The bridge is a part found on an acoustic guitar, the purpose of which is to act as a way of transferring the vibrations from the strings as they are plucked or strummed, to the soundboard itself. The soundboard then vibrates the air that is inside the hollow body of an acoustic guitar, and this [...]

Hey Guys. The new cool word on the training block is CORE. What is core? Your core is the bridge between your upper and lower body. Now we must bridge the gap between our training! Crunches lead to strong flexion st

A singer, tunesmith, and purveyor of what he dubbed "Southern music" — a brew of country, folk, rock, blues, gospel, and Celtic styles — Steve Young was a songwriter's songwriter, an acclaimed performer whose work found its greatest commercial success in the hands of other artists and earned him praise from the likes of Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt, and Lucinda Williams. Born in Georgia and raised throughout the South, by his teens Young was already playing guitar and writing his own songs. In the early '60s, he moved to New York City and became affiliated with the burgeoning Greenwich Village folk music scene. After a brief return to Alabama, where he'd spent time growing up, he settled in California in 1964.On the West Coast, Young found work as a postal carrier while striking u

I've hinted that work at Crewe’s historic Queens Park was about to kick into life and at last we can announce that a major engineering phase will start in early June and hopefully put the restoration project back on track. Eric Wright Civil Engineering has been appointed to progress the latest phase of the Heritage Lottery Funded restoration works package. This includes new bridges, lake edge works, improvements to the inlet and outlet mechanisms of the lake and water quality improvements. The park’s bridges and lake perimeter will cost around £1.7m to complete. Some additional minor works will also form part of the contract. The first visible task will be moving the clay arising from the burial of silt from the lake to support the retaining wall on the northern boundary of the park.
Desperate for cheap publicity for its flagging campaign for the London mayoral and Assembly elections, the British National Party is now planning some dangerous stunts. The BNP intends to hang banners over a series of bridges over London roads. The banners are likely to distract and enrage motorists, putting them and other road users at risk. The Metropolitan Police will normally arrest anyone attempting to do this and close roads until they can arrange for the banner’s removal. Police resources are already stretched. Such stupid stunts will just cost Londoners money and distract the police from dealing with other crimes. This is a strange way to act for a party that in its general election manifesto in 2005 said: “ We will ensure that the main priority of the police be returned t
The GNU/Linux command line and desktop are both sophisticated interfaces, but they are mostly separate realities. You can drag text into a virtual terminal from the desktop, or use Edit -> Copy to move text in either direction, but by default moving files and directories between them is impossible -- a problem that often requires extra switching between them if you frequently work in both. Dragbox is designed to solve this problem and connect the two interfaces -- at least if one of them is GNOME -- through what might be described as a combination multiple clipboard and simple file manager.

According to The Hollywood Reporter: Stanton will play the grandfather of Timberlake's character, a young man trying to reconcile with his father (Bridges) as he heads home to his ill mother's bedside. Lovett will play a Memphis bartender who lends a helpful ear to Timberlake. Writer-director Michael Meredith (Three Days of Rain) is shooting the project in Louisiana and other Southern locales. Be interested to know if anyone has information about future Network Rail bridge work. The Wistaston Road bridge has been in the headlines recently, effectively shutting down one side of Crewe to motor vehicles from January 2008. Other bridges have already been worked upon, such as Flag Lane and Merrill's bridge (both also on the Chester line). So where next? I'm not sure about the Mill Street bridge (pictured, as the only issue is height and width) but the Edleston Road bridge carries traffic and could be affected. I don't know, is that bridge already satisfying EU weight criteria? Both Eggy Road and Mill Street already carry substantial volumes of traffic. Closure of either (however brief) would put considerable strain on the town. As for the snap, I've always wondered if any visitor has taken the Lyceum sign literally and turned in the pumping station to the right of the photo!

