A few months ago I got a flood of emails. "We'll pay you! Just let us put a banner on your site!" or "Review this book! You know you want to!" and "Free stuff! No, really!"A few got sent to spam, most got ignored. One seemed promising, and you already read the interview with Susanne Dunlap (below). That was more fun than I'd expected, and her book was fantastic, so, well, what could it hurt? I scrolled down through my many emails and found one I'd kept to "think about" later. Educational products, free to me if I put up a review.I was ambivalent when it first came through my in-box. Free books, and I do homeschool. I do love books. Especially free ones. But I'm very picky. And I have LOTS of books. I choose books carefully. I have a "plan" for books. I like plans. What if their books didn't fit into my plan? But, riding the post-interview euphoria, I replied to the solicitation saying "Sure! I'll review some products!" And now I get to review them. How good for you and me and (ahe
Not too long ago, Maria from Brighter Minds Media sent me a package with a couple of products to review. The first item I pulled out of the box was a Care Bears Sing and Play: Follow-the-Lights Piano Songbook. Instantly my kids were in heaven!
My nearly six year old daughter has always been fascinated with pianos and musical instruments of any kind so this toy was a guaranteed hit from the get go. The nifty thing about this book is there are three modes on the piano which allows a child to either listen to the “player piano,” play by themselves while reading the notes in the book, or follow the notes that light up to learn a song. This particular keyboard has 14 different notes, 9 white keys and 5 working black keys. I normally don’t like “noisy” toys in our house, but the volume on this contraption is quite manageable. It also helps that there are (more…)
I’ve been meaning to mention something cool that happened to me recently - I was contacted by a company called Brighter Minds Media, and they asked me if they could send me some free educational products for me to review here on my blog. They asked for the ages of my kids, so they could send age-appropriate materials. You know my whole, “If it’s free, it’s for me!” philosophy, so I was completely tickled by this idea!
I got the stuff almost immediately, too. They sent two things - one was the DVD version of the game Nancy Drew - The Curse of Blackmoor Manor for Kayley, and the other was the book This Little Piggy for the little ones. Let me tell ya, Kayley was so stoked about getting something for her! It seems like she gets left out so often when we’re talking about getting stuff “for the kids” because we so often think of her as one of US, even though she’s still very much a little girl. So Kayley and I really enjoyed having some
I mentioned a couple weeks ago the good folks at Brighter Minds Media sent me some of their products to review and though I did have issues with the Marvel Superhero Fact Book I'm finally getting around to mentioning a couple things I did like.***Brain Quest DVD Game The boys pulled this out immediately, popped it into the DVD player and started answering the questions as they flashed onto the screen. By using the remote control to select answers it was like a kid-version of Trivial Pursuit on television. Very popular. However, the box describes the game as suitable for "Ages 8-10, Grades 3-5" and Spencer, my 4th grader, found the questions too easy. They were more on David's 2nd grade level--challenging enough for him to occasionally miss questions but to still have a fighting chance at answering 80% of them. Additionally, though the boys liked the interactive nature of the game I was less enthusiastic about something that had my boys sitting in front of the television--however
