Manchester police and the Government have warned some of the world's most notoriously racist football fans – those of Zenit St Petersburg – not to bring their abuse of black players to Britain when their side face Glasgow Rangers in the Uefa Cup final at the City of Manchester stadium tonight. Uefa's chief spokesman, William Gaillard, also intervened as the prospect of racist clashes t

This book sheds light on one of the most curious episodes in early Victorian history when, around the time of the 1848 revolutions in Europe, a rapprochement almost developed between Britain and the papacy, and British politicians and writers referred to the new head of the Catholic Church, Pius IX, as 'the good pope'.

"Another testament that Filipinos are among the most talented people in the world is Madonna Decena. On the second episode of Britain’s Got Talent season 2 (England’s version of America’s Got Talent), the 33-year-old single mom blew the judges and the audience away with her rendition of the Whitney Houston classic “I Will Always Love You.”Trembling and a little unsure of herself, Madonna walked onto the stage and told everyone her reason for being there.Six months ago she flew out to Britain in the hope of creating a better life for herself and two young daughters. Agonisingly she had to leave her precious children behind with their grandparents in the Philippines, until she had raised enough money to send for them. Her rendition of I Will Always Love You brought a collective lump

Town planning in Britain has proceeded, in the phrase of Sir Patrick Abercrombie, from the particular to the general. During the nineteenth century, as the result of private enterprise, much pioneer work was done in estate and village planning. Well-known villages attached to factories, the co-partnership tenants' estates, and the great achievement of Hampstead Garden Suburb, all aimed at the reform of the domestic environment. The need to extend those principles to the town led to the first Town Planning Act of 1909. In its somewhat grudging treatment of old built-up areas this act showed a strong bias towards suburban if not estate planning, and in due course it was found inadequate. The next Act of 1919 led to the treatment of towns in their relationship to neighbouring towns and to the

Reports of the death of the 4×4 have been greatly exaggerated. Despite swingeing tax rises and an orchestrated campaign by the green lobby, the latest figures show that the vehicles once dubbed “planet killers” are more popular than ever.
The findings will come as a shock to the government and environmentalists who had hoped that a raft of new legislation would curb sales of large, fuel hungry 4×4s. Instead, car makers are reporting an extraordinary boom in 4×4 sales in both the new and used car market over the past year. The first three months of 2008 have seen a rise in sales, despite the credit crunch and a wave of belt-tightening in other sectors of the car market.

Cheryl Cole is one hot lady! Actually these recent snaps would suggest otherwise but we’ll pretend we didn’t notice. Despite her scarily skinny frame lesbians voting in an online poll have named the Girls Aloud beauty Britain’s top WAG! We guess if things don’t work out with Ashley it’s always nice to know Cheryl has other options.
Big time terrorism plots are always big news whereas more subtle and interesting trends are often recorded as footnotes. One such footnote occurred over Christmas 2007 in the British city of Birmingham. A 38-year-old man, Hassan Muhammed Sabri Al Tabbakh of Syrian origin was arrested by local police on terrorism charges. He is accused of stockpiling chemicals and information on how to construct a bomb. He appears to have acted alone and this continues to be a conspiracy of one. Further, details may...(read more)

Madonna Decena, a single mother to two kids, gave another honor to our country on her performance at Britain’s Got Talent 2008. A mother who made use of her God-given talent to earn a living for her and her kids sang her own version of “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston really stroked the hearts of the audience enough to give her a standing ovation. Britain’s first hydrogen fuel station will open tomorrow in the first stage of a technology revolution offering drivers the prospect of pollution-free motoring.
Another three hydrogen stations are planned for London and there will be at least twelve stations countrywide by 2010, paving the way for the commercial production of cars powered by fuel cells.
For more than a decade, the car industry has seen the fuel cell as the holy grail that will help to relieve it of its dependence on oil.
A fuel cell combines hydrogen from a tank with oxygen from the air to produce electricity, which powers an electric motor. The only byproduct is water and the whole process can be totally without carbon dioxide emissions.
Manufacturers have displayed dozens of fuel-cell concept cars but have been relucta

It's dodgy statistics time again, today courtesy of free paper Metro. In the midst of an feature about 'the state of the nation', based on a National Statisticians article on society, Metro makes the following claim:Percentage of UK population classified as white2007: 90%(England 65%)Um, given that England makes up about 50 million of the UK's 60 million-ish population, this just doesn't add up.If 90% of the UK's 60 million population is white, that's 54 million of them who are white and 6 million not. Even if every one of those non-white folk lives in England (which isn't the case), that still gives England a white population of 44 million, or just over 80%.So either the figure of 90% is wrong, or the figure of 65% is wrong. Or possibly both. When I spot something like this in a feature, i