The first part of this story may be found at: http://sharpiron.wordpress.com/2007/09/20/the-old-mans-yard/
Things had been going very well in the old man’s yard. There were plenty of fruits and vegetables, a large grassy lawn for games and big shade trees for when the sun got too hot. The Old Man’s house still sat high up on the hill and every once in a while someone said that they caught a glimpse of him.
The kids got along nicely. Some of them became team captains and they worked hard at coming up with rules for the games and making sure that everyone followed them. This was important because many kids wanted to play (although a quite a few of them just sat and watched).
There were lots of things to do besides playing games. The fence always needed mending. The sound of the traffic on the busy street was noisy and distracting and and there were some kids who still had bad memories. So they decided to plug up all the holes that let in the noise. They made mud out of the dirt

PopCap Games, kings of the casual games web-space and maker’s of the puzzle game hit Bejeweled, conducted a study of some 7,500 adults who play casual games, such as the ones they offer on their web-site, games like the aforementioned Bejeweled, Bookworm Adventures, Chuzzle, Feeding Frenzy 2, Zuma, Mystery P.I. and many others.
In stark contrast to politicians decrying how violent video games warp the minds of children, the results found that 70 percent believed that the games had some educational value, 68 percent believed they helped improve hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity, and 48 percent found positive benefits with cognitive exercise aspects of the games.
Almost a third of the respondents had children or grandchildren who played games in their home, and 80 percent of casually gaming adults with children or grandchildren say that they play with them! And a remarkable 92 percent of those thought that playing casual games together helped them bridge the generation ga
30 August 2007 (The World Bank) - This story draws attention on an ancient highway between Siem Reap and a neighbouring province, and steps taken to preserve the ancient laterite bridges. Not that the bridges have been deteriorating - which should say something about the quality of the structures, but bypass routes and bridges should ensure that they will last for even longer.

Recent rehabilitation activities drew special attention to the need for Cambodia to protect these unique cultural assets from increasing vehicle and heavy traffic.
With a view to preserve the authenticity and historical value of the ancient bridges, the APSARA Authority for the Protection ad Management of Angkor and the Region of Siem Reap permitted the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to buil
It’s been five years now that I have traveled the world in search of the secret voice of bridges. Every rumbling truck and gust of wind generates a vibration in the cables, and these sounds create a unique music, which is always present yet only heard once amplified through contact microphones.
The idea originally came while studying sculpture at art school in Sydney in the mid-1990s. One of the lecturers for a course in public art had given us the exercise to come up with an idea for an artwork in public space which had absolutely no constraints, wasn’t limited by feasibility, practicality or any other real-world concern.

VDOT TO RE-INSPECT BRIDGES STARTING THIS WEEK11 Structures Similar to Minnesota Bridge Will Receive Independent Review RICHMOND—As an additional measure to ensure the safety of Virginia ’s bridges in light of the bridge collapse in Minnesota earlier this month, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin re-inspecting 11 deck-truss structures in Virginia beginning Aug. 15 to ensure that there are no safety issues. VDOT is also launching a new Web site today to provide citizens with the latest information about VDOT’s bridges. The new site, www.VirginiaDOT.org/bridges will provide a clearinghouse for citizens to gather information about Virginia ’s ongoing efforts to ensure bridge safety. Engineers determined that 12 of the commonwealth’s 20,000
Stephen Wolfram, the creator of Mathematica and king-hell booster for cellular automata as a way of solving problems (and even creating space-time), has posted a fascinating rumination on what a bridge might look like if it were designed through evolutionary computing.
It was a terrible thing with bridge that broke this week. I suppose the politicians who did not let the bridge be repaired have bad days now and feel real, real ugly.
Even worse is that this probably will happen again.
Guardian today:
About 77,000 bridges across the US share the same "structurally deficient" rating as the one that collapsed over the Mississippi in Minnesota, it emerged yesterday.
Transport specialists said billions of dollars would be needed to replace the bridges, many of which were built 40 to 50 years ago and were coming to the end of their life.
Also a Swedish newspaper has reported about that this bride just is(/was one of many.
And there are Swedish bridges with this construction too.
If there is one thing you can always count on, it is that the politicians will show up whenever there is a national tragedy. And thus it is with the Bridge Collapse in Minnesota.Though, apparently , it will take at least a year to discover the actual cause, Harry Reid, and every other Democrat, wasted no time in blaming Bush. This type of thing has reached epidemic proportions. Today my daughter blamed the president for her messy room. And though the guy is a total dolt in most respects, the problem on the bridges and highways belongs to each and every one of our fine elected officials. If there is one legitimate function of the federal government, it is seeing that our roads, highways, and the other conduits of interstate commerce are up to snuff.Of course, since the I-35 bridge collapse is the topic for the next half hour, there will be much talk about repairing our rotting infrastructure. But nothing will be done. It's just a lot more fun to spend money on pork, earmarks, and Bridg

