to some, the bronx is (still) burning
Strangely, a few days ago I was excited by the recent NYT article, Borough Gets Scant Notice for Hospitality. And then yesterday, I found If the Bronx Builds (and Updates) It, the Tourists Will Come which excited me even more though I must say I was surprised to read the harsh, insensitive thoughts of one commenter, who said:better idea not to waste one cent designing the bronx website. most of t

Bobby Abreu slugged a two-run homer and Alex Rodriguez added the 522nd of his career to move past Ted Williams and Willie McCovey into 15th place on baseball's all-time list. New York led 7-4 after four innings, fell behind 9-7 in the fifth, and scored four times in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good. LaTroy Hawkins picked up the win and Brian Bruney his first save. Julian Tavarez took the loss for Boston, which had its four-game winning streak snapped. Dustin Pedroia, J.D. Bronx Resident Skipped School to Become the First Fan to Enter Yankee Stadium
To be 'first' in most categories is a great honor, but to be the first fan to ever step through the gates of now legendary Yankee Stadium is something very special. So special that Malcolm Drummond -- who lived but a mere blocks away from Yankee Stadium when it opened in 1923 -- bailed on his school responsibilities that April 18; determined to be the very first stadium patron.Drummond's proximity to the Stadium was indeed an advantage, but it didn't hurt that he arrived at the corner of River Ave. and 161st Street hours before Yankee starter Bob Shawkey would throw his first pitch. Drummond's resourcefulness paid off handsomely. As the Bronx Home News detailed in the fifth paragraph of its April 18 evening edition, Drummond (whose complete address is printed) appears to be the first to hav

Joe Torre & The Bronx Zoo: Still A Candle Twisting Away in The Wind…
Not to go too deep back into revisionist history; let us hark back to what was said 2 weeks ago when the Yankees were on the verge of their season ending..."His job is on the line," the owner was quoted in Sunday's editions of The Record of New Jersey. "I think we're paying him a lot of money. He's the highest-paid manager in baseball, so I don't think we'd take him back if we don't win this series." -- the words of the "Boss", George Steinbrenner...Well, the Yankees won that Sunday, but got jettisoned out of the pennant chase the following Monday thanks to a loss to the Indians. And a few days later from Brian Cashman....Nearly everyone in New York wanted to know Tuesday whether owner George Steinbrenner will keep his longtime manager or let him go after 12 straight playoff appearances. No answers yet."Have some patience. Things take time. There will be a process and we'll work through that, and it will lead us where it leads us," general manager Brian Cashman said. "My speculati

More About That Team from the Bronx
IGN Sports' Dan Phillips has come up with a list of recommendations for the Yankees as they try to "right" the 94-win ship, with the premise that "The Yanks should wave goodbye to sentimentality." I can't argue with two of them, ("Let Joe Torre Walk" and "Sign A-Rod") but the other two represent the opposite of good advice:2) Let Jorge Posada WalkPosada is coming off the best season by an aging catcher in baseball history, which is precisely why the Yankees should let some other team get suckered into paying him the big bucks. Aging catchers inevitably break down into mere shells of their former selves, and what's worse, they do it suddenly and without warning. Do you really want to fork over a three-year, 45 million-dollar contract to Posada on the assumption that he'll defy one of the few universal truths in baseball and produce offensively well into his late thirties? Just ask Red Sox fans how that worked out with Jason Varitek. Just one year after signing their oft-injured star

How big real estate firms, often from abroad, are buying up apartment buildings in the Bronx
WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez has a piece today on how big real estate firms, often from abroad, are buying up apartment buildings in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. Fueled by the weak dollar, foreign firms are purchasing properties "this cheap stock of housing that’s far from luxurious." But at the current rents these buildings are barely profitable (if at all), so they still can't be considered bargains even for someone buying with euros or pounds. The deals only work for the investor when they can raise the rents.

