Not so long ago at Catamaran the subject of brownie points came up. Cindy, 2 Paul’s and I decided to devise a game for couples where we have the chance to earn brownie points. We all agreed this is wayyyyy more effective than a job jar.The way we set ours up is… each person writes out fun things they would like such as massage, dinner cooked, a walk on the beach, ½ h of me time and so on. Chocolate Cake + Caramel + Peanuts = YumLast week, I spent some time poking around in an antique shop. I found several things, and I was able to use two of my favorite purchases this week —the fluted tin and the antique whisk. Both are beautiful and still work well. For the tin, I sprayed it, sprinkled it with flour, and lined it with parchment paper. The cake slid out easily.CaramelThis week,

Back home from a weekend 'getaway' at the cabin and back to work! When it comes to cookies it seems you can hardly go wrong. Thick or thin, crisp or cake like, chocolate, pumpkin, sugar cookie, molasses or peanut butter; additions of chocolate chips, nuts, peanut butter, candy, coconut, fruit... you can do almost anything with and to cookies and they are still good! I had another picture of this dessert but half the frame was filled with Andrew's mouth about to chomp down on the slice of pie and he wouldn't let me use it.But it would have been appropriate because the photo really conveyed the intense longing this pie seemed to create around the table when I served it up.Not that it's really surprising--with brownies, pies, cream cheese and chocolate would you

From Twenty Four Hours a Day, July 26: "When we come to the end of our lives on earth, we will take no material thing with us... The only things that we may take are the things we have given away."Now, that's a sobering thought. Lately I've been hearing that message over and over, and it is quite eerie, to say the least. I guess it's important to remember this whenever I am tempted to buy some ne
I had been waiting for many months to actually bake these brownies. Almost since I got to eat what Lak had made for us. I got hold of two chocolate bars immediately, in hopes of baking these. But time just flew and these bars had only each other for company, in the cold compartments of the freezer. Well there was this tin of peaches, of course! Not being satisfied, she had to ruffle the devil, Lak

Lon's co-worker Marcos gave me his old bike when he bought a new one. This is a life-saver for me since I'm riding in the NYC Bike Tour this Sunday. If you haven't noticed, I often show my gratitude with food. These Mocha Cheesecake Brownie Bars are just layers of good stuff, brownie bottom, mocha cheesecake middle, and sour cream topping. Sweets for the sweet! Thanks Marcos! Some notes:1. The recipes calls for a metal pan. My 8x8 is a glass pan so you can adjust for this by lowering the temperature roughly 25 degrees F and it may have to bake a little longer. Watch it carefully.2. The hardest part about this recipe is removing it from the pan. I'm not sure if the metal pan would have made it easier but I doubt it. I would use a sharp knife to cut around the edges and to cut into bars, whil
Well I thought this to be a cake, but thinking again I decided its a brownie! Yea it wasn't so soft and fluffy, as you would expect a cake to be and it was so easy to make, that's the best part! I was inspired by this Chocolate Brownie and I was just too trilled not to try again. Normally when I get the urge for a cake, I either have to bake my own egg less Black Forest Cake or get from shop. Both sounds so alarming always. Though my Black forest cake comes out yummy, its a kind of work I avoid these days. The last time, Konda wanted a cake at home, I planned for the chocolate fudge the previous day and did the cake the next day! This worked out fine, still its not something I would want to do on a regular basis.Infact, since my oven gave way years back, I never attempted this area of cook
Low Carb, Soy Free, Grain Free, Dairy Free, Casein Free, Egg Free, Taste Free... KIDDING! These little brownie bites are so amazingly delicious, they are definitely NOT taste free! About a month ago, I was at a grocery store and starving (not a good combination) and I found these little bars called, "Pure Bars". On the wrapper they were listed as "raw" food. In other words, not cooked, pure, organic ingredients. I thought for sure the bar would be awful! But I was hungry and the package stated that it was free of gluten it was "chocolate brownie" flavor, so I thought I would try it for the ride home. How can you resist something that says "Like a Good Mood in a wrapper!" ;-) Oh. My. Word.It was amazing. It was so good! The bar was rich and super chocolately and didn't feel the least bit he

The holiday season is in its full swing, and believe it or not, as soon as I step out of my house, I am filled with the aroma of baking emanating from houses all around me!! All homes are adorned with twinkling christmas lights, and fabulous decorations in the front yards, with Santa, and his sledge of reindeers, giant snowman, lighted christmas trees, and sometimes even tiny replicas of Bethlehem, and as if that is not enough to remind me of the festival, my nose keeps tingling at the smells of spices, cookies, savoury treats and other holiday baking that is intoxicating, and in my case, highly addictive, as I'm tempted to turn on my oven!! Here are some semi-homemade brownies, with all the goodness of chocolate combined with creamcheese for that marbled effect. All that fudgy chocolate is so inviting, there's no way you can resist eating it!! And as it uses some ready-made items, it doesn't even take much time to dish out these lovely beauties!Ingredients1 packet of ready-made cho
…are early Christmas presents for the kids. A sweet couple from our church brought these new pets to our children last night. Sarah had been asking about them all day long:
“When are they coming? When will they be here? Why is it taking so long?!”
Well, last night, Cutie and Brownie finally arrived to join our family and spend their first night in their new home. Cutie is a huge Goldfish and Brownie is a brown Placo fish. The following is the story that Sarah wrote about them this morning:

