Some are suggesting that Ireland's rejection shows that the European people are against the Lisbon treaty and therefore the treaty should be dropped. Then again, you may decide to answer more 'diplomatically', and name the other thing that Brussels is world famous for: chocolate! The image of the chocolate-obsessed Belgian also springs quickly to mind when thinking of Brussels - and with over 2,000 chocolate shops and factories around the country (many in Brussels itself), it is perhaps a stereotype that the Belgians would not only accept, but be very proud of too!And yet, there is something rather strange about this relatio

It has varied charm, combining, with graceful transitions, the perfect loveliness of its old market place with wide boulevards and stately roads radiating to the four corners of the land. London to Brussels via the Chunnel
Well, I've done it. I just booked a one-way ticket in early February from London to Brussels. It will take 6 1/2 hours to get to Amsterdam (my final destination) from start to finish and it isn't cheap ($350 one way), but so what? My brother and his wife will be leaving from Heathrow at the same time, taking the plane to Schiphol Airport. I am willing to bet that they'll only beat me to the hotel near The Dam by an hour or so, and that I'll arrive feeling less ruffled and having seen more interesting stuff along the way.Has anyone taken the Euro Star underneath the English Channel? I adore my brown liquid gold. Recently while shopping at Costco, I stumbled across the House of Brussels Gourmet Drinking Chocolate - Extra Dark (71%). I figured I would give it a whirl and let me tell you, it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. Seriously. It isn’t even a wimpy powder mix. It is little pebbles of chocolate that you melt in a pan with milk. Personally I like to add a little bit of sugar and vanilla and then top it with some real whip cream. Pure heaven. You must try it. I hope they have it in your local area, otherwise I will feel sorry for you. I even stocked up on an extra tin so I can enjoy it throughout the entire winter season. Talk about dedication.

Turks Set Cars Alight in Brussels
Tonight (Wednesday evening) heavy rioting erupted in Turkish quarters of Brussels, the capital of Belgium. Buses and trams were attacked. Several cars were torched and shops destroyed. Police forces were unable to restore law and order in the boroughs of Sint-Joost-ten-Node and Schaarbeek where since last Sunday the animosity among Turks is running high. Turkish flags are omnipresent. In some streets the Turkish crescent and star adorns almost every house. The Turks’ anger was provoked by rising tension with Kurds along the Iraqi-Turkish border and by the debate in the American Congress about the Turkish genocide of the Armenians in 1915. On Sunday night Turkish youths in Sint-Joost destroyed the pub of Peter Petrossian, an ethnic Armenian who had to flee for his life. Apparently, some Turks think that by attacking the Armenians in Brussels they can convince the world that the Turks never committed a genocide of the Armenians. More...

Not only is the Turkish community planning to put upwards of 10,000 people on the streets, but so is the local Kurdish community. Both of these planned demonstrations have been banned by the police, but in the light of the rioting here over the last week, I wouldn’t put much confidence in the manifestation not going ahead. If you decide to loose your luggage, and your end destination is Brussels, you’d better hope your flight is handled by a company called “FlightCare” and not by “AviaPartner” !! The JPEG of this photo (1) wasn’t too bad, but it was a little clipped on both ends of the histogram and it seemed over saturated too.  The RAW conversion (2) had a better dynamic range and the colors weren’t as overbearing.  The color still didn’t thrill me, so I went black & white (3) with th

      Garlic Sauteed Brussels Sprouts
I have a confession to make.I love brussels sprouts.Really.I love them roasted, fried, sauteed. I am the only one in the house that will even eat them. Well, not really. My husband will eat them if I make them. But he doesn't like them. My favorite way to prepare them are to saute them in garlic butter.Simple and easy. Tonight I actually got two of the three to eat them.I shredded them and added crumbled turkey bacon. And miraculously the three year old and the 16 month old gobbled them up.The 9 year old wouldn't fall for it.Maybe next time.Garlic Sauteed Brussels Sprouts2 cups Brussels sprouts1 1/2 tablespoons butter1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil3 cloves garlic, smashedsalt and pepper Melt butter and olive oil in a medium skillet (over medium-high heat) until butter is foamy.Reduce heat to medium, add smashed garlic and cook until lightly browned.Remove garlic and discard.Add sprouts , cover, and cook, stirring occasionally on medium-low heat 10-15 minutes or until tender when pierced with a

Nuit Blanche (White Night) in Brussels
This is the only video taken last weekend on our Brussels trip. I was standing in the middle of the Grote Markt in Brussels. The woman was on a platform illuminated by intense white lights. The building I pan to is the Brussels City Hall and as you can see it is illuminated by blue lights. Saturday, September 30th was Nuit Blanche or White Night in Brussels. There were many cultural events around the city that night.I just love this music. It is Arabic obviously and she has a beautiful voice. If anyone reading this blog knows Arabic and knows what she is singing about please leave a comment and enlighten us all.

The weather forecast called for rain and clouds most of the weekend, but we only had a light drizzle late on Sunday. We started our trip by taking a tram to Amsterdam's Centraal Station. There we retrieved our tickets and boarded our train bound for Brussels. Well, yep--you guessed it, after arriving in Roosendaal and just before disembarking we were told the connecting train to Brussels would not be leaving for another hour---and without any explanation. That was my first experience on the Neth
