto show "concept" Monday; the Buick Invicta sedan. The Invicta is said to hint at the next-generation LaCrosse, which will be built off the second-generation Epsilon (Chevy Malibu/Pontiac G6/Saturn Aura/Saab 9-3) platform, but really, what showgoers will see Saturday is pretty much the real car. Its styling, says GM interior design chief Dave Lyon, will feature modern interpretations of the Buick portholes (or "ventiports" as they were called in the '50s) and the "sweepspear," the asymmetric v-shaped profile accent found on many of the brand's cars in the '50s and '60s.With the Invicta, Buick designers have taken last year's Riviera concept even further, Lyon says, making "a very aggressive, very chic four-door concept with a low roofline." Busineess Monday: Bye-Bye Buick Lucerne?
It seems like the news from Detroit these days is nothing but bad. GM and the UAW went through a strike just a few weeks ago, while Chrysler is still in negotiations, and sales of American cars are slumping at the same time American auto workers are asking for better job stability and benefits, among other things. GM, specifically, has announced that with sales of the Buick Lucerne down 15.3 percent, and the Cadillac DTS down 14.4 percent, they will be halting production of those front-wheel drive behemoths at it’s Detroit-Hamtramck plant for two weeks beginning on December 14th, with subsequent plans to completely drop a shift, and lay off 767 hourly workers. The Lucerne and the DTS were originally put into production to replace the classic Buick LeSabre and Cadillac Deville. GM’s numbers say that the Lucerne’s whole market segment is down 19.1 percent through September, while the DTS is still leading it’s segment, but also has numbers that are off, down 5.5

      2008 Buick Lucerne Super
BY ERIK JOHNSON, PHOTOGRAPHY BY JARED HOLSTEIN Not nearly as super as one might hope. We must confess that, being of an age that falls between 20 and 30, we have a distinct lack of enthusiasm concerning the resurrected Super badge. Yes, it’s true the name has loads of historical significance for Buick, but anybody who could legally drive when the last Super rolled off the assembly line in 1958—i.e., anybody who might actually care—is, at a minimum, pushing 70. It’s a good thing, then, that the Buick Lucerne, which serves as the basis for the Lucerne Super (shocking, we know), is a fine-driving car, especially for a leisurely jaunt to the pharmacy, and it has a trunk big enough to hold a few months’ worth of luggage for the yearly migration to warmer climes. It’s comfortable, quiet, and reasonably luxurious. What the Lucerne isn’t, though, is a ride that quickens an enthusiast’s heartbeat. The regular car’s available V-8, a 4.6-liter Northstar, is smooth but no barn

Buick Enclave: Top-of-the Line Crossover with High-Tech DNA
The new Enclave takes Buick back to the brand's roots with a quiet ride, striking style and smooth performance. The Enclave shares a platform with both the Saturn Outlook and the GMC Acadia, but because it's a Buick, this eight-passenger crossover is more about pampering. Power comes from the same 3.6-liter, 271-hp V6 as the GMC and Saturn models and comes paired to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is on the options list—as is a choice of 18-inch or 19-inch wheels. If you want some serious bling, there’s a 20-inch wheel available as a dealer-installed option. Fuel economy is rated as 16/24 (city/highway) for the front drive Enclave, and two less in each category for the all-wheel drive model. But Enclave is more about style and ride than simple raw numbers. Of the three GM crossovers built on this chassis, Enclave offers the most appealing—“sensual,” the company calls them—bodylines and quietest ride. Showing off Buick’s luxury ou

      Buick Riviera Concept
Believe it or not, Buick-one of America's oldest car brands-actually sells more units in China than in the States. Of course, Buick also has a wider product line in China, with everything from a rebadged Suzuki Reno hatchback to a minivan. To show its love for its loyal Asian buyers, Buick decided not only to have its Chinese studio design this new concept, but also to debut the car in Shanghai. The Riviera concept revives a name that hasn't been seen since the last generation car died in 1999, and it's a very important nameplate for Buick. When the original Riv' was unveiled in 1963, it blew the world away with its elegant, timeless design. It is still looked at as one of GM's best designs of all time, and the car was even on our "25 Most Beautiful Cars" list in September of 2006. This new design is meant to bring some excitement back to the Buick brand, not just in China, but around the world - the Riviera demonstrates a new design language that will be used on all future models.