Last night, the O's defeated the Yankees 4-0, thanks to a masterful performance by Erik Bedard and the power of Aubrey Huff. On an ungodly humid night where the vast majority of fans rooted for the Yankees, O's fans are delighted to have beaten the Bronx Bombers for the 4th time in five opportunities this season. The O's scored in the sixth inning as they teed off of Roger Clemens. Ramon Hernandez drove in a run to start the fun, and then Aubrey Huff (finally!) hit a three run homerun for the exclamation point on Wednesday night.Roger got denied his 350th win, and while he got by on location, grit and determination for the first five innings, he looked like a middle-aged man when it came to the sixth inning.Yet again, Roger was denied win number 350...Erik Bedard looked great at his struck out and had a two hitter going into the eighth inning until he was yanked.Tonight, it is Chien-Ming Wang versus Daniel Cabrera.Seeing games in Yankee Stadium since the mid-1990's (I spent a lot of

However, with Mikey's transference to greener pastures this week, I fear it might have the opposite effect. Instead, I give you the craziest Venezuelan this side of Huge Chavez: While we can't look forward to an AJ/Mikey rematch any longer (and frankly, that ALONE might have been cause to keep Barrett around), we can hope for yet another lecture on diversity and tolerance in America from their fearless leader. In the past, Ozzie has given us such pearls of wisdom as: "I've got two people here that drive me crazy. They are all over me, and I'm like 'Shut up, you drunk.' It's easy to make moves when you're drunk.” "If my kids were on the field, they were going to get their rear end kicked. What's Ozzie Jr. going to do? Eat somebody?" The Bucs are currently battling the Million-Dollar-A-Start Man in Yankee Stadium (and holding their own through 4) in the second game of the highly anticipated series with the Yanks. Longtime reader "Cecil from Cecil" gives us an in-person report from last night's Bucco extra inning loss against the Yankees:"My observations from a hot and sticky night in the South Bronx: 1. Low turnout from the Pittsburgh fans! I've never been to a Pittsburgh road game (Steelers, Pirates, Pens, or Pitt) where I've seen fewer Pittsburgh fans than at Yankee Stadium on Friday night. I saw a few Clemente jerseys, a Jason Kendall, and finally a Jason Bay as we boarded the subway after the game. Shockingly, very little Steeler gear. I was sure I'd see a Greg Lloyd jersey, but maybe those will be out in force later in the weekend. 2. I can't relate to people who take baseball as seriously as the Yankee fans do. King George Says Not All Is Rosy In The BronxNew York Yankees principal owner and managing partner, George Steinbrenner has spoken, and according to published reports, not all is well in Yankee Land. Steinbrenner, spoke with the Associated Press, in a report published on Friday and among other things said that general manager Brian Cashman was on a "Big hook." Steinbrenner said that Cashman wanted total authority, in team matters, that he currently has it, and the team's future is right now in his hands. Steinbrenner, also told the A.P. that manager Joe Torre is not in any short term danger, that the team is not looking to make a change at the field general level. Steinbrenner, speculated that current Yankee coach Don Mattingly would probably become a fine manager some day. When asked to comment on New York DH Jason Giambi's interview last week, when Giambi said MLB owed the fans an apology the Yankees owner did appear to be pleased. Steinbrenner said that Giambi "should have kept h

      Sketching at the Bronx Zoo
One thing I learned today is that I prefer to sketch things that don’t move! My friend Kay and I went to sketch at the Bronx Zoo. We brought just our sketchbooks, ink pens, and small pan sets of watercolors. It seemed that every single animal started moving as soon as the pen touched my paper. I thought one minute gestures in the figure drawing studio were fast, but suddenly those seemed like long poses compared with what we faced today! They were also farther away than the models—sometimes so far away that seeing them clearly was a challenge. Aha! Finally I got to sketch something close that didn’t move—the rhino statue in front of the Zoo Center! *grin* I could do more of these. Camels are a really hard to sketch and don’t stay still at all, and even the bison turned away from us as we started to draw. Next time, I think I’ll focus on the architecture. hehehe…. It was a beautiful day and we had a wonderful time enjoying the animals, the

Yea, so in case you haven't noticed Arod seems to have temporarily gotten back together with Yankees fans everywhere this April. George Steinbrenner Comes to the Aid of Victims of a Fire in the Bronx...
Spending a lot of time in New York City and being a baseball fan, we often know about the legend of George Steinbrenner and his sometime tenuous relationships with players, coaches and managers. As well, he is often criticized for the Yankees spending and perhaps playing a large role in the financial disparity of franchises in the game today. Well, I have seen George Steinbrenner show a lot of heart to players and with charity work, and yesterday he offered to help out nine victims of a horrific fire that engulfed a Bronx row house in the same vicinity where the Yankees play by paying for their funeral arrangements. Some of us may hate or like Mr. Steinbrenner for his massive ego and theatrics in the past, but he stepped to the plate for a family in a time of need, and you only have to respect what he’s done.
