A wave of protest. That’s what British Airways (BA) provoked this week when it announced — with no warning — that starting November 6 it no longer will transport “unsuitable” items on its fleet of aircraft.
The list includes canoes, hang gliders, pole-vaulting poles, javelins (!) and, yes, surfboards.
Surfboards??? Dude, what is BA thinking?
While the global community of javelin throwers is tiny, surfers number in the thousands. And they are not happy.
A spokesperson for the British Surfing Association (BSA) said she was “extremely shocked” by the decision, especially as some boards weigh much less than many items that were not included in the ban. “We’d find it extremely hard to believe that the average short board would be more difficult to handle when compared to a double bass and a full bag of golf clubs.”
And there’s the rub. BA’s new policy applies

I'm currently tied up with some important work and won't be able to resume blogging fully until next week, but, here's an interesting story about a trio of princesses from Qatar who were ejected from a British Airways line after they refused to sit next to some male passengers. The other passengers seem quite pleased, and with good reason: all that hubbub held up the flight for almost three hours.
According to this MSNBC article, an Al Thani Sheik (the Al Thani family are the royal family in Qatar) held up a British Airways plane for several hours when he realised several female members of his family were seated next to men.When other business class passengers in the plane refused to change places, he stormed into the pilot's cabin to complain.Eventually, he, his family and his servants had to leave the plane. The Scotsman newspaper reports that in the one week since BA check-in and baggage handling has been outsourced that hardly any BA flights have departed from Edinburgh airport on time. It would appear that BA anticipated that many of their experienced staff would transfer to the new service provider Aviance. This doesn’t seem to have happened and the novice staff are being overwhelmed.

I assume BA have outsourced to save money but if it means that passengers get totally hacked off with the airline, it will be more detrimental than beneficial to the airline. BA seems to be becoming a world leader in shooting itself in the foot.
These further problems can only exacerbate existing delays, detracting for the pleasure of flying away for your Summer holiday.

London/Madrid, May 22 (DPA) British Airways will join forces with the US private equity firm Texas Pacific Group (TPG) in a bid for Spain’s leading airline Iberia, the carrier announced Tuesday in London.
Spanish reports said the bidding consortium would also include the Spanish funds Vista Capital, Inversiones Ibersuizas and Quercus Equity.
TPG had already announced a possible offer worth about 3.6 billion euros ($4.8 billion).
British Airways already holds a 10 percent stake in Iberia. Spanish investors were to control at least 51 percent of the formerly state-owned airline, which has traditionally been strong in Latin America.

The BA cabin crew strike due to start tomorrow Tuesday 30th January has been called off.  I think that this last minute decision will mean that it will be a bit chaotic for BA travellers tomorrrow.