General Motors’ Branding Fiasco Part Five - Buick, Fading Fast
Buick was the special child in the GM family: the beautiful and temperamental second-oldest daughter that somehow always got the most attention from Daddy. Sure, oldest daughter Caddy got to wear the family jewels and formal gowns, but Buick was lavished with style. Whether it was Harley Earl or Bill Mitchell, GM’s top stylists always blessed Buick with their best efforts. For decades, Buick was maintained in the style to which she had become accustomed, and remained America’s fashion-conscious upscale buyers’ wheels of choice. And then, not.Scotsman David Dunbar Buick founded his eponymous automobile company in 1903. The following year, the inventor of the overhead valve engine sold the struggling concern to James Whiting, an ambitious wagon builder. Whiting turned to William Durant to help jump start Buick. With an excellent product to sell (the Model C), Durant’s energy, affability and marketing genius ensured Buick’s ascension to profit and glory. In an interview with Car and Driver, Troy Clarke, president of GM's North American efforts, confirmed that Buick would be getting another model by the end of the decade. The forth vehicle to join the Buick stable will be rear-wheel drive and take cues from the Velite concept that debuted at the 2004 New York Auto Show.Whether or not such a vehicle will be a convertible or a large sedan remains to be seen, but it will share the Zeta platform underpinning the upcoming Pontiac G8 and Chevrolet Camaro. The Velite name may not carry over.In the same article, Clarke espoused Pontiac's goal of being a performance-oriented brand, while at the same time suggesting that all of Pontiac's products will not sport RWD. Clarke confirmed that a redesign of the FWD Vibe is in the works, and may be released as early as this year.

Buick to revive Skylark nameplate in China
The Skylark had its days in the 80's and 90's. The impression that remained of the Skylark was certainly not positive. However, GM did not market the Skylark outside of the US. So the nameplate will be revived in China for the successor of their Excelle compact sedan, based on the Daewoo Lacetti. The Skylark will sit on GM's new Delta II platform, which will underpin the next Cobalt, G6 and Saturn Astra. The Skylark will be engineered and built in GM's Chinese facilities and it may be one of the first vehicles from GM China destined for the US. While we have little or no idea on how it will shape up, we can predict that it will be widely received in the US. The Park Avenue, based on the Holden WM Statesman, had a distinct interior designed in China and we still hear pleads from GM enthusiasts to bring it over to the US. While GM already had three compact cars in the pipeline, it wouldn't hurt for a fourth one. But the real question is: Are Americans ready for a compact Buick? We'l

Now that GM is officially Number Two, many Monday morning quarterbacks are popping up to "help" the general right the ship. Count Alex Taylor III, Fortune's senior writer, among them. In an interesting article, Taylor outlines reasons why GM should cut loose the anchors of Buick, Pontiac, HUMMER, GMC and Saab in order to move forward and prosper. Reckoning that GM is too bloated with brands and capacity that were fine 50 years ago, Fortune says it's time to move on.[Source: Autoblog via Fortune]Where GM has 7 brands, new Number One, Toyota, has just three. Toyota, Lexus and Scion seem to be good enough to cover most buyers' needs, argues Taylor. But GM maintains that cutting brands would be cutting buyers since there are too many loyalists in the fold. The argument is that people want choice and more brands allows more specific targeting of the audience. But Fortune argues that the cost of that level of specification is too high. Buick Enclave comes to market with $1000 rebate
At first we thought it had to be a mistake. General Motors is already paying customers to take the 2008 Buick Enclave off their hands? It's not even on dealer lots yet, but Automotive News reports Buick is offering $1,000 "Conquest Bonus Cash" and 4.9% financing available on the $32k+ CUV.[Source: Autoblog via Automotive News]Continued- ArticleThough the "Conquest Cash" is intended to draw non-GM-driving customers away from the competition, no matter the name, rebates on brand new vehicles are obvious admissions of overpricing that only enforce car shoppers' addiction to cash-back offers. If the Enclave performs as well and is as reliable as it is gorgeous, it shouldn't need any incentives. On the other hand, a drop-dead body and cash back could be irresistable to all but the most diehard import buyer.http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/16/buick-enclave-comes-to-market-bearing-1-000-rebate/

