“Brokeback Mountain”: From Film to - Opera?
Being the crybaby that I am, I absolutely loved “Brokeback Mountain” which is the film version of Annie Proulx’s novel. The film, as we all know, is directed by Ang Lee and starred Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger. The film was released in 2005 and grabbed 3 Oscars for best director, best [...] Related Entries: Shu Uemura Holiday: Grand Opera Collection  Grand Opera, an exc

      Brokeback Mountain: Christian Edition
Thanks to James Crossley for alerting us to this important blog, NT Wrong (a spoof of Bishop NT Wright). You will find a number of interesting things on there including this, Brokeback Mountain: Christian Edition. BTW, James Crossley is a scholar of Christian origins, whose book, Why Christianity Happened: A Sociohistorical Account of Christian Origins was one the IRD's Jim Berkeley (and other Presbyterian right wing nuts) wanted removed from the Presbyterian Publishing House. Wouldn't want them publishing scholarship, would we?The Presbyterian Right might approve of this film, though. “Because there’s only one man whom it’s ok for another man to love.”

Phil Jackson's "Brokeback Mountain" comments getting too much attention
In case you haven't heard, Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson is getting the hammer laid down on him (no pun intended) for his comments after Tuesday night's loss to San Antonio. During the postgame conference, Jackson said, "We call this a 'Brokeback Mountain' game, because there's so much penetration and kickouts". This, in a word, is hilarious. It's funny, it makes sense, and it is

To do a “Brokeback Mountain” on 377A: Understand the Homosexuals
Just as everyone is debating over the social, religious, moral aspects of the petition to repeal the 377A of the Penal Code and the hullabaloo created by the parliamentary speech made by NMP Thio Li-Ann, no matter which side you take, for or against the repeal, perhaps we should try to understand more about the lives of homosexuals. One good example to explain my point could be the triple Academy award-winning movie “Brokeback Mountain”. To quote Stephen Holden of the New York Times wrote a review on the official movie website: “So begins a sporadic and tormented affair in which the two meet once or twice a year for fishing trips on which no fish are caught. Jack urges that they forsake their marriages and set up a ranch together. But Ennis, haunted by a childhood memory of his father taking him to see the mutilated body of a rancher, tortured and beaten to death with a tire iron for living with another man, is immobilized by fear and shame. Both Mr Ledger and Mr Gyllenhaal ma

      "Brokeback Mountain" (2005)

      Brokeback Mountain (2005)
It’s been two years this the “Gay cowboys” movie came out in theatres, and the subject has been bread and butter of movie critics, stand-up comedians and late night TV show hosts. Brokeback Mountain and Cowboys
Well I was watching Brokeback Mountain and I have to admit the pairing of Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaall was great and definately made the file appear as there was real chemistry there.  They may both be straight but they played their parts very well.   In 1963,two young men hire on as ranch hands in the Wyoming mountains.During the long months of isolation,an unusual bond starts to develop between them, one which they are only vaguely aware of--until one night when it rises to the surface in a passionate encounter. When the season ends, they part ways, only to realize the true depth of their feelings. Thus begins a decades-long affair that the two of them desperately try to hide from those around them--one which will prove simultaneously beautiful and devastating As I was watching the film and its about cowboys, I thought I would have a hunt around and see if there is any other hot cowboys, because until the film I never really thought much of them.  Not that I have met

Chicago Board of Ed Sued for Teacher Allegedly Showing ‘Brokeback Mountain’ in Class
CHICAGO —  A girl and her grandparents have sued the Chicago Board of Education, alleging that a substitute teacher showed the R-rated film “Brokeback Mountain” in class. The lawsuit claims that Jessica Turner, 12, suffered psychological distress after viewing the movie in her 8th grade class at Ashburn Community Elementary School last year. The film, which won three Oscars, depicts two cowboys who conceal their homosexual affair. Turner and her grandparents, Kenneth and LaVerne Richardson, are seeking around $500,000 in damages. “It is very important to me that my children not be exposed to this,” said Kenneth Richardson, Turner’s guardian. “The teacher knew she was not supposed to do this.” According to the lawsuit filed Friday in Cook County Circuit Court, the video was shown without permission from the students’ parents and guardians. The lawsuit also names Ashburn Principal Jewel Diaz and a substitute teacher, referred to as &ldqu

      Brokeback Lawsuit Insanity
While I agree that the teacher and school in question here should have gotten parental approval before screening the movie version of Brokeback Mountain in an 8th grade classroom, I find the reaction of these grandparents to be totally absurd. Tell me if I'm wrong here, but I cannot imagine that a 12-year-old child would require psychological treatment after watching this particular over-praised and over-rewarded movie. I don't want to offend anyone by saying this but the movie reminds me of chick-lit without the chicks. The lawsuit claims that Jessica Turner, 12, suffered psychological distress after viewing the movie in her 8th grade class at Ashburn Community Elementary School last year. The film, which won three Oscars, depicts two cowboys who conceal their homosexual affair.Turner and her grandparents, Kenneth and LaVerne Richardson, are seeking around $500,000 in damages."It is very important to me that my children not be exposed to this," said Kenneth Richardson, Turner's gua

Brokeback Mountain (2005) - ickleReview (cinema)
Ang Lee film set in 1963 initially but spanning twenty years in the lives of two Wyoming shepherds who have a homosexual love for one another frustrated by their own fears of how society will react towards them.Heath Ledger plays the more reticent of the two men, Ennis Del Mar. He was brought up by his brother and sister and has had quite a hard life. Jake Gyllenhaal is the more forthright Jack Twist, who initiates the physical relationship between them. After their initial summer together spent up on Brokeback Mountain guarding thousands of sheep from the wolves (is there a metaphor there, I wonder?), they don't see each other for four years, by which time they are both married (to Dawson's buddy Michelle Williams and The Princess Diaries' Anne Hathaway - not, incidentally, Shakespeare's wife, who I believe died some time ago). They claim to be old fishing buddies and swanny off to the mountains two or three times a year for the next twenty years. Ennis doesn't have the courage t

      Brokeback, At Last
SPOILER ALERT, for those, like myself, who have held out beyond all decent timeframe.Okay, first the cynical, harsh criticism. From the start, there were several obstacles to my suspension of disbelief. First of all, first scene, we have two guys essentially ignoring each other. This, in my limited experience, is very unlikely to occur in any small town. People wave in passing cars, and they say howdy immediately, whether they like you or not.Second, neither of the actors was leathery looking enough. They would have been very tanned, over time. They also would have been wirey from years of physical labor. And known how to handle an axe. Two soft, pasty boys from Hollywood hardly cut it. Also they had lovely teeth, and all of them, and didn't chew. Unlikely.Third, I hate it that they weren't actually gay. Tenderness they pulled off, but there was nothing like sexual tension. Now Culkin pulled it off in "Party Monster", but then I think he's probably gay. He was a very convincing Alig.
