IT’S cheese on toast with extra cheese on top, but I rather like the high energy song and dance routines of Britannia High. What irritates me is that it treats its young audience as if they’re as stupid as the characters. It was obvious from the start that Danny (pretty boy Mitch Hewer) couldn’t read, but the storyline was so drawn-out as we laboured towards the surprise revelation.

Just last Friday I was walking under the library car park and out into Municipal Square when I overheard a couple chatting about the memorial. "Didn't that used to be in the shopping square," asked the bloke. "Not sure," replied his wife, "it looks as though it's been there a while." Couldn't help myself, so we had a brief natter about how Britannia came to move from Market Square, later installed on its new base in October 2006. It turns out they were from near Holmes Chapel and hadn't been to Crewe for a while. The photo, taken from the council offices balcony, came from Terry Beard's collection...
The Royal Yacht Britannia was the home of the Royal Family while being on the sea. It retired in December 1997 and now lays in the harbor of Edinburgh open for visitors. The entrance to the yacht is via a shopping centre next to it.

It doesn't seem like five minutes since the MAT (Memorial Action Team) campaign was in full flow and signatures were collected in an attempt to stop the Britannia War Memorial being moved from Market Square to Municipal Square. The campaign failed and, along with the extensive revamp of the formal square that sits in front of Municipal Buildings, the old statue was cleaned up and relocated in her new home. To be honest, I haven't heard a single moan since with most in agreement that the new-look square and memorial look superb. So today I noticed a snippet in The Times with interest. Police in Tallinn (the capital of Estonia, and a beautiful city, too) were forced to disperse around 1000 protesters who were demonstrating about plans to relocate a Second World War Red Army monument. The situation and circumstances are wholly different, but just imagine what it must be like when feelings run so high. Let's be thankful that never happened in Crewe!
