I had a discussion with Phil not so long ago about how to properly use the words lay and lie in conversation. I found Grammar Girl's explanation here, which really helps to bring it all back into confusing focus.She brings up a good point. Poor Eric Clapton would have been slapped on the face in English class for his song "Lay Down Sally," because the literal meaning of that title is that he wants someone to pick up Sally and then put her down. Same goes for Mr. Zimmerman, aka Bob Dylan. He wrote "Lay, Lady, Lay," which is a great song. However, the proper way to talk his woman into flopping onto his big, brass bed would be to ask her to lie, lady, lie on his large mattress. Interesting, no? “Brass Knuckles” is Nelly’s fifth studio album that is set to drop November 13, 2007. This time around Nelly is clicking up with Pimp C, Sean P, Chuck D, Snoop Dogg, Babyface, T.I., and possibly even Bruce Springsteen. He even wants to get Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson on a track with Janet rapping a 16 and Mariah singing on the hook. One of the complaints I hear about the military, and usually by those with no military experience, is that the soldier’s freedom of speech is restricted. Not surprisingly, those with the least real concern for the soldier, and whose real agenda is to criticize the military, usually level this charge. Being a soldier is not the same as being a dentist or insurance salesperson or a mechanic. When you take the oath to support and defend your country you give up some rights. This is made very clear to you ahead of time. When I took the oath, my eyes were wide open and I knew exactly what I was getting into. I told the man in the shop that I’m an artist and he immediately knocked 1/3 off the price, telling me that “artist” is a magic word. hehehe…This is its still life debut. I paired it up with some yellow carnations for contrast, the brass bird for color cohesion, and the baby’s breath to soften it all a bit. It was way fun to paint.

I have been throwing up for days, mulling over and over a plan that was made by a safety net of wonderful people who love and care for a friend who is in trouble. The plan went into place only recently, and the backlash is stinging every beat of my heart. This friend of mine is hurting, badly now. I can see her in my mind, sitting on an island, and inadvertently, we drove her there. We did not mean to, not by any means. I love her, care for her, and subsequently, care about her family by default. She can’t see me, or won’t. The island is so far away, so desolate, off in the dark dark distance. She sits alone, pieces of the puzzle all around her, and I’m sure she is trying to figure out what to do next. The pieces are heavy, weighted with lifelong decision. The little brass bird, which is one of my favorite still life objects, was the perfect complement for the pinks and violets. It picked up some of the reflected color and cast it into the shadows. This was painted with brushes and palette knives. There's a lot of texture in the thick paint that is hard to show in a digital image.