Hi, I’m Cutie. Let me tell you about me. I have a new family now. And guess what! I’m a Goldfish! I look so pretty. I have a friend, named Brownie. Me and Brownie love to play. But we are different. I eat fish-food, and he eats stuff (that I don’t know what he eats). Do you love and like fish?
Wherever I go, he (Brownie) is with me. I like my new home. Yes I do. And my new dad said he might get a frog to put with me and B

Mix the brownies by hand until fully stirred. Carefully plop in the raspberries. Make sure they are not all in one blob. Gently fold the berries into the brownie mix. Spray your springform pan with oil and pour in your brownie mix. You are now going to bake your brownies. Follow the time and temperature on the box for a 9x9-inch square pan, but use a round pan. You will probably add 5 minutes to the baking time because, when you add the liqueur and t

This week I thought I'd spend the week finding some great sites for foodies. I think that "artist" is synonymous with "chef", they are one in the same. I can't remember ever meeting an artist who couldn't cook really well. I'm not sure if it is the other way around, although my cousin is probably the best cook I know and she is an amazing photoghrapher too boot. Anyway, I ran across this blog called Once Upon a Tart. The Brownie Babe is a monthly contest for the best brownie recipe and oh, my - oh, my! Take a look at this ooey, gooey, delightful piece of craftsmanship. I am a huge fan of the brownie so am wondering how one weasels one-self in to becoming a taste tester for this contest???Beyond the brownies though there are some really lovely recipes that seem easy and tasty. And the photos are so pretty. Groove on over and check out Once Upon a Tart I bet you find at least one recipe you can't resist trying!Cheers!
The elevators in the science building of my college are always packed, like the subway during rush hour. Once, the dean of science got on the same elevator as me, so I decided to make an impression.
Someone commented, as they always do, about how crowded the elevator was.
“Crowded elevators are good. We can study the effects of Brownian motion,” I joked.
The dean started giggling like a school girl until I reminded her we were at an institution of higher education.
So she recalibrated her response and started blushing instead.
Afraid of failure and completely unable to decide which brownie recipe I wanted- I made two batches! Both turned out great (funny how that works), so I am posting both recipes. You decide which brownie you are in the mood for or make both!

Are you one of those people (like me) who prefers the edge brownies to the soft ones from the center of the pan? If so Boing Boing found a brownie pan with nothing but edges:
The Baker’s Edge brownie pan is a labyrinthine trough running through a rectangular pan. The topology means that every brownie cut [...]

Joy, from Oh, Joy! just posted on her wedding favors, which were so personal and well done. They gave guests custom created gourmet brownies made by Mari's New York (her website will be launching soon) in flavors that paid homage to both her culture and that of her husband. One was in Thai Coffee, and the other in Korean Red Bean. The flavors were concocted specifically for the happy couple.Joy is a freelance graphic designer, so she wrapped white slide boxes with a print that she designed herself, and secured them with bands printed with notes to her guests. This is a great example of how you can take something ordinary (brownies) and make them really stand out in the eyes of your guests.
I have a friend (we'll call him Jose Turner) whom I suspect is a brownie/cupcake addict. Whenever I ask Jose about baking suggestions, he always responds with "bake brownies with pecans!" If one were to shake Jose upside down cookies would fall from his pockets instead of coins. I bet he hides brownies where a normal person would hide valuables. I searched high and low for a good recipe that would meet Jose's "needs" (addiction). That is why these eight cupcakes are dedicated (and will be given) to Jose. The recipe is from Tate's Bake Shop by Kathleen King.Brownie Cupcakes with Espresso Buttercream6 tablespoons of salted butter6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped1/2 cup packed brown sugar1/3 cup of sugar2 large eggs1 teaspoon of vanilla1/2 cup of flour1/4 cup of pecans, chopped*Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Yeah, it was an accident actually. It wasn't meant to be a brownie, just a simple chocolate cake but went deliciously wrong. I wasn't sorry. And michelin-man definitely wasn't sorry too. He was too happy being appointed the taste-tester for my little baking accidents. I feel so lucky to have ...
It’s the best dessert recipe book I’ve had in my book rack. Several recipes I’ve tried from this book are absolutely delicious.