New York: 2008 Buick LaCrosse CXS
Today was the legitimate end to the embargo on information about Buick's new 2008 LaCrosse. The LaCrosse has received a new nose inspired by the well received Velite convertible concept from the 2004 New York Auto Show. Along with the grille, the hood and fascia are all new, as well, though one can hardly see the difference to those components at first glance. The interior remains largely the same in design, though more items have been made standard like XM satellite radio, a telescoping steering wheel, redundant controls on the steering wheel and dual-zone climate control. The base CX even gets a leather-wrapped steering wheel and driver information center. [Source: Autoblog]Continued- Article, more hi-res images, official press releaseThe LaCrosse powerplant lineup remains the same, with the base CX and midrange CXL making do with the old 3.8L V6 producing 200 horsepower. The more expensive CXS also keeps the nice 3.6L VVT V6 producing 240 horsepower. Oh, and then there's that LaCr

New York: 2008 Buick LaCrosse Super
Yes, yes, this is the only LaCrosse we enthusiasts care about, otherwise there wouldn't be much cause to mention this car's name in daily conversation. Buick has revived the "Super" moniker after a fifty-year absence on the 2008 LaCrosse (and Lucerne, which we'll get to next) to demarcate its most premium and powerful models. As such, the LaCrosse gets a major power boost from the addition of GM's 5.3L small-block V8 that produces 300 horsepower and 323 ft-lbs. of torque. As we'll tell you a little later, that's more power than the Lucerne Super's Northstar V8 can manage, making the LaCrosse Super somewhat of an entry-level luxury rocket with a 0 to 60 time of just 5.7 seconds.[Source: Autoblog]Continued- Article, hi-res image gallery, official press releaseWe also get portholes on the LaCrosse Super, which is a given at this point – four on each flank signifying the eight cylinders pumping on the other side of the sheetmetal. New York: 2008 Buick Lucerne Super
It's interesting to us that the "Super" version of the new 2008 Lucerne features an upgraded version of the CXS model's 4.6L Northstar V8 producing 292 horsepower (compared to 275 hp in the CXS), when the smaller and presumably less expensive LaCrosse Super gets the honkin' 5.3L small-block V8 producing 300 horsepower. Why the discrepency? Regardless, the 2008 Lucerne Super features revised front and rear fascias with the most jarring change being the addition of a chrome grille that comes to a point pretty far down the Lucerne's face. It looks like a beak to us, which takes away from the Lucerne's otherwise classy styling. The Super model gets integrated dual exhausts out back, new rocker panels, portholes (w00t!), and new exclusive aluminum wheels. Other than that, the Super model is a gussied up CXS with a few more ponies.[Source: Autoblog]Continued- Hi-res image gallery, official press releasePRESS RELEASE:BUICK RETURNS 'SUPER' NAME TO DESIGNATE PREMIUM MODELS Exclusive Buic

A Large Car From Buick: The Buick Lucerne CXS
They say that once you own a Buick, you will love it and would not change brands for a lifetime. That is mainly because of the kind of comfort that this car gives to the owners. In the past, the brand employed rear wheel drive on their cars, but in the advent of cars, that [...]

GM to Stop Production of Buick Rainier
General Motors Corp. is discontinuing production of the Buick Rainier, which is made only at the Moraine Assembly. The Rainier, a mid-sized SUV, represents about 2.5 percent of daily production at the plant, with about 20 coming off the production line each day, said Tom Wickham, GM spokesman.Wickham said GM expects increased production of other vehicles to offset the loss at Moraine. He said the decision about which models will see increased production hasn't been made, but will be set after dealer orders come in this spring. He would not speculate about how it would impact employment levels.Wickham said employees and dealers are being notified about the decision. GM has about 3,000 workers at its Moraine plant on West Stroop Road. The GM Moraine Assembly Plant also makes the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Saab 9-7x and the Isuzu Ascender.[Source: YAHOO!]