ARTIST OF THE DAY BRIDGES And POWERLINESA New York band brought together for their collective "love of the 3 minute pop song..."The songs here are best categorized as power pop with underlying eccentric (indie!) music stylings. Andrew Woods' vocals are punctuated by strong performances by Keith Sigel (bass), Pete Mucek (drums) and Jon Crockett (guitar). The result seems to be a single vision - a classic likable pop sound with somewhat independent approach to each song's instrumentation. The band has released an EP and is finishing up their first full length album. When I was in the Scottish Highlands last week I realised the importance of bridges to this area. Ferries are affected by weather, breakdowns, restricted timetables and can be full in busy periods. A bridge offers a much simpler means of making a short crossing over a body of water.
A bridge was finally built from the mainland to the island of Skye in 1995. The tolls for the bridge were high, around £9 for a return trip, there was a lot of protest and civil disobedience until the tolls were finally abolished in 2004. The islanders compared the tolls they paid to the tolls over the much longer Forth and Tay road bridges which only charged 80p return.
I’d never seen the Kylesku Bridge before but I thought that it was very elegant and on reading up on my return I noticed that it has been called one of the most beautiful bridges in the world and won several awards after it opened in 1984. John Lennon -Walls and Bridges(1974)320kbpsWalls and Bridges was recorded during John Lennon's infamous "lost weekend," as he exiled himself in California during a separation from Yoko Ono. Lennon's personal life was scattered, so it isn't surprising that Walls and Bridges is a mess itself, containing equal amounts of brilliance and nonsense. Falling between the two extremes was the bouncy Elton John duet "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night," which was Lennon's first solo number one hit. Its bright, sunny surface was replicated throughout the record, particularly on middling rockers like "What You Got" but also on enjoyable pop songs like "Old Dirt Road." However, the best moments on Walls and Bridges come when Lennon is more open with his emotions, like on "Going Down on Love," "Steel and Glass," and the beautiful, soaring "#9 Dream." Even with such fine moments, the album is decidedly uneven, containing too much mediocre material like "Beef Jerky" and "Ya Ya," which are weighed dow
Three Bridges20cm x 30cm, coloured pencil on hot press papercopyright Katherine TyrrellThis image is of three bridges on the River Thames in the City of London. The subject is Southwark Bridge from underneath Cannon Street with Blackfriars Bridge in the background. The River Thames is a recurrent motif in Whistler's work. It's my first attempt at anything resembling Whistler's style in later years in terms of simpler more abstract shapes and an emphasis on colour and colour harmonies. It's both a development and a departure in my style insofar as I've usually only done parts of pictures like this in the past but rarely the whole image. What I like about it is that it allows me to work with more marks showing and with more emphasis on the colours and the colour mixing. I'm trying to get some luminescence into the light within the picture.I used Zest It on the paper to help get some of the depth of colour - which was a very interesting experience! The paper seems to hold the Z
Unless you come from rural areas you may not be aware of the one lane bridge sign that are very common on New Zealand roads.
Another recent accident between two tourist driving rental cars has once again highlighted the need for visitors to familiarise themselves with this type of traffic hazard.
New Zealand country roads and state highways cross many rivers that are often only bridged by a one lane roads. The announcement of the upcoming one lane bridge is by means of a sign indicating which side of the road has the right of way and which lane has to give way. The signs are as follows.
The first sign indicates the upcoming one lane bridge with the red arrow indicating that you are to give way to traffic approaching or on the bridge heading towards you. If the red arrow was on the other side point towards you, this would indicate that you have the right of way and that all on coming traffic must give way to you. The second sign show this and also indicates the two different formats o

According to reports, Yahoo! has blended its free email and Instant Messaging (IM) services, thus making it simpler for users to chat online from any computer connected to the Internet. The company said that starting yesterday and continuing over the coming months, Yahoo! will activate this feature for users of the new version of Yahoo! Mail, which is in beta phase but available to all users of the service. In a statement, John Kremer, Vice President, Yahoo! Mail, said that they are bringing the fun of instant messaging into the e-mail experience. It is about bringing to the masses choices on how they communicate. They are hopefully bridging the gap between email users and IM users, as there is still a chunk of Yahoo! Mail users who are not using IM.According to Yahoo!, the new feature alerts Yahoo! Mail beta users if their contacts are logged on to Yahoo! Messenger and gives them the option of starting a text chat session from within the mail interface.