Buick dealers reject a RWD vehicle
Buick dealers were reportedly shown a long-wheelbase, rear-wheel drive Holden Statesman that will be sold in China next year and asked if they would like a version to sell in the U.S. market. Surprisingly, at least to us, they turned down Rick Wagoner's offer of a rear-wheel drive Buick, citing concerns that such a vehicle would cannibalize sales of the front-wheel drive Lucerne. Both vehicles are about the same size and each would be available with a V6 and V8 engine. Perhaps we're just so starved for some more rear-wheel drive romping that we balk at the idea of any brand turning down a rwd product when offered. Sure, we can see the other side of the coin. The Lucerne did sell just short of 100,000 units last year, which isn't shabby. While that number could go down were the Statesman introduced here badged as a Buick, we would guess the combined sales of two large sedans targeting different types of buyers would easily eclipse six figures. The Ricker agrees with us, and thus he i

      Buick Enclave Review [Take Two]
Engineers will tell you, “Quick, cheap, good: pick any two.” For its first whack at a three-row crossover, GM opted for quick and cheap, and gave us the Buick Rendezvous. Admittedly, the model sold in decent volume-- but not because it was quick or good. For 2008, we have Take Two. The Buick Enclave’s styling has already generated far more buzz than the Rendezvous elicited during its entire six-year run. But does the rest of the vehicle measure up to the sensuous sheetmetal?

Czech it Out: 1965 Buick LeSabre 400
Pop quiz, hot shot: What's longer than a Ford Excursion, older than the Beatles' Revolver, blacker than midnight, totally devoid of seatbelts and soon heading to the Czech Republic? The pictures don't lie: a 1965 Buick LeSabre 400. Yes, the lure of a small finder's fee and my irrational obsession for anything with four wheels has once again seen me purchase a hunk of Detroit iron for a mysterious man somewhere north of Prague. Who am I to resist?

American Axle Strike Hits Buick Lacrosse and Chevy Impala
The obvious question: who cares? Aside from no one in the first instance and fleet buyers in the second, these two models aren't exactly what you'd call hot sellers. OK, that's a bit harsh (Mikey). But seriously, the fact that the spreading slowdown caused by the eight-week old United Auto Workers' (UAW) strike at American Axle hasn't got GM execs in a lather (including their laid back, globe-hopping CEO) is either a condemnation of the affected products' appeal or management acumen, or both. Anyway, Automotive News [sub]  says the growing shortage of axles in North America "forced General Motors to eliminate a shift today at its auto assembly plant in Oshawa, Ontario. GM also said it slowed production of four-speed transmissions in Ypsilanti Township, M

      Buick and the Detroit Zombies
There’s an often-repeated statistic: U.S. Buick dealers sell just four cars per dealer per month. It’s true, but c’mon; that was last year’s totals. In March, Buick sales slipped to three cars per dealer. Thanks to TTAC’s Frank Williams, I’ve had a chance to examine the exact dealer and sales stats for the Beyond Precision people. Having deconstructed the data, I can declare that this seemingly absurd three cars a month number, while strictly true, isn’t the whole story. The “whole story” is much worse.

New Buick and Hummer Models Re-Think Small
AutoWeek reports GM's downsizing models to meet the new federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regs. Buick is thinking of a Corolla-sized "Buick luxury car" to be based on China's Buick Excelle. The baby Buick would be built somewhere in North America on the rear wheel-drive Alpha platform currently under design in Germany. Given Buick's past history with badgineered small cars (Apollo, Skylark, Skyhawk) and the Beyond Precision people's current three cars per month dealer average, this one is doomed. Doomed I tell you. Doomed. A more interesting prospect: an "economy" Hummer smaller than the H3 called the... wait for it... H4. Since the H3 is already built on the smallest truck GMNA offers (Colorado/Canyon), upon what platform will Hummer (or its
